Stated in the double room with private bathroom. As a family this was perfect. The room was comfortable, had it's own mini fridge and the bathroom was clean and well maintained. Whilst the private rooms are not in the main building (and old prison) you can walk around the rest and you can it was a prison. Also enjoyed reading the information up around the hostel, making it like a mini museum. The common areas were great and the staff helpful and cheerful. Location is also really good, next to the markets and the Fremantle Oval, which is nice for a WAFL game if it's the right time of year. Restaurants, bars and coffee shops etc all also very close by. Highly recommend.

Affordable price for the room with ensuite for 4 people. Good location, close to the main street with all cafes and restaurants. On Sunday for breakfast you can get free pancakes, it was a pleasant addition to our stay.
No free or at least discounted car park for YHA guests. You have to pay from 8am until 12am and after from midnight until 8am it’s free and from 8am you have to start paying again so it is very inconvenient, you have to come back to pay and put ticket in your car or use app (maybe it will make it easier) but not everyone wants to download and figure out how to use the app for only 1-2 nights stay, and also parking is expensive because you pay hourly $2.80

We stayed 4 nights at YHA as a family with two kids (9&6yo) in a family room. The room is basic, clean and covers everything you need. We loved staying at the hostel because it gave us so much freedom. The vibe in the hostel is very relaxed. The kids loved to wander around and discover everything the hostel had to offer: board games, crafts, an outside area where they could play chess or just practice cartwheels, the book corner, information signs about the prison’s history etc. The kitchen is huge and there’s lots of fridges and shelves to put your things away. Staff is friendly and super helpful with any inquiries. Location is convenient, very close to Fremantle centre and all other must see/do’s around. I would highly recommend to stay here!
I guess it’s not something that YHA controls but the parking fees around were quite high. There’s an option for free parking (thanks to the staff of YHA to direct us there!) but it’s a bit far away if you then have to walk back to YHA. Consider public transport / Uber if you’re not using your car all the time over renting a car

very interesting stay at an old prison, you could choose to stay at a room that was an actual prison cell previously but note that those rooms would require sharing bathrooms. our room was part of the newer rooms with ensuite bathroom and hence were not the actual prison cells really glad to have been there on a Sunday as that pancake sunday! once a week where there is complimentary free pancakes, thanks to the staff for your patience and time! we also really enjoyed the true crime prison tour, many thanks to the staff (was Nathan i believe) who brought us around, he was so engaging and had so many interesting stories, definitely give it a try if you are interesting in creepy stories of the history of the prison's inmates! we went for the last time slot at the day at 445pm and when the tour ended the sun had set and gave 1000% eerie creepy vibes haha we would have definitely joined all of the other tours if time permitted :-)
would have been amazing if we had a kettle or some mineral water within the room

It has more than one common/share place to chill so you can choose if you want to be in a more chill space or somewhere to socializa with others. Great kitchen and really clean. Ping pong table, a place to fill your bottle with fresh cool water. More than one bathroom and showers. A little more expensive than other hostels but its worth it, very confortable. Great place overall
They don't let you stay more than 2 weeks and you need to wait a month to stay there again, even if it is for just one more night

I really enjoyed my stay at the hostel. Having slept in almost every room, I recommend the comfort of the four-person room with ensuite bathroom—unbeatable. Andy helped me with a problem with my lock and was the kindest and most attentive person there, making my stay unbeatable. Both the manager and Blair and Nacho were very friendly too and always willing to help. The atmosphere is very sociable, the cleanliness is perfect, and the facilities have everything you need and more. I 100% recommend it! The best hostel in the area.

Comfy beds, and nice that each had its own bedside lamp and locker. Clean and spacious kitchen, lots of fridges and amenities in the kitchen. Obviously perfect location for doing the Fremantle prison tours which were really good too!!
Biggest issue is that there was only 1 shower and 1 toilet for a big number of rooms (some which were 6 beds, some 8 beds). If you wanted more toilets you had to walk to the kitchen and use those ones (where there were 2 more toilets and 4 showers). Really slow and temperamental WiFi in the room. Also no ovens in the kitchen. Minor things though, I would definitely stay again!

Location was great, the facilities were cleanly. I stayed in a private room. It was modest, had the essentials, and was basic and very clean. I loved the aircon, and the mattresses were surprisingly comfy. I loved the decor in the halls, including the graphics of prisoners escapes, etc. the staff were super friendly, and the guests were friendly too!
In the private rooms, the shower curtains were super frustrating to deal with and they didn’t stop water from going everywhere, as well as only having the option of overhead rain-shower heads. Also the lights in the bathroom being on a timer. There was many many many times it would go out whilst sitting or standing still, and even when in the shower if the shower curtain was drawn. That was the biggest pain point, however after a couple nights I got good at strategically timing a quick arm wave to trigger the sensor to stay on. The rooms could use more power plugs, as I travel with a sleep apnea machine, I had to sacrifice space for my other electronics and my partners devices on the other side of the bed. This could be solved with extra power boards in the private rooms.

I liked the experience of staying in an old prison cell. Be aware that although two original cells were merged into one room it still felt small. But I liked it a lot. The room was very quiet, probably because of the thick walls. One night though was very hot and the fan could not cool enough. But other than that it was really comfortable. It was clean, had a kitchen (which I never used), a nice yard to relax and a common room with aircon to cool down on a hot day. Reception staff was very welcoming and helpful. Your are in a part of the Fremantle Prison so if you want to visit the prison, it is just a few steps to the entrance. Other than that, it is about 5 minutes to the center and 15 min to the station. I would rate the location as very good.

Convenient location
I had paid and had receipts on my ph for my accomm thru Booking. Com and as I live locally I didn't think about photo ID and I had to sit in the office for 1.5 hrs before I could get hold of family to send a photo of my license. I had my Gov issued Senior's Card with me but that apparently will not suffice. I also had people come into the office who knew me who were travelling on the same group as me but this also wouldn't suffice. NOT friendly.
