This "room" is beyond description. It's basically part of an old church (800 AD to the late 1600s) and your bed is located in one of the apses with a very high ceiling. It's all stone/rock and the room is exceptionally silent. On the second "floor"/mezzanine in the room there is a huge jacuzzi with a light show. There is also a terrace (which you reach by climbing out an old window-turned-door and with a fantastic view of the cathedral. The room is very clean and there is a small minibar. Breakfast is served in the main church building and is adequate. This room cannot be compared to anything we have ever seen and is perfect for romantically oriented couples! Since Matera is very hilly we asked for a ported to carry our luggage to and from the hotel from and to our taxi (we arrived by bus). The staff was very helpful.

Being an old church the room is very humid, although there is a dehumidifier available. Wifi in the room was basically non-existent so we had to do our browsing in the hotel reception (a few meters away). The room is also very sandy, and whatever you touched got (a little) sandy. But this is a small price to pay for the unique experience this room offers!

The hotel is full of charm, from the entrance courtyard, to the views, the surroundings, and the reception and breakfast area. As a solo traveler, I knew I had chosen a small room, and the photos are exactly what you find in reality. So, no complaints there :) The room is small, but for one person and a short stay, I think it’s perfect. It has a special atmosphere, with the little window and the stunning view over the Sassi, it makes everything feel magical. Breakfast is varied, and the staff are very friendly and attentive. They handled my reservation at the car garage, which is literally a 5-minute walk from the hotel.

Just one point to mention, though I highlight that it’s a very personal preference, so I don’t consider it a negative aspect of the hotel: for me, the mattress was too soft, to the point that I couldn’t sleep comfortably that night. :(

I loved this place. Probably the smallest room I've ever stayed in, but very beautifully designed and appointed. The location was fantastic, with nice views and a pleasant and helpful staff, very classy lobby and a nice breakfast. Would definitely stay again.

It is important to be aware that no matter where you stay in Matera, you are going to have to do some walking and climbing with your bags ... this hotel is no different in that respect. The room was very small and there was really no place to put my bag or hang or unpack clothes. The shower was a bit small and would not be comfortable for a larger person, but this was just my room which was for a single traveler.

A very special stay. The most stunning hotel room we have ever stayed in, we probably stay in around 15 hotels a year for work and pleasure. We stayed for two nights to celebrate my 50th birthday and it did not disappoint. Exceptional quality and design with the most wonderful terrace with that view! The hot tub was needed after the days heat, a great addition to the stay. The staff were extremely attentive, with lots of hints and tips and a very good breakfast is served. I think this is the only way to stay in Matera

A tip, google maps does not work in Matera. If you can travel lite, it isn’t great for those not good on their feet.

Probably one of the loveliest hotels I have stayed in! The room was gorgeous with a vaulted ceiling and a huge ensuite (with Comfort Zone toiletries) and a walk in shower/wet room. The view from the room over Matera was exceptional - the room looked directly over the old cave town towards the cathedral. Francisco on reception was so helpful and gave us a map with a detailed description of what to see and the best route to take to walk around the old town. Breakfast is in the main reception area which is in a converted church cut into the rock - plenty of choice and beautifully presented.

It was hard to find a parking space but Gianluca from the hotel helped us. It may be helpful to other guests to provide information about the nearest underground secure car park on booking as that would have saved some phone calls to the hotel on arrival.

Location is good. Very helpful team, they got us special dietary every day. Very spacious room and beautiful for cosy winter Christmas vibes. We booked the room with jacuzzi and it was marvellous. They gifted us a beautiful wine bottle. Thank you

Would appreciated having someone helped us with the luggage on our way out, they did help us when we arrived though. They couldn't manage to get hold of the porter as it was Christmas day and the manager did help us half way through which was kind, but since I have a shoulder injury I can't carry heavy things. We should have reminded reception team on the check out to be pre arranged as it was Christmas.

The location and unique nature of the Sassi. Beautifully restored and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience of staying in a cave hotel .The view from our suite was magical at night The staff were friendly and helpful with recommendations for restaurants and arranged a seamless taxi transfer to our next destination in Locorotondo . We stayed two nights and would recommend at least that to enjoy all that Mateta has to offer

Perhaps some more fruit/yoghurt options at breakfast but that is a minor issue

It was fun to stay in a cave and the location in the old town was amazing. Staff were very friendly and helpful and there was a decent breakfast included in the cost. There’s a pleasant terrace overlooking the old town and across to the duomo

The location meant that it was only accessible on foot via lots of stairs which was hard work with our luggage. We’re fit and healthy so managed but if you aren’t travelling light or have mobility issues, find a hotel on one of the few roads through the old town.

We loved our stay in L’hotel in Pietra. The room was spacious, tidy and clean. The hotel staff were exceptional and accommodating and we can’t thank them enough. Coming from overseas I sent a lot of questions and each were responded quickly. Roberto was able to locate a private driver to assist us in our next destination all pre arranged before we arrived. I highly recommend this hotel as all our needs plus more were met. Breakfast was sufficient with variety. Matera is an experience you have to visit.

First time in Matera, what an absolutely magical place-surreal. My room was tiny, however, travelling alone I felt the peace & the bed was very comfortable along with a sensational shower. A little safe haven to come home to with a terrace with an amazing view. Thankyou to all your staff for your caring & professional hospitality, you were all wonderful, especially Roberto & Francesco. Thankyou also for carrying my suitcase down the many steps to the taxi , much appreciated :) I feel blessed to have chosen L’Hotel In Pietra :)
