I was a bit hesitant at first about staying in bunk accommodation but the bunks were really good, private and had lots of room. The shared amenities were also great, the kitchen and dining area was very spacious and the common area was really nice too! Awesome anime setup in the common room too :D The staff were also super friendly and helpful, they helped me pick out some places to go to while I was there!

Constructive feedback - There was only one small washing machine there, and whilst it was no problem while I was there in the off season it may be difficult to find a free time to wash clothes during busy periods. But this is purely speculation and having lots of washing machines isn't really expected so \_(O.O)_/

Guest House Ouka is about 11mins walk from Takayama station, the route was pretty straight forward - just a straight line! The Guest House itself is cosy and well decorated. On 1/F you will find the reception counter and a home-like common area, the kitchen is fully equipped with utensils, cookware and long dining tables, Shower rooms are just next to the kitchen. My single room was on the 2/F which was clean, warm and spacious!! (with comfy bed/ chair/ hair dryer/ mirror/ small laundry rack etc. and a warm welcome note :) Restroom/ washing machine (200yen)/ tumble dryer/ Laundry racks/ washbasins were just few steps away. Staffs were so friendly and helpful, luggage storage was also available before check in and after check out. I had a great time in Ouka and Takayama, will definitely come back next time (and stay for few more days!)

This was the best hostel I have stayed in. The little details you find in the hostel are amazing. Everything was so convenient. They have great wifi, a common area where you can chill and a cute coffee shop. They also provide free tea and coffee, towels and toiletries. The staff was very polite and helpful in planning my 2 days in takayama. They have a cute board with all of their suggestions which helped a lot. The dormitory room was very big

The only complaint I have is that the shower room is downstairs while the dormitory was on the first. It can be a bit inconvenient but I really really enjoyed my stay here.

* Comfortable Accommodation: Spacious, clean, and comfortable single room. * Charming Atmosphere: Big and beautifully decorated lounge area with Ghibli themes. * Excellent Service: Lovely and helpful staff with good English proficiency. * Local Guidance: Personalized map with recommended restaurants and a list of Takayama attractions. * Practical Amenities: Clothes drying area, elevator (despite only 3 floors), and a shoe dryer (a lifesaver in the Takayama rain!). * Convenient Options: On-site coffee and ramen for purchase. * Well-Equipped Shared Spaces: Clean, well-equipped, and big shared kitchen and dining area.

Showers available on ground floor only.

This is the best hostile experience you will have, if you have never stayed in a hostel, this is your chance. Comfortable, silent, and everything is brand new. You feel the smell of new stuff. The reception guy let me check in at 1:00 pm

The lights in the dormitory are turned on at 8:20 in the morning, by the hostel staff, and this is VERY rude. All guests have their own lamps, so turning the lights on means you want guests out! They could do the cleaning, or whatever, without bothering the guest that just want to remain in peace inside his capsule. This is the sole reason for not a 10 score. Another suggestion is not accepting kids. There were 2 Chinese families with very noisy childs, screaming and beating the feet on the ground, and the parents just allowed it. This bothers other guests that have chosen to travel on their own peace.

Guesthouse Ouka was a wonderful base for exploring the charm of Takayama. The rooms are clean, cozy, and well-maintained, so it’s a peaceful retreat after a day of sightseeing. The lobby has a warm, inviting atmosphere where you can relax. The staff are exceptionally kind and always eager to help. They truly made my stay memorable. Clean facilities and thoughtful touches made it feel like home away from home.

The only minor drawback is the location, as it’s about 800 meters from the train and bus station. While the walk isn’t difficult, it can feel a bit long, especially in snowy weather.

Staff was friendly, polite and professional, basic English was fine, and there was a dedicated speech-to-text translation machine when needed. Single room was clean and cosy, blanket was sooooooo nice and needed during winter nights. Slippers and shower towels were provided, many restaurants around and very close to Takayama station. I came to visit the original scenes from Hyouka and they had the full manga series!!!!! Pity I couldn't read Japanese T_T Also you get a coffee discount coupon when checking in, they have some mad coffees there ^w^

The only niche thing was showers are located on the first floor, nothing wrong with the shower itself but such design made it slightly inconvenient sometimes.

The guest house is nicely decorated on the first floor. They probably have most of the Totoro items available. The house also owns the adjacent coffee shop, and they brew a delicious coffee for a quite cheap price. The traditional Japanese room was what you would expect from it which was nice for the price of the room. The host also allowed us to check-in at 2pm instead of 3pm without a prior notice (we only asked to leave the luggage).

The sound isolation is pretty bad, but it was not an issue for us.

Clean and cozy. We chose a private room with private bathroom and tatami flooring. There’s a lovely fire place at the living hall which is perfect during the cold winter weather. We travelled during year end holiday period and eating at restaurant was a challenge as most places needed advance reservation. In the end, we bought the famous Hida beef from a store and cook using the amenities at the guest house.

The water pressure at the private bathroom basin was low. So we ended up using the tap at the bathtub. Not a major issue for us.

I had a fantastic stay at this guest house in Takayama! The place was incredibly clean and organized, with a very quiet and peaceful atmosphere. It's located in a great neighborhood, not too far from the main train station, making it very convenient for exploring the city. The staff was exceptional - friendly, accommodating, and always willing to help. The living room was a lovely space to relax, and the kitchen was massive - probably one of the largest I've seen in any hostel! There was even a dedicated computer area with desktops, which was very helpful. The front desk had a reception area and an elevator for added convenience. Plus, there was a large flatscreen TV in the common area, perfect for winding down after a day of sightseeing. Overall, this guest house offered exceptional value for the price. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a clean, quiet, and spacious place to stay in Takayama!

Perhaps better English but they tried very hard and it was appreciated.
