The manager, Ben, replied to my question messaged before my stay and followed through upon my arrival. He was welcoming and friendly, and is a great ambassador for the brand.
I enquired at the dining room on Sunday lunchtime about eating there. It was empty but they had to check if it was possible to sit there & when, because it's closed between 3 & 5pm. I made a reservation, even though I was staying overnight & didn't know what time I'd be hungry enough to eat. The bar was busy when I went back down later & I was invited to sit there. I requested a table in the dining room instead because it was still empty and more peaceful. The reluctance at permitting guests to eat in the dining room was discouraging & although the staff members at the welcome desk were polite, it appeared that they preferred to keep the dining room empty for hours whilst referring customers to the bar instead (for the same menu). Or maybe it's company policy they were following.

The breakfasts were exceptional and delicious. The room was clean and comfortable. It was convenient to go downstairs for dinner. The hotel was in a great position close to everything I needed in a very pretty town.
The room they allocated to me overlooked the car park. People parking their cars could look straight in and there were only thick curtains to prevent their view. This meant the room was dark and gloomy when I was getting dressed in the morning and I could not sleep with the curtains open. Headlights from the car park also shone right into the room. In addition the smokers/vapers went outside to smoke just under my window and the smell filtered in even with the window closed. If you ever go to this hotel make sure you don't get this room.

The breakfast selection was good. Cooked breakfasts done well. Good to have decaff breakfast tea available. Room quirky owing to age of property! Comfy bed, good bathroom and a fan available. It was very hot when I stayed so the fan helped me sleep. The location in the High Street was excellent for me. Parking included was great as I didn't need to use the car for 5 days. The staff were very friendly and I felt safe staying there on my own
The stairs were a bit dirty. I wished I'd asked for help with my luggage. The stairs are wonky owing to age of property and I am 70+ & could be fitter😔

The location and ambience are wonderful, the room was lovely, well-equipped and clean, but as we know, it's the people that make a place! And my friend and I were so, so impressed with the outstanding team here! We were warmly, genuinely welcomed by the wonderful, gracious, and high-level professional, Ben, for whom nothing was too much trouble. He made us feel instantly relaxed and 'at home.' Thank you, Ben. The restaurant staff were high-level, too, in their service and assistance, especially concerning food intolerances. And they too, extended the sense of welcome, with their genuine, 'nothing is too much trouble' approach. We each enjoyed our meal, and felt beautifully relaxed as we chatted over our coffees. Then, after a good night's sleep, we were served our breakfast by delightful Daisy. The breakfast menu was impressive, and yet again, we felt nurtured and relaxed. Then, on checking out, the wonderful, uplifting experience, provided by the Castle and Ball's impressive, excellent team, continued with the brilliant Claire, whose warmth, caring, gentle, infectious humour and all-round professionalism had us leave this hotel with a spring in our step and a smile on our faces and in our hearts. Thank you, everyone. We're filled with gratitude. We'll be back, of course!

THE ROOM WAS SPACIOUS AND VERY PLEASANT WITH PLENTY OF ROOM TO MOVE AROUND. THERE WAS A CHARMING FOUR-POSTER BED AND THERE WAS ACCESS TO A LITTLE BALCONY AREA. AS THE BUILDING WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1745, THERE WERE A LOT OF UNEVEN FLOORS AND CREAKING FLOORBOARDS, WHICH IS TO BE EXPECTED. THE LOCATION WAS EXCELLENT AS WE WERE ATTENDING A WEDDING AT MARLBOROUGH TOWN HALL, WHICH IS ONLY A FEW MINUTES WALK AWAY. BREAKFAST WAS EXCELLENT AND THE STAFF WERE DELIGHTFUL. THERE IS PARKING AT THE REAR WITH A COUPLE OF DISABLED BAYS.
THE ROOM NEEDS A DEEP CLEAN AROUND THE EDGES OF THE CARPET AND THE DESK CHAIR SEAT IS FULL OF DUST. I PATTED THE SEAT TO DUST OFF WHAT LOOKED LIKE TALC AND CLOUDS OF DUST CAME UP! I NEEDED TO MOVE THE BEDSIDE CABINET, AS I HAD DROPPED SOMETHING, AND IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT THE HOOVER HADN'T SEEN THAT AREA FOR A WHILE. THE WINDOWS WERE SMEARED, BUT I REALISE THAT THIS IS ONLY REALLY OBVIOUS WHEN STRONG SUNLIGHT SHINES THROUGH. I REALLY DO FEEL AWFUL POINTING THESE THINGS OUT, WHICH ARE ONLY MINOR AND DID NOT SPOIL OUR STAY. IT JUST NEEDS ATTENTION TO DETAIL.

The hotel is located in the dead centre of Marlborough's central square/lane. The food we enjoyed was clearly above average of our trip through England, so I'd recommend eating in, also for breakfast. The place is nice as the hotel and restaurant merge very organically on the groundfloor, it all feels very welcoming.
We were travelling as a family with two adults and two "kids" of 17 and 15 years. In all other locations, it was not an issue to put the kids into one room and let the adults have the other one, but here, we were asked to split up to guard the kids (at all times). No major problem, though. The rooms felt in need for some maintenance, particularly the bathrooms.

Great location in the centre of Marlborough. The rooms were quiet and the beds very comfortable. Breakfast was excellent.
It would have been good to have a covered area to store our bikes or, even better, secure bike storage area. They could do with having a good clean behind the radiators now and again - we dropped something and when we retrieved it we liberated a ton of dust! Also worth warning people with restricted mobility that the stairs could be a little tricky for them. Final thing - it is WAY too early to have Christmas decorations up!! Minor points though.

We are regular visitors to this Inn. The staff, as always, were friendly, helpful and polite. The room was delightful if very hot but the weather is not under the control of the hotel!! The meal was tasty and the service was great. We shall be visiting again!
It was exceptionally hot and the wasps were out in force! However, as the tables out in front were not wiped regularly nor were glasses collected promptly, the wasps thought that this was an 'all you can eat buffet' and were thoroughly irritating. Indeed, we could not sit in our usual spot to 'people watch'. We moved inside and sat by the window, the sills were a wasp graveyard with several insects expiring. Improved house keeping would have helped to reduce the wasp threat!! In addition, when inside tables were wiped down, the waiter did not move the menus etc, just wiped up to them leaving a collection of detritus that attracted wasps and flies.

Location. Friendliness of staff. Bed. Price. Cleanliness of room. Plenty of sockets.
The creaky floor boards upstairs. I went to bed early as I had an early ride and was woke constantly when people moved about upstairs. I appreciated there is northing you can do about this but it is a niggle, espec when I was confidently told I had was given the quietest room. There was no bike rack, told to lock to a black rail near rhe back door - which was fine until someone parked their car perilously close to my bike. A bike rack would be a welcome addition. These two are just shared in the spirit of "constructive feedback" - they didn't spoil my stay.

Castle and Ball was a great place to stay right in the centre of Marlborough - my first visit. Having a car park was great - the room was great - the wifi was uncomplicated for once! The staff were friendly, the location was fantastic. Breakfast was included but I didn't get up in time so I can't rate it but I bet it was good! When I got up the market out the front was in full swing - 3 punnets of strawberries for £2 !!!
It's a very old building so the floors are all a bit spongy and creaky and you can hear all the movement from floors above. But the noise didn't go on late or disturb me - it just took a bit of getting used to!
