The Japanese room that we stayed has a private bath. The balcony view from the room is breathtaking overlooking the city and Beppu Bay The hotel offers 4 family bath free to use in addition to the public bath was a big plus point. My wife and I had a wonderful and relaxing stay at the hotel. The services provided by the staff was top notch with Japanese hospitality in every aspect.

Location is a bit secluded but is okay overall.

My wife and I have traveled fairly extensively in Japan over the last decade or so, and Matsubaya has become our favorite place to to go for a deeply relaxing stay. This is a place that we will return to again and again. The staff are exceedingly welcoming, warm, and helpful. The rooms are well appointed, and ours had a very nice city/sea view. We took time to enjoy all the private/family baths, and they're all just lovely. The cafe/bar/lounge area with complimentary coffee, drinks, and draft beer was a welcome surprise that we really enjoyed. We also thought the traditional Japanese breakfast was above and beyond our expectations. Bottom line: excellent service, excellent food, excellent everything.

Nothing. Some other reviews have complained about the location being remote and hard to find, but we didn't have any trouble finding it, and the location on a hill on the outskirts of the city is actually a positive, as far as I'm concerned. It's quiet, and you feel closer to nature than you do the city. Still, there are some convenience stores and a few local restaurants within walking distance, which you might not even need, since the meals available from the ryokan are excellent (but if you do venture out for a meal, I recommend checking out nearby Himedaruma for some great yakitori).

Wonderful amd genuine people!! Special thank you to Maria, Sushma, Toyota and the extremely pleasant and strong gal who carried my luggages on her own and waited in the rain to send me off. They are the best and I shall be back! Breakfast and dinner are to die for. So delicate. They even placed a little placeholder with the name of your room on a dining table where you will be sitting. So neat.

Very helpful and accommodating staff. Exceptional services and attitudes. They even cleaned our car! Cleanly kept rooms and private baths, which are wonderfully furnished in different themes and types of onsen. Nice meals made with freshly picked ingredients.

Dinner is awesome. Service is great. Staff could communicate in English and being very helpfel. Minibar at the lobby is fabulous. I have difficulty in finding parking place. I am sure it is clearly marked in Japanese. Unfortunately, I could not read Japanese. Nevertheless, staff guild us to parking spot right way at sight of my car approaching. Just small turbulance. Overall experience is fanastic.

There was a lounge to get drinks, the tatami room was big enough for 4 people, and the food was great! I also liked the private onsen in room as well as the family onsen in the property

checkout time earlier than most places and slightly far with no public transport access.

The room was amazing. The tatami room was so cool and the outdoor onsen was so pretty and perfect. There were so many amenities that I didn't expect that made the stay extra special.
