I was on a tight budget for 1 person. Karelia has one small room with a single bed, so it was ideal for me, at a budget price. I spent my leisure time in their large lounging-area filled with quaint European memorabilia, Books, TV, and tea/coffee-making facilities. The included continental breakfast didn't quite suit my carnivore diet (health reasons) so Jerry (the owner) happily prepared me 6 poached eggs and bacon or salmon for only $20/day... BARGAIN!! On two nights of my stay, I had the very tasty and massive Lamb Shanks for Dinner at the Karelia restaurant. The waitress each night was a very helpful and friendly young lady.

I'd stayed at Karelia 35 years earlier so I knew what to expect.

I really like the nostalgic style of the decor—it feels like being in another country, very warm and cozy

When I arrived here, I knocked on the door but no one responded, and no one answered the phone either. The hotel is located on a hill and takes about fifteen minutes to reach on foot. It was a really unpleasant experience to be left standing at the entrance with luggage and no one there to receive me. I only received a call back after waiting for more than ten minutes. The room did not provide a toothbrush or disposable slippers, which was slightly inconvenient

Breakfast was excellent. The ambiance was excellent . The resident cuckoo nearby was poetic. Staff were more than helpful.

I would have like access to a microwave and a fridge. I knew there wasn't either in the room because I read the literature very carefully and I know the rooms dimensions ruled out either. I was able to arrange a work around but it did make the stay a little more challenging for me. The last three places I have stayed all had shampoo, body wash and conditioner dispensers in the shower and I was a little surprised by their omission. I would have liked something I could use to put my feet up in the otherwise excellent lounge. These weren't serious issues, more icing on the cake. I still rate the establishment as very good.

The décor and fixtures are something to behold , as someone that has been skiing in Austria this is the exact kind of thing you would find at a Austrian / Swiss / German / Czech resort and find it remarkably odd but also very interesting, you can’t look at anything without finding it oddly interesting The first person I met was Phil the chef who understandably didn’t know anything about checking in but was very welcoming and assured me someone would be along shortly to help me out (Phil is also the one man kitchen and produces some authentic Swiss cuisine ) Jerry popped up the stairs showed me my room and gave me the run down for breakfast and the sauna and and spa and let me get to unpacking my things , met him down stairs at the bar later and he will give you some great details of falls creek being a stalwart since the 80s. The staff at Karelia are lovely , Vera and Sara will give you any info that you need to get you around the resort to have a good time , Vera is really knowledgeable on venues within the resort and Sara can make any kind of cocktail you can think of ! There is also another lovely cleaner / lady that serves breakfast sorry I forgot your name but is so very helpful and lovely. Breakfast was classic continental 8-9 am you’ve gotta be ready and not at all hungover. but a small selection of hot breakfast from the kitchen Bacon eggs and toast for a big day of skiing , who could refuse especially if they’ve talked you into having their famous boot shot the night before. The bar downstairs opens from 5 decent selection of European beers and liquor, the fondue was excellent. Service from Sara was fantastic and you can see that the small operation of this hotel works well together.

Because it is a small team , sometimes you can’t find Jerry the owner for specific questions but the other staff make up for this with pure charm

Why go to Europe when you can enjoy a similar experience in this unique and authentic Alpine-styled lodge right here in the Australian Alps. Host Jerry was accommodating and attentive. He and all of his staff, chef Phil as well as Śyama, Vera and Sarah were welcoming, warm, friendly and helpful during my stay. My single room was perfect; warm, cosy and comfortable. I did my research and its price was the best and cheapest I could find in all of Falls Creek. Breakfast offerings (continental and cooked) which are included in the price were very good and the personalised service was excellent. I can also highly recommend the braised veal shank and goulash pie, and nothing beats the taste and satisfaction of homemade bread provided in the restaurant. Karelia Alpine Lodge is well and conveniently located within walking distance to the village, bus shuttles and ski lifts. I loved my stay and if ever I decided to return to this picturesque part of Australia, Karelia would be my first choice.

Very amazing décor ..... German/Swiss style alpine lodge . Lots of dead stuff and cuckoo clocks on the walls(don't forget the piano accordion music) . Very warm and cosy feel with great bar/restaurant/Breakfast hall. Owner and staff were very friendly and try the "Boot shot" to warm you up. No other accommodation in the area offers this style of hospitality .

This is not a 5 star hotel .... its an slightly quirky and eccentric experience . I loved every minute but if that's not your thing you may not feel the same way .

What a find! Nestled in the Falls Creek hills, this Swiss Chalet-style accommodation made our first trip to the area extra-special. Comfortable, cute, and well-appointed, with exemplary service from Jerry, Sharma and the entire staff. Included breakfast was delicious; made-to-order hot options were an added bonus. My Mum is Vegan and the chef went above-and-beyond to ensure she left a couple of kilos heavier. The lounge with open fireplace was a nice nook to relax in after a long day on the slopes, and the spa and sauna were heavenly on the aching bones. There is a bus at the end of the street to take you straight to the lifts (if there isnt enough snow), and when there's heavy snow, you can ski all the way there. I accidently left my phone in the drying room one morning – one phone call and the staff were quick to tuck it away safely for me. I really can't fault my stay – we will absolutely be back. Thanks to Jerry and the crew! Best, April and Caroline.

The worst part about our stay was having to leave. We already miss Karelia!

Great breakfast and facilities. Staff and hosts are wonderful people. Nothing to complain about.

Personal transport is run by governing body and lacks in versatility. Uber style smaller snowcats for 4 would be a great addition for those of us who don’t ski around. To be able to call a “cab” and get door to door service would have increased our spend and broadened our experience significantly. For the benefit of all businesses and stayers I would urge the governing body to consider allowing “Uber style” service to compliment the existing general public transport service.

Breakfasts were very nice. Facilities were great, cosy, lounge area, spa, etc. Next time i will get a bigger room if I can afford it.

The room was, even for a bunk bed room, way too small. We couldnt move about in our room at the same time as each other. That was the only thing we didnt like other than the high cost of $700/nite for 2 single bunk beds in a tiny room only to sleep in. Had a nice balcony area..but obvioiusly too cold to sit out there for long.

The Swiss Chalet ambiance Jerry, the owner was super helpful. and has gone out of his way to serve us

Rooms were small, but understandable the need to keep it warm efficiently. The double bed was small, I guess being used to king size bed at home
