Amazing view from the hotel and our room! I have felt that I've seen the best of Matera without leaving the hotel. Cave room we had was impressive and very unique. Good breakfast. The breakfast room is also in the cave, or you can have it on the terrace, which is lovely and has a great view of the city. Staff is very friendly and helpful, they helped us to organise an airport transfer from Bari airport and helped with the luggage because you can't reach the hotel by car. Amazing stay and I would definitely recommend it!

It's not a five-star hotel, so obviously some furniture in the room was a bit knackered, and different parts of the room required some renovation. But I think it's a great value for money and an amazing option if you want to stay in the cave hotel!

Location is excellent, we could see most of Sassi from our windows, simply a breathtaking view! Close to various points in Sassi, 10-15 minutes walking from main attractions. The room was small, but cozy and more than enough for a short stay. The room has good AC, so even the higher temperatures from outside should not cause any issues inside. Breakfast was good and varied, self-serving buffet with a variety of options. Staff was very welcoming and helpful, provided us directions and recommended us some good restaurants.

A bit hard to find just by following navigation apps, as the signal is not always the best there. Difficult to find parking nearby due to ZTL (Zone Traffic Limited) and we had to walk with our baggage from where we parked to the hotel.

Check-in was smooth and easy. The room was clean and tidy, with a comfortable bed and great air conditioning that kept us cool during the hot summer days. The hotel is in a great location with a beautiful view over Matera. Breakfast was tasty and enjoyable. Overall, a pleasant stay!

However, I’m not completely sure about the value for money. Also, before our arrival, I received suspicious external links via the Booking.com chat asking for my card details, even though I had already secured the reservation through Booking. When I contacted the hotel directly, they told me it was phishing and advised me to report it to Booking – which was honestly quite strange and concerning.

The hotel is in an excellent location to explore Matera and the balcony outside our room overlooked the Sasso Barisano and the views were terrific during the day and at night. The breeze was also cooling as it was hot during our stay. Staff throughout were pleasant but someone at reception should have let us know about the lift down to the base of the Sassi sooner. We walked the ravine the first evening and would have welcomed knowing on our return. Our room was basic but we had wanted to experience being in a cavelike room so embraced the experience.

Room could have been cleaner. Bedlinen and towels were very clean While shower was powerful the door was faulty and shower very small. The breakfast was limited in that we do not eat sweet things for breakfast but coffee and fresh fruit was good.

The location of the hotel is great - in the old part of the city, which of course is connected with the unavoidable inconvenience of the lack of parking and the need to carry the suitcases from a nearby piazza to the reception over a narrow cobblestone street and stairs. So if you are old, or weak, or have some disabilities, it may be very inconvenient. But other than that, I can only recommend this hotel. The breakfast is very good and very un-typical Italian (lots of different dishes available).

The access to the hotel is difficult, but it is not a negative aspect of the hotel, it is just a fact connected with the location.

The setting was perfect for feeling the atmosphere of Matera. Very comfortable room & good wifi access. Helpful staff getting my luggage in & out from San Giovanni Piazza. Once I had my stick, I was happier on the cobblestones & stairs. The Matera tour at 5:45 was good use of time on the arrival day. Variety at breakfast was good.

While supporting with my luggage was great, I was asked to go down & sign in at Reception....no handrail, I ended up crawling down backwards! However, next morning I discovered a handrail & stairs from breakfast cave to Reception....felt staff could have advised on using this & saved me that trauma. The young man did offer me a hand trying to climb back out of Reception though.

The hotel is in the city centre. I recommend that you pack your belongings in a backpack so you don't have to carry a suitcase. Everyone at the reception was very friendly, as well as at breakfast in the morning. The breakfast has lots of things salami, cheese, fruit, sweet, baked etc. The hotel is lovely, has a great view - our room had a terrace with a view. If you want a romantic, nice, hotel I recommend it. We left the car in the Nicoletti parking - you have to leave the keys in the car but everything was fine they are very friendly. Parking for 24 hours was 20€.

If you ever imagined a breakfast with the view, then this is definitely it!. Hotel Sassi offers an outstanding opportunity to watch over the magical Matera. With the great breakfast buffet and the view over the sassi, your stay will be stuck in the memories for sure.

The position of the hotel simply demands a light backpack. Even if you have a small cabin size luggage, you are not able to stroll it down the cobble stone street. It feels also wrong to do so because the streets are so beautiful that you feel history under your feet. Don't get me wrong - the position of the hotel is great, just do not have excessive luggage.

I loved everything about this place, from the location to the 24-hr receptio desk, the courteous, helpful and highly professional staff, the cosy old-fashioned decor in my room, the stunning panoramic view of the old city surmounted by the cathedral, the equally fabulous dining terrace and exposed stone dining room behind it, the lavish breakfast spread included in the very reasonable out-of-season price,, the wi-fi in every room, the heating, the firm comfortable bed, the cleverly compact bathroom with the great shower... But that's enough about me. Now YOU go experience it!

Staff really friendly and helpful. Our room was lovely, had a great view. Fridge which was handy. Good size bathroom. Towels changed daily along with bedding. Loved that there was a bar. Breakfast was the best we’ve ever had at a stay in Italy. ( good vegan options) would happily stay again.

Would have liked one extra pillow, probably could have asked. Would be nice to have a kettle or coffee machine in the room. Few ants in that wardrobe on the last day. But I’m being really picky, it was an amazing stay.
