The rooms were very unique and authentic, with enough space for our family of 5. There is an elevator, but stairs are necessary to get to the hotel. Parking is about 600m away, and we appreciate the hotel’s recommendation for the nearest garage. If you have a lot of bags, I recommend you arrange with the hotel to pick them up near the garage and transport them for you, otherwise you will be walking many stairs with your luggage. At the time of our visit, the pool was closed for repairs. The staff made us aware of this before we arrived, but we did not realise that this impacted the hot water elsewhere in the spa - we appreciate that the hotel refunded us the entry fee when we decided not to stay. I hope once the spa is repaired other guests can enjoy it, had it been functional I’m sure it would have been very nice, although €25 per person to access the pool seems expensive to me. Overall we had a great stay and enjoyed exploring and staying in Matera, I would recommend this hotel to others.

The hotel is in a perfect central location, just a short walk from all the main sights in Matera. Our room was spacious, very clean, and comfortable—plenty of space to relax after exploring the city. One of the highlights was the spa, which was well-maintained and a great place to unwind. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a comfortable and well-located stay in Matera.
I had requested a bottle of Prosecco to be prepared for my cousin’s birthday, but unfortunately, this was not arranged. We also booked massages after our spa visit, but were not informed in advance that we would need to wait an hour and a half. At breakfast, there were boiled eggs available earlier, but by the time we arrived—around 9:00 AM—they had run out. When I asked if more could be brought out, I was told they were finished for the day, which was disappointing given how early it still was.

The hotel has a fantastic location right in the heart of Matera, just a short walk from historic sites and great restaurants. Our room was spacious and beautifully decorated, and breakfast was excellent, with plenty of variety, including vegetarian options. It was also really convenient to have luggage storage, allowing us to explore the city before check-in.
Our experience didn’t quite live up to expectations, especially given that this was the most expensive hotel we booked during our trip to Puglia. - Our room was in a separate building, right next to the entrance door, which was very old. Every time someone entered or left, the door slammed shut loudly, disturbing us throughout the night and early morning. - The room faced the hotel’s parking area, where staff were moving transport vehicles from the early hours and even honking at 5:30 AM. - After booking, we were informed that the Therme bath required an additional €25 per person and had to be reserved in advance—something we hadn’t expected. - Our AC wasn’t working, and the room was quite cold. A staff member came to fix it, and it eventually started working later in the evening.

The breakfast was amazing, with a wide variety of options and live harp music, staff at breakfast room were very friendly. The room was very comfortable and clean, uniquely located inside a stone cave. Since we were traveling with children, we couldn't experience the spa, which is only open to those 18 and older. If you're driving, the hotel suggests parking outside the old town for 20 euros per day. If you have more than just a backpack, I recommend calling the hotel for a shuttle. Although it's only 300 meters walk to the hotel, there are many stairs, and combined with the hot weather we experienced, it can be quite challenging, haha.
The front desk staff seemed quite reserved. Perhaps they were simply busy with the high volume of guests, but we didn't feel particularly welcomed.

Matera is one of those magical places, it has gone from being the “shame of Italy” to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to one of the 2019 European Capitals of Culture. The city is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in history. It has been the filming location for many movies. The ancient architecture, the cave dwellings, the views at every turn, with that less touristy feel, made it one of my absolute favorite site of my 3 weeks in Italy... I had that smile the entire day! There are a lot of stairs, hillside cliffs, to walk up and down, Matera provenant itself challenging, and to beat the heat, the early morning, and late night discoveries happened. I stayed in this famous cave hotel, including the vistas and the underground Roman baths... one day was not sufficient! Arrivederci Matera !

Extraordinary city. We took a junior suite, located inside the cave. La tulpa restaurant near hotel reception was very nice.
Took us an hour to find the hotel. Google was helpless. It is a real quest. When we finally did it ( with two bags), another customer was there who couldn't even park. She left her husband in the car and walked 1 km in order to ask for hotel help. When we reached a re eption and checked in, our room was 350 meters far away. The hotel driver took us to the room but didn't touch our bags. After an hour on the sun, we continued carrying the bags and climbing the numerous stairs. Spa is nice, but an additional charge

Everything! I think all of the rooms are accessed through the terrace so there is a table and chair out front with the most amazing view of matera . The spa was even better than the pictures , you go through that room shown above and there’s two little circle areas with seating in the last. The rooms were really nicely decorated and clean and pretty spacious for Italy. Breakfast was a lovely spread that i wish I had more appetite for!
Nothing! Getting there was a journey with the old roads and being so confusing but that’s just what you get for being in an old city in Italy and an overpacked , they do have services that will bring your bags to your room though , didn’t do it but I would recommend that for anyone .

The hotel is situated in the centre of the Sassi so it is in a fabulous location. The rooms are carved out of the cave - the only downside is they are a little dark as being a cave the only windows are at the door but the wonderful ambience makes up for this and there are seats outside the room to sit in the sunshine. The spa is also fabulous and we had a relaxing massage as well. The breakfast is superb.
There were no coffee making afcilities in the room and although you could order at the small bar we felt coffee in the room would have been a good addition. Also it was expensive to use the spa and again it would be good to be able to pop into the spa for a quick swim which is not worth doing dure to the cost - you have to spend a bit of time there to make it worth it.

I LOVED the location of the sophistication of this hotel with the noted bonus of access to thermal pools and spa to take a much needed rest after a hot day and/or walking around town, cave hike, or visiting all the sites! A 2-night stay was the perfect amount of time for those who are trying to see a ton of regions, but if you have time to embrace the dolce far niente of Italy, 3-nights would provide the slower pace to the Italian life. The property boasted 180 degree views of the sassi lit up at night or the orange glow in the morning. The higher the room location, the more landscape you can see, but you can easily walk up to the other levels to gain other perspectives should you have a room on the first or second level. They have an elevator, but it was fun to walk the outside perimeter stairs for different perspectives. It was also an easy walk into the main part of town (take a right when you head out of the hotel for a shorter stair walk), but I would only suggest to stay in the sassi if you are will and able bodied, and healthy to walk stairs as you will need to climb a lot of stairs as part of the adventure to get lost and get in and out of the sassi / hotel. Otherwise, there are plenty of accommodation options on the main street or perimeter where you can overlook the sassi as well. The hotel was well kept, the rooms had closed or open door options to let light in or keep dark and cool, great water pressure, cool AC, a shuttle service from their preferred parking lot they will advise, and helped with luggage for those of us who always unnecessarily overpack.
There wasn't anything I disliked about this property!
