Hale Kawehi is a unique opportunity to stay in a true local setting with exceptional authentic adornments in a quiet residential neighborhood. Located just a few minutes from town and easy access to regional activities. Many nice sitting sites inside and out depending on mood/interest. Great night time light accenting on timers. Host has good upkeep of home and very easy to work with being attentive if contacted but otherwise leaves guests to themselves. Vary nice local feel with strong Aloha Spirit.

It seems obvious the host is passionate about collecting true regional artifacts, many of museum quality. Very interesting and fun to explore but can make spaces seem a little cluttered if unaccustomed to such. This is the host's main living space, so understand and this is not a complaint, just observation. Good for guests to know going in that care is appropriate.

Overall, a beautiful guest house (which seems to be the front half of a house - with the back half occupied by the owner), with a lush garden and beautiful front patio that was perfect for taking a lazy breakfast in the sunshine. The house just a 5 minutes drive from downtown Hilo (and about 30 minutes walk). The owner of the house was very friendly and came to introduce herself and to let us know that Hilo celebrates NYE with fairly unique fireworks displays ;) The kitchen was very well equipped so we could make full meals for ourselves during our stay. There were also lots of little complementary drinks (water and sodas) and food items (including muffins!) which made it feel quite welcoming. There were also lots of towels for bath and beach use! The decor was very personal and comfortable and they had an amazing selection of books.

A bit more attention could be given to cleaning the shelves in the kitchen where plates are stored. (lots of dust accumulation)

We loved our stay at Hale Kawehi Guesthouse! The house is spacious and we had everything we needed- breakfast and snacks foods were even provided. There are lots of lovely seating areas, inside and outside. The house gets great air flow, as some of the only doors are fly screen doors. The quirky vibe is lots of fun! The facilities and full kitchen were great. Thank you for having us stay!

Nothing we didn't like, just some things to be aware of. The bed is very soft - great for people who love a soft bed!

Hale Kawehi was a real delight - not just a regular 1BR apartment, but effectively a furnished whole house - including two sitting rooms and wrap-around balcony. It was a great base for our four days of sightseeing on the Big Island, and lacks nothing for comfort. Well furnished throughout, the kitchen was the best stocked we have ever encountered. Would definitely stay at Hale Kawehi again.

No complaints whatsoever.

This was the most home like guest house I have stayed at. It felt like your grandmother's house blended with the local Hawai'ian theme. It has 2 out door and 3 indoor social areas in addition to the bedroom and bathroom. It was perfect for me and my girlfriend to vacation in.

Small snacks provided on arrival made us feel welcome. Very spacious - part of a house so included 2 living areas and a well-equipped kitchen with dining room; also access to a front courtyard with seating as well as a sitting area on a side verandah!

We had a very pleasant stay in this beautiful house. Such fantastic decor. All sorts of things available in the kitchen. Snacks waiting for us at arrival. Loved it.

We loved it! It felt very shabby chic..our favorite was the sitting areas inside n outside. Every area was comfortable, attractive n very inviting..security was awesome no worries, location was perfect for our conference..no problem s..lots of amenities. Good choice on my part!! Would love to come back!

No rice spoon, missed meeting our host

Kawehi (pronounced Ka-vay-hee) provides to her guests the entire front portion of her well-located home in Hilo. It is amazing the amount of room, both inside and out, that you have access to compared to a normal hotel room. It includes a full kitchen, stocked with various complementary goodies, and an outdoor covered dining area, plus plenty of places just to lounge around in. And covered parking is included, which is a great feature in rainy Hilo. We enjoyed our stay very much.

The coqui frogs are LOUD at night, but thankfully Kawehi provides ear plugs, which helps a lot. After awhile, you get used to their co-KEE song, which is strongest during the first part of the night.

Quirky and delightful oasis in Hilo. Friendly and available hostess. Well supplied with snacks and breakfast items. Great comfortable decks for reading and dining.

If walk to beach access is important this is not available. Lots of interesting knickknacks in the guesthouse so probably not suitable for small children
