perfect location , very clean and hygienic , will go again

the cleaning starts at 10 a.m. and everyone has to leave their rooms for a couple hours. not perfect for summer holidays where you stay out late and would like to sleep in. also if you’re used to staying in hotels -where you choose when you wake up rather than the staff choosing for you- , this is not ideal. but at least everything was very clean everyday.

Peter was the loveliest and most helpful staff member I’ve encountered staying in hostels. He spent time showing me where to go and even texted me after I’d left to let me know that my train would be replaced by a bus and where to go - I wouldn’t have known this otherwise. So thank you Peter! The hostel itself is immaculate, the beds are comfy, the bathrooms are spacious. Location right by one of the stassis, everything is walkable in Matera and the hostel is on a quiet street, slept really well.

Only downside is that it’s shut from around 11-3 so if you needed to collect your bag around that time you can’t but this wasn’t an issue for me

I arrived by FlixBus and the hostel was a ~25 minute walk from the bus stop. It’s a flat walk, and can be done via mostly main streets so it’s very doable. Hostel is a short walk to Sassi - felt safe walking back to the hostel of a night. Small supermarket close by. Overall a great location. Hostel was clean. Bed/dorm basic but nice. Lockers provided however, it didn’t fit my 55L backpack in it. Room was big enough though to allow space for bags. Staff friendly and can make stove-top meals in the kitchen. Had no issues with the WIFI during my stay.

• There was a portable air-conditioner in the room however, I didn’t find this to be super effective. The room was too hot for me personally. • 2 toilets and 2 showers provided in the female dorm however the shower screens/layout isn’t fully private. There’s some black out contact stuck to only parts of the shower screen. The hook is also outside of the shower. Can work around this though if you prefer more privacy.

The Rock Hostel is situated in a fantastic location, just a short distance from the Sassi of Matera. The staff was absolutely wonderful, particularly Peter, who assisted me in finding the airport bus timetable and departure point. He was also kind enough to store my backpack on my last day and let me stay until the late bus departure. As for the room, it was impeccably clean and very comfortable. Overall, my stay exceeded my expectations! I highly recommend this hostel!

I had been in Matera before, so I really wanted to come back. The Rock Hostel is "about" 15-20 minutes away from bus or train, but a very manageable walk. Its location is perfect, right at the edge of the Old Town. There's a fully stocked grocery store next door (bonus !!!) ...the kitchen/reception/social area is pretty spacious & kept very very clean. Each bunk has its own plug, light, etc & a reasonably size locker. The bathroom is very clean; good showers; the staff come & clean it every morning. I would definitely recommend & I would definitely return! As a solo traveler I felt very safe & comfortable ... . . .. . . nicely quiet, I can imagine spending more time there. The staff, very friendly & warm -------- and kudos to them, they try very very very hard to make sure everyone is happy! <3

curtains around the bed would be nice -- I stay up late reading, so I was conscious that I'd be keeping the others awake w/ the light. The only "little" thing was that my bus connection was suddenly delayed by 2 hours & I was worried I would not get there by 8:00pm, so, I was nervous about what would happen. Perhaps impliment a "late check-in policy" & charge the person a bit more for late check in, in case of emergency...?!?! Just an idea for the future!!!

Peter was brilliant and really helpful in giving me a location on where to find parking. i found the hostel to be located in a near nice place where i could keep my car safely for 2 days and walk around the old town. peter also got me a bottom bunk after me requesting the same.the hospitality was brilliant in all sense.will stay again if i ever come back

Staff were helpful and informative. Room was well lit with lockable lockers for belongings. Decent bathroom/showers en suite. Communal area was fine as well. Short walk to the Sassi/old town - about 10 minutes. Strict check-in time of after 3pm but arrangements can be made to drop bag off between 9am & 12 if arriving early, which I did - no problem!

We had the best time in matera thanks to this lovely hostel. It is in perfect location, next door to a supermarket and less than a 5 minute walk to the stunning old town. The staff were so helpful and friendly and the kitchen facilities were perfect for what we needed.

Only issue was that the dorm was incredibly warm and the aircon didn’t seem to change the temperature, but we highly recommend this hostel for anyone looking to stay in Matera.

All went very well ! I stayed at The Rock in October '24 and wanted to go back there whenever a "good" air-ticket became available. The staff is super friendly and helpful and the hostel is very well situated, a very short walk from the splendid "site" of the Sassi (Historic Matera)

I cannot think of a thing I did not like !

The staff is amazing, super friendly. There's a kitchen and open space with all that you need. The beds were fine with lights and electrical socket. The bathroom and shower offer enough privacy I don't know why there are some comments complaining about this. I guess some people never went to the gym to take a shower...
