Great vibe at this hostel. Everyone was friendly. There is a community feeling here. Shingo spent a lot of time answering my questions and advising me where to go in town. On second night there was a dinner at the hostel - everyone staying there was invited and many people came from the community. It was really nice to meet some of the local people and talk and enjoy food together. I’m a vegetarian and they made sure I had plenty to eat! The kids of Shingo and Machoka are there much of the time, so I felt like I was staying at a friend’s house!

First night the heat was turned off in the room. It was very cold. I woke up with a cold and cough : (

Cozy, homey place with a great location. Common area was spacious and promoted meeting other travelers and even the host's family! The host was very helpful in recommending places and accommodating early/late luggage holding.

During the winter, the bathroom facilities got very cold, even if you tried to keep a heater on. 6 person rooms have half the futons on the ground; a roommate kept jumping out of top bunk onto floor so people on the floor kept being woken up. The latter is dependent on your roommates so I don't deduct points for it

The host and his family were very friendly and always around if you needed help. Shower was easy to use and there were two toilets (not a big guest house so 2 toilets was enough), air conditioning worked well and the livingroom/common area was comfortable and allowed you to socialise with the other guests easy. Location wise, it was right in the centre of Takayama, and a one minute walk from the bus station!! I would recommend staying here for a few days: one day to see what Takayama has to offer, one day to visit Shirakawa-go and another day to hike a mountain at Kamikochi.

Owner spoke good English, was friendly and helpful. Restaurants were packed during our stay so he went the extra mile and helped us make a dinner reservation! We used the private room and had a young child with us and it was very spacious and comfortable, everything was clean. Surprisingly, sharing a shower wasn’t a terrible inconvenience.

I didn’t mind but as it’s a guesthouse you’re obviously sharing space, light sleepers may be affected by some light and noise from other guests

I stayed here for a night. The location is within walking distance of the train station. The staff is super nice and friendly, he introduced many great places for me to visit in Takayama. I actually hadn’t done much research on where I wanted to go, so this was helpful! The bed is comfortable, I slept really well. There are several toilets, but only one shower room, so there may be a queue. Luckily I didn’t have to wait for the shower. Overall I totally recommend this place, and I’m willing to stay here again next time I visit this lovely city!

Decent sized bunk dormitories, traditional wooden building which felt like a pleasure to walk around. In our room we had a table with a sofa and stools for relaxing and socialising. There was a kitchenette for use with some communal bits and bobs as well as a downstairs cafe that we could use in the evenings. Shower and toilet were clean. Right in the centre of town so we could get anywhere we wanted within not too long of a walk.

We had a little trouble finding it once we had arrived in Takayama. We made our own beds when we arrived and any movement on the top bunk was quite noisy.

Great hostel accommodation and value for money. Was in a great location for us and they kept telling us about things to do in the nearby area. They recommended a festival in a nearby town which we would never have known about otherwise! They also helped us with getting there etc.

Could do with more showers and toilets and maybe a freshen up. We had a private room and the lock could’ve been a little more substantial.

I highly recommend this place. Especially if you're using Takayama as a base to go other places, such as Shirakawago or Kamikochi. It is so close to the station I was able to drop off my luggage and catch the next bus elsewhere as soon as I arrived at the station. The owners also just thought of everything. They even have prepackaged sets to take to an onsen (elsewhere in town) if you wish to visit one.

Very close to the bus and train station which it is ideal if you go to Shirakawa go and Kanazawa later. The owner is a very gentle person. They lend you transparent umbrella if needed. It was the occasion to me for sleeping in the Japanese traditional way. Free towel provided. Very nice common area. They provide you with a town map and a map with recommended restaurants and places to eat.

Maybe that there is just 2 WC and one shower to share among all the guests. The rest was really nice.

The guesthouse place was beautiful upon arrival - really beautiful indoor communal space with free tea and many books and cosy places to sit, with a good social vibe over a mix of ages. The guesthouse owner is super friendly and has had years of experience in hosting travellers and travelling. The rooms were cute and cosy with good bedding and lighting. There is a well-equipped kitchen too. It is conveniently located near the train station and a short walk to the old city.
