We stayed in the annex, B & B. It is really not far from the main building, regardless of what some have written in their recent reviews. It's literally like 100 meters and takes a minute to walk. Our room was large, nice, clean and fresh. The staff who guarded the entrance all night long were always very nice and helpful. Our balcony faced the backyard which was cozy and picturesque. As a guest, you have access to the entire Tembo hotel with two pools and a unique and beautiful environment right by the beach. It is very affordable to live in the B & B, so much cheaper than the main building, but you still get to use everything. Nice! The breakfast was ok. We didn't eat anything else at the hotel. The location is fantastic, right on the beach. We do recommend Tembo B & B to anyone who wants an affordable accommodation but still want to have access to some luxury :-)
We did NOT like that there was not any mosquito net. This was the only place that did not have that (we stayed in several hotels on the island). And it also resulted in a lots of mosquito bites :-( Not ok for a hotel like this. Not even the cheap ones lack mosquito nets. So why tembo B & B?!

The staff is committed to their guests. My AC did not work my first night and the hotel was full so I was unsure how the situation would be resolved. The hotel replaced my AC. The staff will also help you with transportation and with tours. The breakfast is excellent. You can sit at a table looking over the beach. The hotel beach adjoins a public beach. The hotel has employees who ensure that hotel guests are not disturbed by ball games on the public beach. The cleaning ladies are friendly and thorough. The Apartments are a couple of blocks from the hotel which gives you the opportunity to engage with some of the locals. The route is well-lit so I felt safe. I bonded with the Simba Cat Rescue folks and talked to the cats daily and purchased food for them. The location is quieter than the main hotel. The staff will help you with luggage and have an area to store it if your departure is after check out. My room had a balcony looking out the back with a distant view of the courtyard.
The Apartments are no longer apartments, but rooms. There is a studio apartment on the top floor. Only 2 rooms overlook the courtyard which does not belong to the hotel. There are no mosquito nets in the rooms, but the staff does spray. However, I did get bitten. The hotel has a couple other properties that are not on Booking.com which I would have liked to have known about. The hotel does not serve alcohol out of respect for their Moslem employees. If wine with your dinner is important to you there are options elsewhere. Not disclosed on Booking.com is the fact that the government charges $5 a day for infrastructure. I have no problem with this fee as the need is obvious. I include these comments as information, they are not complaints. The listing on Booking.com needs to be updated.

The apartments were in the middle of the city. Best part, air-conditioning which is working. Very had to find in Africa. Very close to the main building. It is only a view corners away. You can use the pool during the day. Beds are very comfortable. We were only there for one night, but we liked it a lot. Our room was on the 3rd floor, but the bell boy carried our luggage all the way up.
The following two points I did not like: We got told that there is a room where we can change, if our flight is very late. The room is a restroom and it is mostly occupied. It took a while in order to get it. I did not change at all at the end. Our flight out was very late, so we pre-ordered our dinner. This way we did wanted to not rush our dinner. When we sat down it took forever till our dinner came. We had to ask twice. We almost had to gulp down our food, otherwise we would have left too late.

Good value for money accom, a 2 minute walk from the waterfront in Stone Town. The rooms are basic but a good size and comfy, they even have a small balcony. You are separate from the main hotel but it is a very short walk away, and the staff there are efficient and friendly. Nice breakfast in the mornings. The hotel can help you organise tours but it is very easy to organise these yourself; I did my own bookings online and via WhatsApp. Recommend wandering through Stone Town (guide not needed in my opinion), and checking out the fantastic night food market at the nearby Gardens. Overall this is good, no frills accom at an excellent price.

This is one of the properties of Tembo. The buildings are close to each other, but they are separated by streets, with the reception and restaurant for breakfast located across the street at the Tembo Hotel. The property is clean and spacious, with amenities like a safe and mini-fridge. Towels and water are provided. I particularly liked the design of the windows and the wooden furniture, which give the place a nice atmosphere and a sense of history. Tembo Hotel has a beach, but it's not ideal for swimming since there are many boats around, and the water isn't as clear as in the north of Zanzibar. However, you can still relax on the sunbeds and enjoy the atmosphere. Tourist attractions: The property is very convenient for exploring local attractions. From the Tembo Hotel beach, you can take a boat to Prison Island to see the giant and ancient turtles. The Freddie Mercury House, where he was born, is just a minute’s walk away. Right around the corner, you can wander down narrow streets lined with souvenir shops. Jump from one street to another, and take the time to admire the wooden doors and spot the differences between Indian and Arabic architectural styles. When you reach the Jaw Corner, head to the rooftop bar for a break and enjoy a drink. Afterward, you can continue walking until you reach the Fortress. There isn’t much to see there now, as it’s mostly a market. Along the embankment, you’ll also see young locals jumping into the water. For going out: The property is alcohol-free, but if you head in the opposite direction from the Freddie Mercury House, you'll find several nice options for drinks at rooftop bars and places with verandas offering beautiful sea views. I would definitely recommend this place for a stay. It's very convenient for exploring Stone Town and also perfect for some relaxation. Let me know if you'd like to add or adjust anything!

The Studio exceeded our expectations. It is not in the main hotel but in an annexe building but you have access to all the facilities within the main hotel. There is room service and laundry service with a staff member posted at a desk on the ground floor of the building for anything you might need. The location and features are great, and we loved that we were 'completely separate' from everyone else. The Studio is on the top floor, which gives you all the privacy you need. There is a lovely little rooftop lookout which we really enjoyed in the morning. Just be aware of the fact that you need to go up a few flights of stairs to get to the Studio. The staff were great too, as they helped with arranging excursions and rental cars. The breakfast was great too, and an effort was made to accommodate vegan meal options.

Both the Tembo B & B and the Tembo Hotel have great and attentive staff! The apartments are a very convenient place to use a launching pad to bigger adventures. Staying at the B & B allows guests to enjoy the facilities at the nearby, larger Tembo House Hotel. Those include an extensive breakfast buffet, multiple pools, and the restaurant itself, which opens directly onto to Shangani Public Beach, which wonderful views of the boats, sunsets, and daily slice of life. Decent wifi connection as well. The apartments are quiet and a little removed from all the activity from the hotel (which may appeal to some), while remaining a less than two minute walk to the main hotel. Guests do have to walk down a short alleyway to get to the apartments but to me it felt like a pretty safe and well-used passageway-- Tembo staff do keep someone posted at a desk by the front door to the apartment building as well. Great A/C and ceiling fans provide great air circulation without the dampness that is an unfortunate side effect in these sorts of older buildings in these hotter climates. Would recommend to anyone who wants to experience a nice stay in Stonetown for a few days!

First of all; the location couldn't be better. The hotel is next to the sea and in the heart of old own. We stayed in the side building for two nights and in the main building for one night. Both rooms were super nice. The room in the side building was actually huge! We were a bit worried about the distance from the main hotel but it was just a 1-2 minutes walk away. Both rooms had a very spacious and well maintained bathrooms and super cosy beds. The staff is super super helpful and friendly. Breakfast had a large variety of choices. The hotel has a lovely pool at the rooftop. We just learned about it on our last day... :) We had an evening flight and it was a huge plus that they have a shower and changing room (they provide towels as well) so that you can freshen up before you leave.
The downside of the hotel is the restaurant. On the breakfast you often have to wait for the plates, utensils, cups and glasses. The queues to get an omelet can also grow long. We also made a mistake of ordering a lunch in the restaurant (tuna steak and a pizza) and everything was totally tasteless. My tuna didn't even have the sauce mentioned in the menu (ordered on room service so didn't bother to call again and complain) and had saltfree chips and overcooked spiceless veggies aside. My companion's sea food pizza looked and tasted like some heated ready-made frozen pizza. Yack. They don't serve any alcohol in the hotel so no chilled beer either. Do not eat in the restaurant, it's a waste of money.

The staff was very friendly. They made the stay enjoyable. It was in a great location. Very easy to get taxis. The breakfast was very good.
Our room was on the fourth floor. Going up and down 52 stairs wasn't fun but we counted it as exercise. The beds were firmer than my spouse liked so she didn't sleep very well. There is construction going on so it was a bit noisy at times. Unfortunately, we weren't able to enjoy the upper pool but they made the pool at Tembo Palace available.
