Wow! What a special place! We spoke to so many people who had stayed at The Cottage Hotel on multiple occasions. Why do we intend to revisit too? I have stayed at hotels all over the world but this one has something that sets it apart. In most places there are little things that could be better. There was nothing at this one, e. g. water didn't leak from the shower door, the house keeping staff were thorough and replaced items as required on every occasion. Eating in the restaurant is a very special experience. There is a unique ambience created by the staff in the way that they interact with guests and their attention to detail. This I think is due to how well the Manager oversees everything. Everyone cares and takes a pride in doing things well. The food was very good too! Thank you to everyone for making our holiday so special. Oh, I forgot the sun loungers on the balcony overlooking the beautiful cove!

I wouldn't change anything.

This is an authentic English hotel stay; unashamedly traditional in service and decor. You sense that you could be there at any time in the last century. This is not contrived but rooted in the history of the property which has grown from a guest house to a medium size hotel over the years. Location is ideal - close but far enough from the front - as are the views. Both cold and hot breakfast options were more than sufficient - the kippers were the best I have had for some time - and the service was excellent. All of the staff members we met treated us as guests at all times; they seemed aware of and in tune with the heritage of the property.

The short walk to the hotel is quite steep so worth considering if this might be an issue. It was not a problem for us but if you are carting small ones or have mobility issues worth considering.

Breakfast was great, staff are super friendly and helpful. The room itself was not really up to standard. The bathroom in particular the sink cracked, mould in bath and enamel worn away. Very outdated including a hair dryer that was stuck to the wall and you had to hold the switch so it worked. I’m not sure what Type of clientele they think are coming to this beautiful spot by the sea. The view is to die for overlooking the bay and the sunsets are spectacular. The afternoon tea is sumptuous. The hotel is quiet which is appreciated but you may feel it a bit stifling if you have young children as it’s still run very old fashioned. Overall I did enjoy our stay and would return but would be nice if they modernised the rooms and hallways and landscaped gardens. It does miss this touch.

Location is great! Very attentive, friendly and helpful staff. Views are amazing. Food is lovely. Fantastic cream tea. Lots of history to soak up, and overall a nice relaxing vibe. Nice quality toiletries too.

The fire alarm going off at 3am (it was handled very well though with a big apology the next day from the hotel manager!) The restaurant menu is a little confusing but not a major issue i.e. the random side of veg. Concerning there could be a lot of food waste here. They should really ask if you want milk, or extra veg etc. One of the bathrooms was tiny but again, not a major issue but hardly any room to move around. The rooms could do with a bit of improvement and some updating i.e. some mould in the bathroom.

The combination of its traditional, relaxed atmosphere, excellent service, superb food and the wonderful views make this hotel truly exceptional. Our room was smallish, but we'd booked a 'budget' room in the original cottage part of the hotel and knew that it would be smaller that some of the others. Nonetheless, it was quite adequate for our needs, had a pleasant shower, plenty of wardrobe space and a lovely view of one of the two beaches at Hope Cove and the cliffs beyond. The hotel has been extended several times over the years and has many different areas in which to relax, including a snug that's been constructed to look like a cabin in an old ship. The nautical theme continues with the bar front being made from the hull of an old fishing boat, a photo of which can be seen on the wall nearby. The public rooms and corridors are covered in photos of some of the many shipwrecks that have occurred in the area. There's also a picture of the crew of a wrecked ship who recuperated at the hotel after their rescue. It's interesting to see if you can find the original fireplace that they were assembled in front of. The restaurant has a long run of windows overlooking the second beach, the surrounding rocks and the Bolt Tail headland. The sunsets from there were absolutely spectacular. The staff at the hotel were extremely pleasant and clearly took pleasure in helping you in any way they could. Dressed in their formal clothing, they looked very smart. Breakfast was excellent, with a wide range of cereals and fruit to choose from and a self-service hot buffet, plus the option to order freshly-cooked eggs from the kitchen in any style you wanted. But the crowning glory of the hotel was its superb evening meals. Being Table d'hôte, there was a multi-course menu with a good but limited choice for each course, which changed daily. All our meals were cooked to an extremely high standard, beautifully served and absolutely delicious.

I'm only writing this here because there wasn't space above and it's not a criticism at all. It took a while for us to realise that the prices on the menu were for non-residents and that for residents like us on a B&B tariff, there was a fixed price of £22 (in April 2025) for all the courses, which was excellent value. Compared to the pub in the cove which was selling fish & chips for £20, the food at the hotel was outstandingly good value for money for such high quality. All in all, we'd recommend this hotel without hesitation and will definitely return at some point in the future.

Location and views were fabulous. Staff were excellent - very attentive and more than happy to attend to every request. Room was adequate and bed was OK. Balcony with view was brilliant. Food was delicious - both dinner and breakfast. Overall, it felt like a successful version of what Faulty Towers was aiming to be. :-)

Room and bed were both a little small considering what we paid. It was a real shame that they didn't make their ability to cater for plant-based food preferences much more obvious. We're not vegan, but it would be great to incorporate more plant-based options into the main menus - just to give everyone the chance to make more healthy and environmentally sustainable choices. After I had a meat-based main course, I asked if there were any dairy-free dessert options and the waiter told me they had several but that they were 'secret'. I had a vegan chocolate tart and it was delicious (although I believe bought in). The non vegan food was delicious, so I have no doubt that the chef could come up with more home-made plant-based options of a similar standard.

The location was stunning and the most beautiful sunsets. The staff couldn't do enough for you. We had the 5 course meal and it was amazing.

We booked a standard balcony and wasn't aware these are not private balconies. Also a light over the mirror by the dressing table would be helpful. Room 132. These are minor criticisms and have not stopped me booking again for next year and certainly didn't spoil our wonderful 3 night break.

First of all, we had quite a few luggages as we went on a whole week stroll through Devon. Because of this, the staff decided to upgrade our room to no extra cost. They were very accommodating and the room overlooked the sea. We chose to have dinner at the hotel and what a dinner that was: the service and the food were amazing and the price was reduced for all the guests of the hotel. The hotel is a stone's throw away from the beach and the view blew us away. The room was extra clean and the bed was super comfortable. The bathroom was equipped with all the toiletries one needs. I definitely recommend this place to everyone. Enjoy! :)

This hotel is a gem! Overlooking Hope Cove, it's a perfect location. Room was excellent, all staff were on the ball and service from them all was their top priority. Truly exceptional and so glad we booked here for our wedding Anniversary. They made a lovely special menu and "Congratulations" decorations on our table for dinner when they knew it was a celebration. We cannot fault this hotel, truely exceptional! and they have a bank of chargers too in the upper car park if you need to charge your electric car.

Nothing more they could have done, it was excellent

The location is stunning. Sleeping to the sounds of the sea, was very relaxing. The staff were all so helpful. David in the dining area even offered to move our breakfast table to the window area when a table became free. The scrambled eggs at breakfast were the BEST we have ever had in a hotel. We loved sipping our drink from the bar in the cosy old sea cabin.
