Fantastic stay a traditional location. Best food we had on the whole trip, very fresh and local! Amazing service and hospitality. The staff was extremely kind and helpful and drove us to 3 different locations with their car so we could withdraw some cash from an ATM. We loved the onsen and natural water, there are many different baths inside and outside, public and also private. Beautifully decorated, lots of thought has been put into the hotel and we were welcomed with a crackling fire. Definitely highly recommend! Also easy to reach with an infrequent bus from Kamikochi.

An English sign at the entrance might have been useful as it is a very cute pathway and you don't immediately realize as a foreigner that that's the entrance to the hotel.

This place was wonderful and one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. Yumoto Choza is certainly expensive but if you fancy splurging then you won’t be disappointed. We had 1 night in this traditional ryokan and everything about made it a super fun experience. There are 3 private semi open air onsen onsite, each with inside and outdoor baths - perfect for couples and families wanting to bathe together. There is no reservation system but we always found one free. There are 5 more private open air onsen along a creek just 2 min walk away and free of charge. Sitting in the hot water watching and listening to the river was so calming. The location of the Ryokan was nestled in a mountain village with a beautiful view of the Japanese Alps. The ryokan itself is gorgeous, quiet and has all the design elements and fixings of a traditional Japanese Ryokan. You will have to park your car in a parking lot a few meters from the hotel entrance. There's a covered path to reach the hotel. The family loved getting dressed in the traditional yukata and wearing them to the onsen and the kaiseki dinner. The Kaiseki dinner and breakfast, was memorable experience. The presentation is divine and we loved having our private dining room within the dining area. While the kids struggled with some of the food options, every dish was meticulously prepared and showcased tasty ingredients, creating a dining experience that was as delicious as it was memorable.

Having only spent time in Japanese city centers previously on my trip, Yumoto Choza was an absolutely singular experience in my life. The food was some of the best Ive ever had and the dishes were very unfamiliar and exciting to me. The rooms were very old fashioned and quite cozy. I loved the padded jacket! (and wish I could have purchased one) The staff were unbelievably kind and very helpful. I wish I had spent more time in the area. The trip out there is quite arduous but was completely necessary to get a bit farther from a city center into a more old fashioned environment. The onsens were plentyful and beautiful. You should go!

Wonderful ryokan in a relatively remote location. You can get there easily by bus from Takayama although it’s 40 stops away! The location itself is quiet and peaceful. In winter, it’s simply magical! I loved the ryokan’s in-house onsen. There are 3 private onsen available to all without any reservation required, and each one is both indoor and outdoor! However what I really liked most was the public onsen. The cypress baths were gorgeous and the water was just the perfect heat to ease my fatigue. The meals (dinner and breakfast) were so delicious, and they serve it to you in your own private room. As a solo traveler I wasn’t expecting a room all to myself but I was so pleasantly surprised with the arrangements. Lastly my room was just gorgeous. It had its own hearth, a balcony, and large windows that provided me a view of the wonderful snowy outdoors. This experience was the best and I cannot wait to come back.

It’s a beautiful traditional building with a cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. The vibe it’s what you pay for. There are private indoor and open-air onsen that need no extra money or reservation. Loved it!

There is no shower in the room but you can use the shower in the public and private onsen which are great, but you may not be used to it. The restaurant, although of high quality gourmet japanese food, struggled to adapt their fixed menu to vegetarian. They did try to but it seemed that they found it easier if we just left the food we didn’t want to eat.

The staff is extremely caring and helpful (several spoke English too). The ryokan is intimate, beautifully furnished in a , traditional way with the warmth and charm that can only come with age. The food was extraordinary and included great local dishes. There are several private and group onsen options including outside. Feeling the snow on your skin while sitting in the hot water and looking at the pillows of white on the trees is unforgettable.

There is a beautiful roofed walkway from the bus stop to the Ryokan but since the nice calligraphy with its name is in Japanese only we missed it. Having the name in Romaji would maybe destroy the image so perhaps instead I would suggest sending the info with directions from the bus stop.

It was probably the best hotel experience I've ever had! Having the experience of staying overnight in a traditional ryokan with onsen is unforgettable! I highly recommend everyone to visit this place for at least 1 night (with kaiseki dinner and breakfast). It is perfect for those who want to immerse themselves in traditional Japanese culture, enjoy the nature of the mountainous area and relax to a state of zen. For people with tattoos - there are really A LOT of private spacious baths (3 inside the building and 5 outdoors) with wonderful atmosphere and views, so don't worry about missing out on the bathing part of the ryokan.

This place is pure magic, you will live a Spirited Away like experience. There are many crossing corridors and hidden passages over 3 floors but don't worry, they will provide you with a map. At the floor 0 you will find the public baths with all commodities and also 3 wonderful private baths (accessible 24h) with indoor and outdoor hot water pools, showers and many amenities. The hall is fantastic with a Japanese style fireplace. They will serve your dinner and breakfast in a private room, you will taste the real typical foods in a sort of ceremony that will please your mouth and eyes for its beauty. Our king room was an actual apartment paved with tatami including a toilet, bedroom, living room with a view over the garden, a studio and a little place where you can set a fire to heat your water for a wonderful green tea or coffee. The bathroom had both a shower and a big wooden tub resembling a private onsen. Even if the place was completely booked we seldomly met someone around, we really felt to be teleported in another world. The staff is super kind and they will help you in anything you need. Strongly recommended.

This place is incredible! Beautiful zen spaces all throughout the property, many with a stunning view of the outdoor gardens. Very spacious and well appointed rooms. There were 3 very different onsens available - the outdoor one was my absolute favourite nestled among the rocks. The dinner was amazing and very traditional, with each dish a work of art.The staff were beautiful and not intrusive in any way. Location was superb with orange and yellow autumn leaves on display. Wow wow wow!

If I had to be picky, the pillows were unusual!

The location of the resort is wonderful, near a river, and next to the forest. The rooms were spacious and looked exactly like an old Japanese movie. We had dinner included, which was an authentic experience, served in a private room, with delicious food. The pools were amazing, and we could always find a place in the private ones. The distribution of the rooms is done in such a way that we felt like we were the only guests, even if the hotel was fully booked. I would totally recommend it for everyone who wants to have an authentic ryokan experience.
