Excellent location, in a quiet area of Stone Town, in a dead end street with no traffic, but within walking distance of all attractions. Beautiful old building with traditional furniture and nice balconies. Very good à la carte breakfast with views of the city, on the airy rooftop terrace; only the crows are a nuisance, always waiting to steal your food. Friendly and welcoming staff overall.

No discount for a single room: you always pay for a double. No soundproofing as stated in the faciltities, nor free toiletries (except 1 small soap tablet). Fan in room 211 needs to be replaced (makes a terrible noise), in which case A/C is not really necessary during the night. Room was dusty and smelled like it hadn't been occupied for a couple of weeks. The garden is actually located behind the building: if better taken care of, it could be the highlight of this property for guests looking to unwind and relax (after all, it's called Garden lodge!); at present, it's only used to dry linen and collect empty plastic bottles.

A great place. Would have loved to stay longer! Very kind staff, especially Amiri who arrangered for our trip to Prison Island and Nakupenda sand bank and gave us a wonderful city tour and good fair prices. Thank you for your exceptional service Amiri! Garden house was very clean. The staff is very Kind and helpful. A quiet and safe area close to everything you need. AC working, fan working. The shower has ok pressure. Garden house was really a garden with beautiful flowers. The furniture also gives a taste of Zanzibar culture. The breakfast was amazing, and such a kind breakfast host serving us. We got everything we needed for a fair price!

Nothing. Except remember to close the windows so you don’t wake up to the morning prayer 05:30. when we closed the windows we heard nothing. The area is very quiet, more quiet than in the middle of Stone Town.

Good, quiet location close to the historic old town of Zanzibar. All the main sights are in walking distance. Nice house with lots of greenery in an area with some impressive buildings and a tree-shaded square. Friendly staff (though could be more responsive sometimes). Breakfast on the rooftop was good - very friendly service there. The guesthouse was our base for both Stone Town and other parts of the island.

The fridge in our room wasn't working when we arrived, but the front desk person insisted it was OK. After mentioning the problem again, it was replaced. Also, we asked for more hangers a couple times, but never got them. The room was a little small for the two beds - we had to use one of them to put our things since there was no other place.

Great base to explore stone town, beach a short walk and really close to restaurants, bars and cafes. Staff were really friendly and also let us leave our bags there after checkout time which was appreciated. Breakfast was good with a sea view on the roof terrace. Quite an old fashioned style hotel but that added to the charm and location for me.

Only negatives were no sheet on the bed, just a blanket and there were loads of cats noisily fighting all night, not much they can do about that really!

Very nice breakfast, loves the fruits and the view from the rooftop! Staff amazing, very friendly and very helpful. They help with trip bookings as well and give great info on local restaurants etc. which made a huge difference for us. The cleanliness and AC was awesome. Many nice furniture and a loving touch in entire hotel. Location nice - quiet but still central. We liked everything about this place!

Good location, quiet and walking distance to basically anywhere in old citt. Working ac and fan, satisfying breakfast. Small room but acceptable.

Old windows wouldnt get fully closed thus the ac couldnt cool the room down well. Staff could perhaps be a bit more polite.

Garden Lodge is within walking distance to everything in stonetown without the noice and busyness from the city center. The breakfast at the rooftop restaurant was very nice and the staff was friendly. It was nice that we could buy cheap cold water at the reception.

There were SO MANY mosquitos in our room! Even though we used mosquito repellent we still got bitten a lot especially during the night because there were so many holes in the net over the bed. It was by far the worst place we stayed mosquito-wise in zanzibar. We stayed at Garden Lodge for 4 nights and our room was not cleaned once during. It would have been nice to have our sheets changed and the floor swept maybe just one time during our stay. Also we ran out of toiletpaper a couple of times during our stay and we had to go to the reception to ask for more - it wasn't a problem for us, but others might find it embarrasing.

Well maintained character filled traditional style hotel, with good facilities. Staff are great, cannot be faulted. Best value I've found in Tanzania.

What didn't I like? Leaving

The location was good. It was a stone throw away from the Stone town market and very easy to walk around the main attractions in Stone town to explore.

There is no improvements to suggest. The staff were lovely and friendly, and breakfast was worthwhile.
