This was a spacious suite in the Palmer's annex across the parking lot from the main hotel. So it was quiet and had very low people traffic. A bedroom, bathroom, and living room setup with a semi-private balcony sitting area down the hall - perfect for train watching. No one above to disturb us and no one below for us to disturb. A fun turn-of-the-20th-century hotel experience. Location is impossible to beat. We've stayed at the hotel several times over the years and will do so again.
Disclaimer: we're Boomers, but not totally inept when it comes to technology. However, operating the TVs was way too complex - two remotes that needed to be coordinated in a non-intuitive way. Never did get the living room TV figured out. AC/heating units were almost as tricky, but we persevered. Millennials - including our kids - may chuckle at all this, but technology marches on [harumph, harumph] and your turn will come!

This is my second stay at The General Palmer. I was riding the train this time. This hotel is close to the train station, making it the perfect place to stay. A real perk is being able to park in the lot if you have a reservation. It is a real time saver. The General Palmer continues to be my favorite hotel in Durango. I hope to visit often. This time I had an inside room. It was wonderful. Large, yet cozy, clean, comfortable with elegant furnishings, with real coffee cups. I am in my sixties, and so enjoy the classic elegance. The staff are on top of everything and went out of their way to welcome me and help with my bags at my late arrival back from the train. My room had a split heater/cooler which made it easy to keep the room comfortable.
I really cannot think of anything. The General Palmer exceeds my expecations.

Beautiful, well maintained and spotlessly clean historic hotel. Easy walk to downtown. Room was in the center of the hall thus no windows. This was not an issue for us. The bed, linens and towels were all great quality. Coffee, tea, water was available 24/7 with fresh baked cookies in the afternoon. Chandler was friendly and so knowledgeable about the area, restaurants and sights to see. We are at Perbocca upon his recommendation and it did not disappoint! All floors had a lovely coffee station open early am and a balcony that over looked the train station. Great fun watching the steam engine leave the station and blow its warning horn. Antique furnishings throughout the hotel along with a small but efficient elevator. Free breakfast with typical eggs, breakfast meat, potatoes, cereal, fresh fruit, danish, make your own waffle iron and bread. Great stay all around!

It's a lovely old hotel that provides a break from chains. A couple of small parlor like rooms in the hotel are nice for people watching. And the breakfast is more complete than the continental breakfast indicates (eggs, sausage, pastries, waffles, yogurt, cereal, oatmeal, toast--all self serve). There is a nice outdoor patio for sitting in the sun. They have coffee and tea out all day and put out the coffee at 6:30 in the morning on each floor. For an old hotel, they have lots of outlets. The location is great, right next to Rocky Mountain Chocolate factory.
We had an exterior room. It did not have a room darkening shade and our room was quite light all night. The closet is in the corner and difficult to access. There is no access to fridge or microwave, which we've grown used to having for our restaurant leftovers. The coffee was not very hot--it sits out in the coffee urn and cools off quickly and without any microwave we couldn't reheat it. The carpet in the rooms is in bad shape. It seemed cleaned but it's stained and dark and just detracts from the room quality.

Excellent location right on Main Street, walking distance to all kinds of locations (restaurants, local ice cream shop, local winery, food truck location, etc) The staff was extremely friendly, helpful and personable, the room was spotless( with instant hot water). The Durango & Silverton Railroad Depot is directly behind the hotel, great for train watching. The first train whistle is promptly at 7:40 AM, so you don't need to worry about oversleeping (I don't mind the sound, I find it comforting).

We picked this hotel for its convenience and its history and it did not disappoint on either score. It has a lovely historic feel and it is right in the centre of town so very convenient for restaurants and shops (and the train) It also has free parking on site. The front desk staff went out of their way to be helpful.
No complaints but do make sure you book a room with a window (there are a number of internal rooms without windows)

Nice old hotel. The lobby is full of charm and the veranda is nice to take breakfast or have an afternoon coffee and cookie ( all complimentary). The beds were confortable and the bathroom was nice. Durango is a charming, albeit touristic, city where one can actually wander by feet and eat on nice terrasses in the summer.
We had a family suite with two rooms and a smallish saloon. It is in the 'palace wing' ie the annex. Even though it is just across the parking lot and just as old. It doesn't have the charm of the main building. You just enter straight on a staircase (with no lift). To improve things we would always come back through the main lobby and through the back entrance on the parking lot, which goes through a nice terrace and has a lot more charm. Some windows give in a roof with the air con installations which lack a bit if charm, though beyond you see the mountains. Another point of attention is that it is next to the station if the Durango Silverton, which whistle from 7:45 in the morning. It is not horrible but this is not a quiet as it could be.

I loved it all. The fact that the hotel balcony overlooked the railroad itself was absolutely the best. And what a wonderful surprise for a train enthusiast! Inside the hotel was nothing but beautiful. You can tell there is so much history. The breakfast was also a pretty great surprise. There was iced water and coffee available at all times. And freshly baked cookies as well!
I really don't have any complaints.

We absolutely loved our stay at the hotel! The breakfast was fantastic, having fresh local coffee and tea at all hours was a bonus too. We loved the atmosphere and how unique the hotel was, it was refreshing to have character in a hotel rather than the same modern layouts and decor. Having the hotel right next to the train was perfect, and we were right down the block from tons of shops and restaurants, we didn't need our car the entire weekend! Would definitely book again!

Very clean, spacious and comfortable accommodation. Great location for railway and exploring Durango. Close to numerous restaurants. Free tea, coffee and cookies was great. Lots of seating around hotel. Staff were very helpful and friendly
Room very bright as only had nets and blinds which weren’t blackout. There were no curtains. As room had Veranda outside privacy could be a problem in warmer weather if blinds weren’t shut. Problems with TV.
