We stayed two nights in Matera at Fra I Sassi. It was a fantastic hotel in a perfect location in the Sassi. The view from our room’s own terrace was absolutely breathtaking. The room was in a restored cave but modern, beautiful and spotless. The property was peaceful and secure. All the staff were lovely, and breakfast was super. We used the parking and transport service offered by the hotel and it was worth the extra cost. Matera is magical and so is this hotel!

Location of hotel is right in the centre of Sassi. Staff very friendly. The breakfast was amazing with a great selection of food, probably one of the best I have had in an Italian Hotel. Aperitivo in the evening came with so much stuzzuchini (nibbles served with your drink) that we had to push out our dinner booking by an hour :-). Highly recommend this hotel!

This place has it all. Stay in a cave but also have a window and a view. We stayed in room 11 which is one of the cave suites. We had our own terrace and amazing view. Staff couldn’t be nicer. So lovely. And the breakfast!!! Amazing !!! Perfect location to visit restaurants etc and walk to everything. Would stay again.

Our experience at Fra i Sassi was absolutely unforgettable. Our room was beautiful and full of character — the bathroom was set directly in the cave, which gave it such a unique and authentic touch. One of the highlights was definitely the view: right from our window we had a breathtaking panorama of Matera, perfect at any time of day. The location couldn’t have been better. We had no issues at all with our luggage, and the direct shuttle to the hotel made arrival super easy. Once there, we were within walking distance of everything — it’s perfectly situated to explore the Sassi and the historic center. What really made the difference was the staff. Every single person we interacted with was incredibly kind and helpful. They gave us excellent recommendations for food and activities, helped with reservations, and made us feel completely at home. A big plus for us: we were traveling with our dog and everything went smoothly. And breakfast? Just as amazing as everything else — fresh, local, and delicious. Highly recommend staying here if you want the full Matera experience with comfort, charm, and warm hospitality

Fra I Sassi is centrally located in Matera. The room was very spacious and it was an actual cave! The bed was very comfortable.

Just be aware that there are quite a few steps at this property and in Matera in general! The room was very dark as the only natural light came from the glass in the front door. That's to be expected in a cave but it became a little oppressive after 3 days

The welcome was especially good as we had had a long day and arrived late. The room was lovely and large and with a difference, as it was a cool cave. The breakfast was excellent, probably the best we had Italy. The location is superb with everything in Matera being in easy walking distance, so no problem popping back for a siesta. The view from the terrace outside of the reception or the upper terrace is a great view of the old town - the Sassi. Recommended parking was secure and worked well with the shuttle service to the hotel.

Nothing really. The car park and shuttle were a little expensive, but that does not reflect on Fra I Sassi Residence.

The location was perfect with an amazing view of Matera. Very comfortable rooms and I believe our room had the best view. I would book room no 14 again. Breakfast was quite generous and coffee was great! Also the shuttle service to and from the parking lot to the hotel was a very convenient offering. Not free but well-worth it.

The ice-cream and drinks offer from 5-7pm which was written on the board sounded like it was a complimentary welcome service and so we ordered only to find out later that it was not on the house and we were charged for it. It should be made clear that it was not a free offering.

It was absolutely amazing , all the facilities were excellent and the location was good in the heart of sassi within walking distance of many eating/ drinking places . It was comfortable inside with everything you need in it including a fridge/ mini bar and hairdryer and the bathroom was superb with the big bath and spacious shower . The hotel itself was lovely with very helpful and friendly staff who sorted a few travel issues ❤️❤️, all in all a stunning hotel with great staff and a lovely Italian style breakfast to set up your day , Bellissimo ❤️❤️❤️🇮🇹

Everything was good at Fra I Sassi Residence . The service was good from the beginning when they offered to arrange for a taxi to pick us up at the bus stop, which is at a bit of a distance. Nice to have a taxi waiting. Their recommendations for restaurants were also excellent. A shout out to the breakfast staff as well who were also kind and helpful. The breakfast buffet was excellent. Our room was very attractive, spacious and bright . It was cavernous in a good way :) We had a little patio sitting area outside our room. The Residence was in a perfect location, it was right in the Barisano sassi district and convenient to walking routes through the historic areas and yet also on a street that the taxi could access ( with our luggage) . We couldn't have been happier with our choice.

The hotel is in the heart of the Sassi Barisano with superb views of this part of the city and the cathedral from the hotel terrace. The hotel is a cave building which we wanted to experience and we were not disappointed. The staff were very pleasant and helpful, providing recommendations for dinner, booking an Ape tour of the city (which was excellent) and helping us with our ongoing travel arrangements. Nothing was too much trouble. There was good choice for breakfast which was a relaxing affair. There are plenty of good restaurants in the immediate area for lunch/dinner.

There was nothing we didn't like. The hotel signage could perhaps be a little better. When we arrived, we were unknowingly standing outside of the hotel but Rosita came out to meet us straight away so it was not an issue.
