The property is an experience in of itself, there are lots of little corners to explore and it blends naturally with Óbidos’ aesthetics. Location is ideal, very close to the castle walls but not in the middle of all the day-trip tourists.

The breakfast options felt fairly limited, there was a strange focus on providing a vast variety of cakes and sweet treats. Some better savoury options would be welcomed. Some of the restaurant staff were unwelcoming, giving short rude answers and slamming things on the table. When enquiring on a reservation, we overheard the chef loudly complain about having to cook past 9pm (kitchen closes at 10pm). There is a huge discrepancy and variation in the rooms at the property, which left some us feeling we had rooms which were better than others in the same group. Despite being on the same booking we were put on complete opposite sides of the property.

The breakfast was amazing, there's lots of lovely fruit, pastries and eggs cooked to order. The location of the hotel is excellent. The staff were really nice. The reception area, corridors and walls of the restaurant are lined with bookcases full of novels, a really nice touch.

There was nowhere to hang clothes, in fact no furniture to put anything on or in except the desk where the coffee machine is. So we had to put everything on the floor. There was nowhere to hang towels either. We ate in the restaurant, the setting and ambiance were lovely, but the food was disappointing. I had the belly pork which was flabby, no crispy skin, and the plate was filled with crinkle cut chips made from reconstituted potato.

I loved the large cavernous room, it was so unique and quiet. Sleeping in a room with ancient architectural curves instead of square rooms is very pleasing.

Their breakfasts are the BOMB! A beautiful and tasty spread every morning. Unfortunately I ate dinner at their restaurant my last night, as I wanted to give it a try based on the breakfasts. The food was mediocre—it tasted o.k. but the presentation wasn’t very thoughtful and I thought it was overpriced for what it was. Portion was on the small side. I had a much better meal the night before for far less money up the street.

This has all the potential of being a great stay. Staff were efficient on check in and helped carry our bags to our room, 7. Upon entering our room on I was greeted by the smell of sewerage and a stain on the bedspread. The room had a balcony with seating which was nice, a mini fridge and coffee maker. We ate dinner in the restaurant (Duck and tuna) which was tasty and beautifully presented. The breakfast was equally delicious with a wide variety of produce.

Very unique and cool hotel perfectly located in Obidos. We enjoyed the breakfast selection, especially the eggs made to order. The hotel room was spacious and comfortable, and they gave us an unexpected upgrade and surprise treats waiting in our room as we indicated it was our honeymoon. Pleasantly surprised that we were able to park right outside since it was a weekday not in busy season, but they were helpful in sending parking instructions nearby in advance. Very helpful staff and very welcoming.

The wall in the room had some paint flaking and needs to be touched up, but otherwise nothing really negative to say.

Every single thing was fantastic. We had a blast. The staff was incredibly kind, patient and considerate. I made a mistake with the date of my booking, and they found a way to honor it, with no complaints or irritation. I sent photos of the place to my friends and they said it's like someone built this hotel specifically for me. It was a dream. I was dizzy with adoration for all the books, the brunch breakfast with fresh juices, coffees, pastries and made to order items was fabulous and would've been $50-$75 in the states.

There was nothing I didn't like. I can't imagine something that would make it better. Well, the dinner restaurant is only rated three stars or 3 1/2 stars in the various places that I researched. I didn't try it, but it may be that a little more attention could go into Improving the restaurant. However, the atmosphere alone was likely worth it. A big fireplace and lovely tables grouped around, with more books and wine, etc..

What a fantastic hotel. So different from your usual hotel. I could have stayed so much longer here. Great just being able to have a drink or meal (or in your bedroom) and grab a book or two to read or flick through. It’s just superb. Staff were great and the evening food was excellent.

I find to difficult to give a point of improvement. Maybe make it a bit clearer how you can order some warm breakfast if needed. I had forgotten you had to “ring a bell”.

This place is a real gem. It's just outside the city walls, and the location is perfect. It's such a small central town that everything is in quick, easy walking distance. My room was huge, and a perfect mix of historic old building, and modern touches, features, and bathroom.

Some of the staff seemed a bit unfriendly, but I was there in the days leading up to the annual chocolate festival, so maybe there was some added stress on them.

The Literary Man in Obidos is a one-of-a-kind hotel just outside the wall of Obidos. We had initially planned to stay only one night but ended up booking a second! The staff was incredibly helpful and the hotel was remarkably quiet. The breakfast was one of the best we've had in our many years of travel with made-to-order eggs delivered to the table. We would happily return for a future visit!

Some rooms have more character than others.

Loved this property. Our room on the first floor was exceptionally roomy bedroom entry and sitting room with well appointed bathroom. Dining room is a delight with excellent food and wine. Staff are very attentive. Breakfast wonderful and will cook fresh to order. Free parking on the street was not a problem for us. Great location for strolling the medieval town.

There was nothing we did not like. Only our stay was not long enough.
