poor lighting outside room - needs better lightning in order to put key in keyhole, struggle every time no swimming pool, lots of stairs Could do with stronger lightning in rooms restaurant- excluding breakfast - expensive. prawn curry only had 4 prawns. lots of customers smoking during meal time (not fault of restaurant but very annoying) need more fans in outdoor restaurant area - a bit hot compared to other similar styled restaurants in area staff lacking in knowledge regarding things to do around area

I loved this hotel, the welcome drinks were amazing. The size of the room, the aspect, the bed and the bathroom were really lovely. It was a comfortable stay all round. Breakfast was great, plentiful and fresh, made to order. The location was so good, right in the centre of Galle Fort, easy to walk the entire Fort area. I was interested in shopping at Barefoot although the shop in Colombo is much better. I had a massage at the Spa Ceylon branch on the corner from the hotel. It was a fantastic massage experience. We had dinner at 'The Archives' a short walk from the hotel and it was amazing, would recommend. I really enjoyed this hotel. before dinner we went for a drink at the Galle Fort Hotel, we sat on the verandah and enjoyed the history of the Fort. For a one or two night stay the absence of a swimming pool was not an issue. The hotel room was very comfortable as were the common spaces.

The staff, particularly the front desk, were exceedingly friendly. The location on one of Galle's main strolls is great; the fort's walls and the sea are only a few minutes walk away. Breakfast was good.

Good intentions notwithstanding, the service fell short several times. Our airport transfer initially didn't show up, and the staff member who had previously said we could message any time didn't answer messages and didn't pick up the phone -- eventually, our driver showed up one phone call to the reception and half an hour later. Then at the hotel, a staff member wanting to clean our room (that we had just moved into!) came knocking three times even though we had switched on the "do not disturb" light. At the price we paid (upscale Western hotel price), I'd expect more.

The property is in a great location within Galle Fort, the rooms well laid out with the exception of along mirror and/or a mirror with close plug but overall the room was comfortable as were the beds. The restaurant (1710) was great! As is often the case the staff make a stay and here The Merchant excelled, the team on the front desk were great as they were in Restaurant 1710 where we particularly enjoyed speaking with Panchali who was so personable and efficient, a real asset!

We stayed here for six nights. Breakfast was delicious and healthy... loved the juices. We had dinner here once and it was good. We appreciated restaurant recommendations in the area made by Ameen. He was gracious and always ready to answer questions, and bring us more water. He made us feel at home in the hotel. The shower is excellent. The location is central in Galle Fort but surprisingly quiet. It was a good base to explore the fort and the area surrounding Galle city.

The property is beautiful, and the Staff was courteous The breakfast was very good on the porch We stayed in the two bedroom Villa(it is 200m away from the main hotel area), which was quite spacious, and the Buttler was friendly and helpful The property is right in the galle Fort and lot of good cafes are in walkable distance

The Villa was dimly lit at night, so it is difficult navigating around a bit Lots of stairs so not suitable for old people or people with physical disabilities

Thanks so much to Shakila for taking such good care of us and going above and beyond to make our stay special. The Merchant is a breathtakingly beautiful old building lovingly restored and thoughtfully furnished - each piece is a beautiful piece of woodwork in Galle style and surrounded by beautiful old trees and lush gardens. The room is very comfortable and beautifully appointed with a balcony overlooking treetops and street action. Slept like a baby in this decadent bed. All the food and drinks are exquisite from the complimentary welcome drinks to the sumptuous breakfast!!! The kitchen team were super nice about doing vegetarian and vegan options whenever we asked and the mushroom breakfast curry was incredible!!! Outstanding location too - right in the centre of town - an easy and gorgeous walk to absolutely anywhere in Galle Fort!! Can't recommend this place enough!!!

Everything was perfect

The hotel is conveniently located right in the centre of the lively bars, restaurants and shopping area. The staff were super friendly and helpful and the service we had was exceptional. The room was spotlessly clean, large and airy with a huge en-suite shower. Food wise, the breakfast and evening menus were extensive and could be eaten outside in a shaded area or in the air-conditioned restaurant, the food quality was amazing. There was an outside bar area where you could sit and people watch and the drinks menu was comprehensive. I genuinely don't think the hotel could have done any more to make our visit more enjoyable. I cannot recommend this place more highly

There was absolutely nothing I did not like about this hotel, its location, the restaurant, quality of food or its staff.

The staff was incredibly kind and helpful, offering complimentary delicious fruit snacks and fresh juices each night. The cosy and comfortable atmosphere added to the overall enjoyment, and the hotel's central location made it convenient to explore the fort and nearby beach. I can't express enough how satisfied I was with my stay. Thank you, Merchant Hotel, for creating the best memory of my Sri Lankan trip. Highly recommended!

Nothing, everything was more than perfect.

Wow ..one of the better places we have been over the years literally around the world. And especially in Sri Lanka. Hence starts with a super refreshing fresh welcomr juice you can chose from the menu yourself. Check in fast and earlier possible than the official check in time. Whole hotel new and with a pretty classy design. Also infrastructure bat a rather very high level. Very cosy rooms with a super bathroom. The staff really extremely friendly, fast and helpful. Especially to be mentionned Amien at the reception. The breakfast simply delicious with good cafe or tea included (not always the case in Sri Lanka). Yet almost too much since two big rounds based on your menu preferences 🤪. Also the dinner delicious for a bit higher price (yet better food than a highly rated restaurant closeby). Super well located in the very center in Galle fort yet rooms all silent (on the other side of the road try tonic spa..very qualitative spa rooms and charmy colonial infrastructure with excellent massage for a fair price). Even so over 150 usd the night..its great value for money👍. Definitely a place to stay☺️!
