Excellent and friendly service from beginning to end. Room was very clean, the different baths were wonderful. It was the first time I’ve tried an onsen where I could stand up; it was 1.3m deep. There are private baths available too. Loved the welcome snack which was rice cookies using rice which the ryokan grows - I bought a bag home. The lack of hot water during winter didn’t bother me at all, in fact I prefer the warm water jug that was provided. The ryokan is near a bridge over the river for a good photo spot. It’s also near a restaurant with very good Akaushi beef. We had taken a bus to Kurokawa; the ryokan is fairly near the bus stop, though there is a long flight of steps down, which I managed to lug the luggage down. After check out, the staff offered to help with the luggage up the stairs to the bus stop.

Small point - the stairs from the bus stop to the ryokan, and also the stairs from the room to the onsen and dining area. Just have to take care going up and down.

Such a beautiful experience. The Ryokan dates back 400 years (obviously re-builds ect). But is still so authentic. So don't expect elevators ect, instead it's steep stairs, but the staff help with your bags. We had a triple room with a toilet and wash basin. Not all rooms have a toilet and none have a bath or shower. But the onsite onsens have beautiful showers so it's not an issue at all. We opted to have the breakfast and dinner. And what a treat, the food, presentation and service was incredible. The staff made up our futons while we were at dinner. The room was big and beautiful. It was the most expensive hotel of our trip but so worth it. An unforgettable experience. Thank you!

Nothing. It was a wonderful stay.

The place is wonderfully preserved and the staff is gentle and lovable, they are truly committed to enable their guests have a great time. What I liked: the hotel, location, staff, food.

It's difficult to find something I didn't like, but since the question arises I would say that the only thing that is a little challenging is understanding the chef's explanations about the food served. But again, I like it to be like this, I don't want to travel to places that have to acomodate to me, but to the contrary.

Staff service were all good and fast. The lady front counter host is very hospitable. Room is big and clean. And bedsheet is very clean and neat. I really appreciate that they send me to the bus stop in a car which is a great help. Breakfast is great and I can tell that they put it a lot of effort in every area. Location is not far from the bus stop.

Room can be very cold due to the style of the window and the tap water is ice cold although warm water is provided in a thermal jug.

Simply - and by far - the best place that we stayed at while visiting Japan. The staff is exceptionally friendly and welcoming. The Japanese style rooms are lovely and they have a great view. The food is delicious. The Kaiseki is nothing fancy, but it is all very well prepared and a great experience. There are various onsens, most of them we could enjoy almost by ourselves. Definitely recommend Okyakuya to anyone visiting Japan!

As authentic a Ryokan as they come; owner and staff were lovely, rooms were spacious and comfortable. Small little touches like hot water being brought to the room were nice. 7 onsens for 13 rooms - you do the math (it's almost always private) 😄 Food was fantastic too and lots of quality produce used in every dish

We stayed 2 nights (seems like we're the minority that does so) and the dinner on the 2nd night felt a little underwhelming. Menu was changed out to give us a variety but instead of beef, a chicken hotpot was the main. Would've been nice if we were given a say into what we'd like for the 2nd night. Didn't mar the whole experience though and I'd still thoroughly recommend staying here.

My husband and I absolutely loved our time here. We stayed for 2 nights and only wished we could stay longer. The room was so spacious and futons were surprisingly comfortable. We could also see the river from our room, and it was the Yunohikari festival so there were lanterns hung around the river. There were many onsen options too and our favourite was the outdoor one where u have to walk along the river to access. And can I say the food (!!!) and staff were amazing, each meal was well curated and delicious. I can’t wait to return one day!

We visited during late Feb so it was a little cold around the property (especially when going to the onsen, though after the onsen ur entire body feels so warm u won’t need a heater for a while). The sink in the room doesn’t have hot water though the staff provides a flask of hot water for use. These are still small issues to us and we still really loved our stay.

Breakfast and dinner that was provided was really good. Staff was really attentive and welcoming as well. They prepared decaf tea for us, even making sure that the meal was catered to what you asked for (no raw food, no beef etc). They helped us to parked the car, and even help to clean the exterior of our car! Room was great to experience local culture. Private onsen facilities was wonderful as well, just need to queue for it.

Nothing much to do past evening time. Tatami and pillow is not the most comfortable as compared to beds, but this is expected.

The staff was very attentive and took time to explain the ryokans layout as well as show us where everything is. The food was delicious and arranged beautifully. The portion size was just right. There are multiple baths which depending on the time switch between mens and womens baths. Soaking after a meal or right after waking up really heals your body and mind.

Can’t say enough positive things about this property. The entire staff was very friendly and helpful and treated the guests like royalty. The five Onsen within the property each had their own unique characteristics and were very enjoyable. The room was spotless and elegantly furnished. The location of the inn was very central and backs on to the river. Would love to return

None.
