We were lucky to be able to spend three nights at Flame Tree Estate, and we loved every minute of it. The estate enjoys stunning views over the jungle, and it is easy to drop into a peaceful bliss. All of the staff were outstanding, friendly, attentive and very keen to make each guest’s stay perfect. We enjoyed learning about the spices, fruits, trees and natural medicines on our guided walk with Hearth. The food throughout our stay was excellent and the kitchen was happy to tailor meals to suit individual needs and tastes. Our room was very comfortable and it was lovely being able to learn about the history of the furnishings and artwork it contained. Thank you to all of the staff for making our stay an experience that we will never forget.

Absolutely nothing could improve our stay.

This place is an oasis paradise in the middle of the jungle. Flying Squirrel room was very large, comfortable, with the best bathroom and rainshower I've ever seen. The room is very comfortable and bed comes with mosquito nets although we didn't need them in September. The infinity pool to watch sunset falling through the palm trees is spectacular. Inhouse drinks are well made, with the fresh mango juice tasting so pure. Dinner ($17 for 2 courses, $20 for 3 courses) has both a vegetarian Sri Lankan curry & rice option and an alternative seafood option (Sri Lankan is better, although might feel expensive for curry & rice). Breakfast is a huge plate of fresh fruit, bread and scrolls with housemade pineapple jam and marmalade (both excellent), and a choice of hoppers or omelette or full English. There are a lot of staff and all are friendly. The manager looked after us throughout, and the owner also came out to meet us. The property is slowly becoming self-sufficient by growing, using and selling its own produce. Prices include service also.

Only staying 1 night. The place needs at least 2 nights to enjoy it fully.

Our first trip to Sri Lanka and we discovered the best of the country in one place. Beautiful location, serene, peaceful, most comfortable rooms and beds, wonderful views from terraces, lovely food, and above all the very best of service from charming staff. Nothing was too much trouble, from organising our transfers, a lovely day out in Kandy and massages to the beautiful tray of morning tea brought to our room. A big thank you to everyone for looking after us and making our stay so special and memorable.

Our stay was too short!

We enjoyed everything about this stay! For us this place was great to explore sights nearby Kandy, as well as a region around Sigiriya. Afterwards it was pleasant to return to the hotel and have a rest away from noise and rush. There were everything we needed in the room. Dinners and breakfasts were delightful. There is plenty of wildlife around the hotel that you can meet. We found management of the hotel very professional and attentive. It is impossible to describe all about the villa and facilities of the hotel in short review. We can just advise to stay here if you are traveling in Sri Lanka.

A jewel of a hotel. A magnificent waluwaa which has been lovingly restored and decorated. The art collection is mesmerising especially for anyone with an interest in Sri Lankan art and history. David has done a superb job and we only wished we had stayed longer. The meals on the vernada were superb quality and portion sizes were just right. We enjoyed a walk around the estate grounds. Highly recommended and would lend itself to a longer stay as a well located base and so much nicer than being in Kandy or a large impersonal hotel.

Too short a stay !

This property is a hidden gem nestled in the lush hills of Kandy. The peace and serenity it offers are beyond words. The rooms were spacious, beautifully designed, and offered stunning views. The staff were warm, incredibly attentive, and made us feel like family. The food was delicious and freshly prepared with local ingredients. It’s the perfect place to disconnect and relax in nature.

Nothing at all everything was perfect and exceeded our expectations.

I really enjoyed my stay in The Flame tree state hotel.. the hotel seems like an art gallery full of antiques and art works with lovely bohemian decorations and nice colors.. the terrace room was awesome with the open roof shower touches the nature around . The staff are so good and professional specially the hotel manger Mr. Angelo, and the assistant manager Mr. Thushara . The resturant guys also are so nice and did their job very well. I hope to come again to this hotel and recommend it for anyone who love arts and quiet unique place

Beautiful couldn't fault it. Was beautiful waking up to nature was so idyllic and peaceful for the soul. The food was delicious and staff were kind, attentive and friendly. Pick up sorted from the airport at Colombo which was about 3 hours away. Appreciate it. The pool was stunning with views of the jungle. Wear long trousers, the leaches are out in force. The natural pil shampoo and conditioner and body was was divine. Thanks for having us.

One of the best hotels I’ve stayed at. I felt like a privileged house guest in this beautifully decorated colonial style hotel. It had an incredible 1930s vibe that would make the perfect setting for an Agatha Christie murder mystery! If Hercule Poirot had turned up in the library to partake in a tisane I wouldn’t have been surprised! The location was utterly breathtaking, the rooms were charming and super stylish and the jazz music playing in the background created the perfect ambience. The owner is a very entertaining character and should be incredibly proud of what he has achieved here. It’s a truly exceptional hotel and estate and I am not one to give praise lightly! I would return to Sri Lanka just to stay here again.

What’s not to like?! Perhaps a small mini fridge in the room or tea/coffee making facilities would have been nice, but certainly not a big deal.

An extraordinary place. Beautifully located in a dense forest, architecturally stunning, very classy decor, fabulous, attentive and genuinely friendly staff at all levels, and a friendly owner. And very good food (including a good range of vegetarian options). A special experience.

Nothing. We were fortunate to have visited in the low season and there weren’t many other guests around so I can wonder whether the experience would be different with a full house (as it is quite small) but that’s only a hypothetical. :-)
