Stairs are quite a lot and steep to get to room Complimentary Port wasn’t changed from previous persons stay - dusty bottle , half full, and cork was crumbling inside bottle . Lamp was dusty on shade and glass base. Shower tray would not drain away after use - but was reported and fixed same day . Didn’t know what to do in breakfast room , a buffet selection was provided but it wasn’t encouraged or announced by staff member if we could select from it . So we just ordered off the menu . Safe didn’t work , didn’t complain however as we kept valuables on us . Phone plugged in room but didn’t work , not sure if it was ornamently or supposed to work .

Very fair price for good quality accommodation. Well appointed and maintained. Nice ambience in room, and for me, one of the most comfortable beds I've slept in at a Hotel. Excellent Staff, attentive without being "fussy". Great location close to City Centre, but very quiet despite being above a Pub. Would have scored a 9 if (at least) a light Breakfast had been included...seemed "mean" not to include Cereal, Toast & Drink.

As above, not even a light Breakfast included. Only other quibble-no one explained all electric fittings were switched off in room at the sockets-including the TV. Once I had worked this out, the TV & Sky Box had to reboot...But no "help sheet " in room to tell you how to do this...

Everything ! The receptionist was full of energy and informative, made us feel welcome from the off. Went to the the bar where the staff were great and friendly. The room was clean and tidy , and had everything expected and more. The bed was comfortable and white bedding , which is always nice. The outdoor area at the rear is excellent , perfect for summer drinking and eatting out door. The best of all was the breakfast!!!! Wow !!! The cost on the menu was 13.50 for a full English, which was worth every penny. Thank you all at the city gate , it felt like a loved family business and we will definitely be back.

The corridors need a bit of love , carpets a little worn and the first impression of going to your room makes you expect the worst , when the rooms are great.

The hotel was really nice and unique, it had a lovely downstairs restaurant and bar, and the theme of the hotel ran throughout. The room was lovely and big, we were surprised, and there was a well stocked fridge and plenty of snacks available. There was air con in the room too which was ideal. My now boyfriend loved the room, in fact it was upon staying here that the next say we become official! The hotel was also happy to arrange flowers and any other extra for the room if desired, which was great. Very very clean and very comfy. We will be back!

The only downside was after paying for the flowers that were quite expensive (my choice) as a surprise for my boyfriend, the surprise was revealed as we checked in by mistake by the receptionist, bless her she felt very bad about this and provided us with free Prosecco as a sorry (we don't drink but we appreciated the gesture and thankful for this, no harm done!).

The staff were super - friendly, polite and helpful. The room and en suite were fabulous - quirky and fun decor with a coffee machine in the room too, not just a kettle. A free port to finish off the night and the other snacks were a nice touch. Toiletries were fab. The pub food was good, piping hot and good portion sizes! The hotel was perfectly situated as I was going to a concert at the cathedral, which was a five minute walk. I highly recommend the City Gate - it was excellent value for money and I will definitely book another stay.

A socket near the long mirror would be useful for the hairdryer cable.

Hotel was easy to find with parking across the street. We were greeted warmly, offered a late checkout, and headed up to our room. There is no elevator in the hotel that we were aware of, fyi. There is a large bar, lounge area as you enter that looked like it served locals as well as guests, which was nice. Room was well appointed with a nice touch of water and small glass of port upon entering. mini bar was very thoughtfully stocked. The building is older and the floorboard creaked a bit (we were on the 2nd floor). Bathroom was well equipped and beds were comfortable. Breakfast was continental as well as order from the menu, was quick, and tasty. Staff were all very kind and warm, and checkout was super easy. Great experience overall and we would certainly stay here again.

There was only one set of towels in the bathroom, even though two of us in the room. Mattresses were softer box springs and not memory foam. Stairs could be a challenge for some less physically able guests. But these were minor things.

The team go above and beyond We booked City Gate as a last minute little getaway between Christmas and New Year (without the kids!) some much needed time for us. We were not disappointed. Located within a quick walking distance of the city centre, parking areas and train stations it’s ideal. The room - we loved our room. Had everything we needed for our stay, comfy bed, sky tv was a bonus, nice decor, area to make drinks and get ready. Our room was warm, but the air con was perfect. We made use of our mini bar but not to the extreme, mainly because we would go to the bar if we wanted a drink. Bathroom - was large and decor has been well thought off. We loved the shower. The toilet did make a loud noise when it flushed, but when you put this into consideration of cost and service you receive from the staff it’s minor and something you can live with. Food - now this, we cannot rate the food high enough, breakfast is lovely, both continental and cooked (continental, full English and eggs Benedict fans here) Coffee is a good one too. We also booked a roast on our stay - one of the best roasts I’ve had, great selection, cooked to our liking in every way. Thank you chefs! Now when we say the staff go above and beyond, we were greeted every time with a smile and friendly chat. That in my book always sets a good tone. However, on our stay unfortunately my husband started having chest pains, which resulted in him needing medical assistance and getting to hospital.

City Gate is a lovely mix between pub and hotel, essentially a pub with rooms. good atmosphere and breakfast in the conservatory area was a nice change from a standard hotel dining room. The fridge with real milk and tuck offerings, both free and for sale were a great addition. Bathroom was spacious and good.

There is a pump noise every few minutes, we think related to the AC in each room. Not a problem but it did catch our attention. Probably better to have AC than not, it was a very warm weekend!

The staff are friendly and helpful. The room was superb with a couple of complimentary things that only minor but really appreciated (like fresh water and a cereal bar). Decor is cool and interesting; better than most chain hotels. Price is good and location is fabulous for bars and restaurants. Been here a few times and would definitely use again. desk was plenty spacious enough to work on my laptop all day.

almost nothing... would be nice if the rooms had safes but wasn't a deal breaker.

Staff so genuinely nice and helpfull! Excellent bar and really good restraunt. Very central location. Spotlessly clean. Nice pub garden with cover and heaters. Great selection of beers and wines. Had an excellent stay and will use again. Food and general service was way above expectations for the price paid.

On the first. Night we struggled with the heating controls but resolved this the following night. Nothing wrong and we didn’t ask anyone to resolve it just seemed to be a bit confusing as it’s a heating and and cooling system.
