This is the perfect example where triumph of customer service, and of personal human decency by staff, compensates for any perceived deficiencies in a property. This is a budget property. If you have illusions of snooty, uniformed bellhops, snarky concierges behind marbled desks, and enormous lobbies with Tiffany stained glass domes . . . . your nose may turn up and your heart may sink, because this place is a solidly built motel for regular folks. If you're a snob, chase the Ritz-Carlton, not far away. Two things make this place special: Location and, above all, its staff. A block away is PSU. It sits right on a streetcar line that will take you anywhere. The property has free parking (but it is in short supply, best call and ask). 15 minutes of pleasant walking takes you anywhere in the downtown district and a bit further goes to the Pearl and adjacent districts. There are superb food trucks a block or so away (Portland helped popularize food truck culture a few years back). But the staff make this place. I am tempted to say I have never seen such kindness and supportive attitude in an accommodation before. So totally above and beyond the call, it was amazing. During my stay at the hotel, I needed assistance a number of times, and Nicky, Nicole and others jumped at the chance to help me and my partner when we were in need. We were just amazed! Just for this reason alone, I would give this property 100 stars if I could. I could not possibly recommend more highly.

What a perfect location!! Close to public transportation, a block away from CVS, a swanky pizzeria on the bottom floor of the hotel...amazing!! Parking was a little tight but I'm also in a truck. So many cameras in the parking garage I felt safe leaving my truck there overnight. There's also street parking right out front if you can grab a spot. The entire building and my room had that old school, old timey, hasn't changed much since the beginning charm to it. Old, simple, nice. The staff was AMAZING! Very friendly and helpful team.

There was no elevator that I saw. Only stairs. I also didn't ask so I guess I could've been there. There was plastic around some things like they had just painted and forgot to take it down. No biggie but it stuck out. Nothing is updated- I really didn't mind. I like the old feel of things. One of the 3 pillows provided was lumpy as hell.

Front desk staff went way above and beyond to make sure I was comfortably settled in. She even helped me carry my luggage up the stairs! Great complimentary toiletries in bathroom.

Bed was a little too firm, not enough water pressure in shower. Shower wasn't hot enough.

This one star hotel has a very large mini fridge (about 30 inches tall) and a microwave. My current hotel, a Marriot, only has a microwave in the lobby and the mini fridge is half the size in my room. I thought the bed was comfortable, the heater worked well, the water in my room, 46, got hot enough ( some reviews I read said the water was tepid). This hotel has a washer & dryer that guests can use for $1.25 each. Staff was very nice, my train got in 4 hours late and I was worried I would miss my first night, I got help with the best way to get to the hotel and when I arrived she helped carry my bags up the stairs. I was also allowed to check out a little bit late, so I could eat my lunch and have less time between checking out here and checking into my new hotel. I cancelled my booking at the hostel deciding that a shared room and bathroom were not for me after a stay in a hostel in another city. I think this hotel is a much better value than a shared room. If you are looking for a budget hotel this place is worth considering.

People sensitive to noise might find the tri-rail and road noise too loud. That didn't bother me. The carpet is dated and there was a ripple, but my feet didn't get dirty walking on it that first night ( I was too tired to get out my slippers that first night). They don't have coffee in the lobby or the rooms at this time, though they did before covid and they are thinking of bringing coffee back.

We really enjoyed our stay. It's in a great location to explore downtown Portland. The staff were outstanding - so helpful, very happy to give us tips about public transport, good places to visit and did whatever they could to make our stay comfortable. We had a car to park and they went to lengths to help us do that. The room was very comfortable and clean. It is an old style motel and had a few signs of age, but it had everything that we needed. I was travelling with my son and his partner and we were all treated wtih great respect. Thanks for a great stay.

Great location of course, but above all, excellent customer service. Nothing was too much trouble, no question too silly. Staff were informed, funny, polite & accommodating when I was traveling to and intimidated by a strange city. Honestly haven't had better in a five star hotel - I have stayed in a few. Very clean & the replacing of the little soaps every day was also super appreciated. Thanks Nileshwar and other 2 guys on reception!! From start on the phone to check out and travel qs, you all were awesome.

Bring ear plugs for the tram -- runs just outside, you can hear & feel it. The facility is being renovated right now, needs it badly, so leave behind any expectations - that said, it is clean and staff are very receptive to fixing anything you need.

The staff was amazing. They all went the extra mile every time we asked something, even small things, to make our stay better. Our room was clean and had all the necessities. The location is great since it’s close to downtown, has a few grocery stores close by, is close to many different bus / train stations, and right next to the university.

The whole complex was pretty old and there weren’t many utilities available outside of your room - common area, water fountain, etc.

The hotel's name undersells the accommodation. Whilst it's excellent value for money, it's not the bargain basement establishment the name suggests. It's close to several tram (streetcar) stops in the university district. The homelessness visible in other parts of the city is less noticeable around the hotel. My room was huge with a view onto a quiet, attractive street.

The only minor gripe is that the nearby tram stops result in some noise, although it didn't affect my sleep.

The staff were one of the highlights of our stay. So pleasant, friendly, exceptionally willing to help. The location was fantastic, very close to public transportation.

Smell of smoke in the hallway, stains on the carpet, and worn furniture. Evidently, one of the guests at this non-smoking hotel decided to smoke and the hallway was reeking, as well as the smoke drifting through the closed door into our room.

The location of the hotel is absolutely fantastic—close to everything you could want to see and do. It made exploring the area so convenient. For the price, it’s an excellent value; you get great amenities and comfort without breaking the bank. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a budget-friendly stay in a prime location!

The hotel itself was comfortable, and the location was great for exploring the city. However, one thing to note is the visible presence of homelessness around the area, including near some of the city’s beautiful spots like the water features. It’s a reminder of the city’s broader challenges, which might impact the overall experience for some visitors. Despite this, the hotel offered good service and amenities.
