What an utterly gorgeous heritage house that has been restored to period perfection! It felt like stepping into a 1920s time machine. I stayed in a small room within the main house and it felt incredibly cosy. Very comfy bed and the view from the window was so wonderful I refused to draw the curtains closed! It felt like staying in an exotic botanical garden. Several spaces downstairs lend themselves to sitting in comfort over a book or quiet conversation, though I hadn't time to indulge. Parking and unloading was in a private, secure area, on the carriage drive in the front of the house.

Booking.com doesn't mention that the least expensive room has a separate, albeit private, bathroom. For me this wasn't a bother as it's only a few meters from the bedroom to the loo, but it might irk some visitors! The owner graciously invited me to upgrade to a room with an en suite, but it wasn't necessary!

We loved the enthusiastic welcome Gina and her team, Mike and Privilege, gave us. Nothing was too much trouble! It’s like being whisked back a century to a time and place where the rich Randlords built small castles where they lived in supreme luxury - and we were invited to enter and share in living this enchanted life. Splendid time travel indeed! We were lucky enough to be upgraded to the Library Room which is sumptuously comfortable and has the most delicious en suite shower. Breakfast was an abundant delight, served in the gracious and beautiful dining room. Can’t wait to return and try out some of the other accommodation options.

Before even checking in Gina was in contact before I'd even arrived and offered to arrange hotel transfers for me. Which I didn't need as I had rented a car. Parking on site was secure and i never had any problems parking. She also offered a complimentary room upgrade before I'd arrived which was gratefully expected.The room and rest of the property are well looked after and it feels just like a home away from home ,If your in johannesburg you definitely won't find any were to stay at this price with hospitality and just amazing location and property 10/10 when I'm in johannesburg next time I know we're im going to be booking again thanks you Gina!

How do I put into words the hospitality I have been shown by Gina? She is truly amazing and literally goes above and beyond for her guests. I was spoilt enough with her generosity by putting me in the Boudoir Suite - A DEFINITE MUST FOR ALL! This place is exquisite and the food to die for. Thank you Gina, absolutely loved my stay here. Not even 5 Stars will cut it, 10/10

This place is truly special. It’s a collection of beautiful, chic 100-year-old buildings, each room with its own unique character and charm. The design is thoughtful and stylish, with so many lovely details that make it feel both elegant and deeply personal. The hosts are simply wonderful — warm, welcoming, and attentive. From the moment I arrived until the day I left, they made me feel completely at home. If I ever return to Johannesburg, this will be my go-to without question. Staying here isn’t just accommodation — it’s an experience in itself.

The most remarkable thing about this hotel is its owner! Ginny is the embodiment of charm and hospitality. Her boundless energy and enthusiasm are enough not only to run the entire property but also to personally assist guests in organizing excursions to Johannesburg’s unique attractions—even when it seems nearly impossible. Staying at this hotel is truly an unforgettable experience! The beautifully furnished and decorated rooms, luxurious lounges and dining area, exquisite furniture, and interiors that seamlessly blend early and mid-20th-century styles make this place absolutely worth returning to. A special thanks to Mike, the owner’s assistant—a warm-hearted, attentive, and tactful young man! As for minor shortcomings, they are easy to overlook—just like the little flaws of an old, dear friend.

The assisting staff isn’t particularly thorough when it comes to cleaning the rooms (floors and carpets). Additionally, the bathrobes carry lingering odors from previous guests. It seems that the staff may be taking advantage of the fact that the owner is very busy.

The Great Gatsby Houghton hotel room is an absolute gem! From the moment I stepped in, I was greeted by a warm and inviting ambiance that made me feel right at home. The bed was incredibly comfortable, with a plush headboard and soft bedding that ensured a restful night's sleep. The cozy reading area, complete with a bookshelf filled with books, was a delightful touch, perfect for unwinding after a long day. The armchair and small table with a lamp and decorative items added a charming elegance to the room. The view of greenery outside the window was refreshing, and the checkered flooring and framed pictures on the walls added to the overall aesthetic. What truly made my stay exceptional was the wonderful service provided by the lady landlord Gina and her colleagues. Their warm hospitality and attention to detail made me feel valued and well taken care of. I highly recommend this hotel room for its elegance, comfort, and the exceptional service. A truly memorable experience!

The location is perfect for access to tourist sites and the main business areas. I stayed in French 75 which was beautifully appointed and had everything I needed. The views over Johannesburg were especially beautiful. The property has many outdoor sitting areas to relax. The pool was fantastic for the hot summer days. The host, Gina was wonderful, hospitable and made sure all guests were taken care of. All the staff were professional, friendly and helpful. The property far exceeded my expectations and I will choose it for all my future stays in Johannesburg.

Gina was very sweet and welcomed me with a complimentary upgrade to a larger room. One of the employees offered me tea upon arrival and again the next morning to my room. The pool was lovely and there is lots of outdoor seating in the garden. I did not have the breakfast but I could tell that it was delicious just by the smells that made it all the way up to my room! The doggie is also the sweetest, only wish I could have stayed longer!

Because of the home’s age, the floors are creaky and the walls are thin. Whenever someone walks through the hallway or talks in their room, you can hear it. Totally understandable given the era of the home but it might not be the best for those who are light sleepers.

The place was ideally located for my needs. The decor and theme was beautifully integrated. Gina, the owner and host made all the difference though. She was super attentive, accommodating and engaging.

I would like, as we head into the colder season more warm blankets to be available in the rooms or alternatively an electric blanket to be available. Just an important note is to check when booking whether or not your room has an en-suite bathroom.
