The location is truly spectacular. Beautiful views, lovely walk on the rocks of the beach. Classic gulf island vistas. The restaurant was great for dinner and super accommodating to our big group. Cute cabin. Comfortable beds. Very quiet. The sound of the rain on the metal roof was lovely. Even with a pub and restaurant next door, we hardly heard any traffic. Big enough for a family of 5 to sleep comfortably with a small kitchenette for self-catering. It is across the street from the water, but the road is very quiet. Beautiful sandstone formations, arbutus trees, blackberry bushes to pick in the rain. Cozy living room area in the lodge when the restaurant is closed. My eldest child played creepy songs in a minor key on the out of tune piano, and it was beautifully atmospheric. Great for our family for a short stay to connect with other family members camping near by.

There's nothing else there, so if you didn't bring breakfast or coffee, it's a drive away. Come prepared. No breakfast options available and no tea or coffee available in the morning in the main lodge. The bathroom door did not close completely. There was also no large pot -- we had planned to cook pasta for dinner as a quick way to feed teens. It rained for the entire time we were there (about 20 hours) and there wasn't really anywhere to hang coats, put wet boots and just a small mat for wet shoes, so our room got a little soggy. I don't mind the rain, but usually in this area places are better set up for it with hangers and mats.

We absolutely loved our stay at the Surf Lodge! The location is stunning—right across from the beach where we actually got engaged. What made our stay even more memorable was the kindness of the staff. When they found out we had just gotten engaged, they surprised us with complimentary dessert and drinks to celebrate—it was such a thoughtful and heartwarming gesture. The lodge has such a cozy, welcoming feel, and everyone made us feel so at home. We’re so grateful to have shared such a meaningful moment in such a beautiful place. We’ll definitely be back!

Liked the self contained cabin - but there was no orientation when we checked in - we were just given the keys and told where the parking was. Beds were comfortable and wifi was good.

No Extra toilet paper or extra towels in the cabin - there were six of us. There is no toaster in the kitchen or drying rack for the dishes. There should be wasp traps we couldn't sit outside with food or wine. The driveway has way too many pot holes - it might be an idea to have extra gravel to fill those holes especially after heavy rains.

Our visit was to celebrate our anniversary and from making the booking the wonderful staff here did everything to make it special in a very romantic lodge on the BC coast. The staff reserved the best window seat, overseeing the rugged coastline, along with a perfectly cooked roast beef dinner with the biggest Yorkshire bake and delish lemon cheesecake! Little touches everywhere in our room, including locally made island soaps and fresh cream for coffee!

Everything was special, giving us a true sense of the beautiful Gabriola island.

A great location, and wonderful to stay at a family run pub with character and history, so much nicer than a generic impersonal hotel chain. The place is dated but that is half the charm. We lucked out in that we happened to be there for an open mike music jam session which attracted some local island talent - a wonderful way to spend a summer's evening.

Location was excellent and the cabin was well equipped, clean and quiet. The shoreline was beautiful albeit rocky slabs and provided a lovely place to sit and enjoy the day.

The restaurant was very disappointing. The salads had poorly chosen greens, tomatoes tasteless and rubbery, cucumbers tough, and old lettuce. The seafood chowder was too salty and highly flavoured such that the delicate taste of the seafood was overpowered. It arrived after a very very long wait and the sauce had a skin on it.

We loved the location! The lodge itself had so much character and it showed all the love that’s been put into it over the years. We so appreciate the care that’s been put into it.

The only thing I can think of would be the shower in our room. And I say this because I am a tall person and would have liked slightly a bit more room to move around. Otherwise all amenities were exactly what we wanted.

Amazing oceanfront view! Prime quiet location Comfortable yet rustic room Great staff

Room was dated but comfortable. We were there at the end of April so the noise from the festive restaurant/pub (Friday kereoke) onsite was not a big deal. It might be if you had your windows and doors open.

After checking out, I couldn't find my cell phone. One of the workers let me back in the room, called my phone with hers. She then came out to my car with me to call it there. Got turned in at Mad Rona's, so was very lucky. Extremely helpful staff, stunning views. Quiet and could here sounds of the ocean from the room.

We came back around 10 pm from a friend's campsite and there was no hot water for a bath or shower.

We visited on a bike tour and the staff were really great helping us find our room after arriving late in the pouring rain. They also helped us with secure storage for our bikes. Room was small but clean and totally fine for our needs. Weather was mild when we were there but I would expect the rooms to get very hot in high summer. The pub on site was great to grab a beer after a day of cycling and we didn't have any noise issues despite our room being right by the entrance.
