This hotel has an unique history and how it has evolved to present days and keeping the old charms. The room we had at this hotel was the biggest in our whole trip. We had a Japanese style Lakeview room. The futons were very comfortable. There were indoor and outdoor onsens. To access the outdoor natural onsen which is separated from Lake Shikotsu by a rock barrier, it involves a walk of about 3-4 minutes along a passage way. The lake water comes into the onsen through an opening. I find the onsen temperature very comfortable as compared to the indoor onsen which was a bit too hot for me. We had kaiseki dinner and buffet breakfast during our stay. The portion and variety was good. Breakfast was in the lounge that overlooks the lake while dinner was in the dining hall with table setting. The surrounding was peaceful and quiet and it is a good place to be just to relax and unwind.

The location on the lake is breathtaking and everyday it looks different. We learnt a lot about Japanese culture by staying here. The meals were delicious and beautifully presented. We can’t fault the kindness and respect the staff showed. It was excellent. A beautiful stay for 2 nights.

We struggled to understand what was expected of us when showering and using the public baths and Onsen. No one spoke much English to guide us so we could comprehend. We didn’t use the picnic baths and felt a little uncomfortable using the hot spring. Our toilet in our lake view room had a slightly unpleasant scent.

Fantastic night stay. Was picked up by shuttle bus at Lake Shikotsu village (ensure you request this when booking). Onsen was amazing: could choose from different temperature baths near the bath house. Two outdoor baths available for each gender: one being right down at the lake water line (80m along a covered wooden walkway). Had the Kaiseki dinner and it was amazing - tasty & so well presented. Was provided a shuttle bus back to the village in the morning after a hearty buffet breakfast. A must "do" for onsen experience. We were lucky with the weather: went in Feb = lots of snow but saw a beautiful sunrise & sunset.

Gorgeous location on the lake. Isolated from the world. Price value was good. Incredible Breakfast: make sure to try the hokkaido specialties. Staff is very nice. They don't speak much English but have endless patience speaking with phone translators. They offer a free shuttle bus to hotel guests. To get to the hotel from lake shikotsu village at 15:30 and 17:30. And to leave the hotel at 9am and 10am.

I only wish they would offer one more time for the shuttle bus. A little later so we could have seen the snow festival in the dark before having to lane.

The natural hot spring, as well as the onsen baths, feature what might be the most breathtaking view I have ever had the pleasure to experience. You feel like you are in the Shikotsuko lake, rather than in front of it. The service, staff, room equipment were absolutely spotless, and the irori kaiseki dinner we had was just A++ marks on all fronts, environment included. The fact that you cannot take pictures of the onsen except during the first 20 minutes of the cleaning shift adds to the magic, making it an experience during which you must and want to be completely aware, to take it in to the fullest and engrave the scenery in your memory.

Beautiful environemnt by the lake! The outdoor onsen was very nice. Breakfast at the lobby restaurant overlook the lake.

Dinner Kaiseki was average, but not bad. Given the price of the deal, totally fair! The hotel property has been renovated yet u could tell its a bit dated. Yet, I like it how they manage to maintain the property to a good standard

This was a beautiful way to start our month in Japan. The kaiseki dinner and the breakfast were both delicious. The onsen was gorgeous overlooking the lake. You could also refill your water bottles from water directly from the lake in the lobby. There is a cute gift shop with plenty of shimaenaga merchandise.

No complaints :)

The entire feel of the ryokan was exceptional. At first glance it may seem slightly dated but on further experience, it brings out the true experience of the ryokan and its history. The room I stayed in had beautiful view over the lake, and the bed was so comfortable! It was my first experience not having an individual toilet/bath in the room but the public bath was actually a surprisingly enjoyable experience. The public bath facilities were also well managed and the outdoor bath allow me to immerse myself in the beautiful nature of the lake. The service of the staff and the food served for breakfast and dinner were also top notched!

Nothing.

The hotel was very quiet and directly on the sea front. We had 2 western breakfast which were really good quality and then a fantastic japanese breakfast. They dont serve lunch nor dinner, but there are plenty of tables outside and in to have a drink. Staff are really lovely and very accomodating

I specifically created this vacation around the criteria of wanting, Onsen in Hokkaido in the winter. I wanted remote location, natural environment, nature, and snow to be falling around me while I was in the hot spring. I also wanted authentic decor, and history. Marukoma delivered. I loved everything about this place. The futons were perfectly comfortable. The service was excellent. The food was amazing! And the hot spring was perfect. I especially loved the cold plunge.

There was very little that we didn't like. I can't recall anything specific that we would suggest a change. I think the only thing that might have been a bit nicer would be more options for entertainment during the day. The village was nice but we unfortunately visited when the season ended so there was very little to do.
