Beautiful space, comfortable room and beds, gorgeous view, staff was incredibly kind and friendly!
The location is definitely a bit off the beaten track and the shuttle the hotel offers was in the shop for inspection, so getting into Gora was tricky.

Absolutely incredible stay! I visited as a solo traveler and the inn was very accommodating - they reached out shortly after booking to inquire about transportation needs for arrival/departure as well as and dietary restrictions and requests for meal times. I used the shuttle service from Chōkoku-no-Mori Station and was picked up promptly! I also had a welcome drink during check-in with a view of the mountains, then was led to my room where he showed me how to use the onsen and additional amenities. The front desk even came back to my room with my drink topped off! The room was beautiful and the onsen was the star of the show - it was already filled up and hot when I arrived to my room and I loved having the chance to take a long soak before changing into the complimentary yakuta robe and tabi socks before dinner. The meals were excellent and very traditional Japanese kaiseki cuisine with multiple courses in your own private dining room. The server was the same person who picked me up from the station, checked me into the inn, and showed me my room. He did an excellent job of explaining each course and answering my many questions about each delicacy I was trying. Alcohol like sake/beer/wine/etc. is an extra charge but reasonably priced. The Japanese breakfast was delicious! The beds were comfortable, the service from the front desk was impeccable, and other than the few guests I overheard in the room next to me during meals, I would've assumed I was the only guest there. The mountain view from my room was excellent and my only complaint is that wish that I'd stayed another night! All in all, I can't wait to visit again!!!
Nothing - everything was excellent!

Secluded Ryonkan in de mountains with lovely staff who went out of their way for us. It was a lovely 2 night stay after lots of sightseeing in Yokohama and Tokyo. At this slowpaced traditional Japanese B&B we could relax and unwind. Our private onsen overlooked the cherry blossoms (Sakura) and we feel so lucky to have had this experience. When we left early in the morning to make our train to Kyoto we missed our breakfast slot so the staff made a bento 🍱 box for us to take on the Shinkansen 🚄. Thank you for your kindness.
It’s remote, so think about how you want to get around before you book this place. They do offer a shuttle bus service to some stops. We made the decision to book a car once arriving in Odawara and this offered a lot of flexibility to explore gorgeous Hakone. If highend Japanese dining isn’t your thing, also don’t book this as this is part of the experience where the chef cooks an elaborate 8 course meal. We loved this and it was excellent food, but good to manage your expectations if you have fuzzy eaters in your family.

Beautiful Ryokan with exceptional service. We were warmly welcomed with a drink and taken to our rooms where all meals were served. The person looking after us was the perfect host, gentle and kind and always trying his best. The hotel hot spring bath was lovely and the Ryokan is a short bus ride from the Open Air Museum, which also tracks into the rest of the Hakone loop. It’s easy to use-find the letter for your line and follow progress on google maps and you will know when to ring the bell to get off. The Ryokan dropped us off at Gora and would have collected us also - they give you an old Motorola to contact them. We had our own taxi to get to the Ryokan on arrival day, which is something you might want to consider. Waking up in the morning to the sound of birds was lovely, and the meals were prepared with care and attention to detail. Especially good was the King Crab and Shaun-Shabu. You also receive robes, tabi socks, indoor and ourdoor sandals and a couple of free drinks a day. Definitely recommended for a good relax after a week of sightseeing.

This is a high-end ryokan. Each room is different. The place is incredibly quiet and private. We rarely saw other guests or even staff at the ryokan. Our room (and I think all rooms) had its own private onsen, which was a huge factor for us in selecting this ryokan. Breakfast and dinner are included. Both are kaiseki ryori style, meaning an elaborate multi-course meal. Our meals were served to us in an individual room overlooking the grounds. The food was impeccable. Don't come to a place like this if you want western style food. Think more Michelin star Japanese restaurant. Also, the staff was very helpful when I set up the transportation getting to the ryokan.
The only thing I didn't like about this ryokan is that the grounds were unimpressive. It was in a quiet wooded area, within a 23 minute walk to the Hakone Open Air museum, but the ryokan itself didn't have extensive grounds to explore. A very minor issue, however.

Loved every aspect of our stay. We took the Shinakensen from Tokyo Station and then a bus from Odawara to the Verde No Mori bus stop. It was a 5 minute, uphill walk to the ryokan from there. The room was very comfortable, the food was delicious, we had our meals in a private dining room and felt like we were the only guests. This is a small, traditional ryokan that did not feel excessively touristy. It is a bit off the beaten path and a drive or bus ride to town. The staff were very helpful and kind, and patient with our five year old. We ordered the toddler meals for our child and he (and we) were delighted that so much care was put into his meals. Food is traditional Japanese kaiseki -- fish and seafood play a large part. We all found it to be delicious. Having an onsen in room was perfect for the family. Our child loved when the water cooled and getting in and out of the tub throughout the day (morning, after nap, before dinner). The open air terrace off the onsen overlooked the road and we could hear cars passing, but not a big deal and we had privacy. The Open Air Museum was great and kid-friendly. We'd love to return.

This place is hands down the best stay I’ve had on any vacation in my life! The moment you step foot on the property, you are greeted by the nicest staff who help you with everything. The view that came with our room was so spectacular especially since it snowed the night before. The private onsen was so nice for relaxation that I just wanted to stay in it forever. The food that was provided was also super fresh and immaculate. The pickup and drop off service they provide also makes it super convenient to get around and sight see. Communication with staff was also very clear and polite. There is nothing more that I could’ve possibly asked for in an ideal vacation experience. I will definitely be coming back again and would recommend to anyone who is visiting Hakone! Thank you Hakone Kyuan for having us!

The food preparation and presentation was very elaborate. Just outstanding. Small staff, and everyone works so hard. Kanda wears many hats and took great care of us. The location is somewhat remote and mountainous. It was a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the city. Very pretty property. Spacious rooms. Very comfortable. When I was looking for a place to stay in Hakone, my preferences were for a ryokan that had private, in-room, hot spring bath, and served kaiseki meals. Hakone Kyuan met those expectations and more. Their shuttle service as well as providing a phone so that you could contact them while out touring were nice bonuses.
Overall it was a great experience that exceeded expectations, but nothing is perfect, and it's quite understandable why, so I will not specify the reasons for not giving a perfect score.

The room served Breakfast and Dinner. Breakfast was outstanding and consisted of a three-course meal featuring proteins, rice, and a variety of dish combinations, all finished with a breakfast dessert. The food was delicious and served in our room. The dining experience was fantastic, with abundant food—we couldn't finish it! The final dinner was an excellent five-course meal. We also had our private onsen in our room, which was fantastic because we could close the windows and doors for complete privacy. It was even better than the public onsen, as my wife and 10-year-old daughter didn't feel comfortable using the public facility. Our caretaker dropped us off and picked us up from town. The town is charming, with plenty to do. We visited the open-air museum, which was so great that we couldn't see everything. We will recommend this place to anyone.
Everything was excellent! The service, room, and food were top-notch. We had no complaints.

My husband and I booked a stay here in the middle of our first trip to Japan, and this ryokan blew us away. Our room was incredible, consisting of a dining area, bedroom with two very comfortable beds, a lounge area, and of course the bathroom with adjoining shower and hot spring bath. The bath was full and hot when we arrived, which was very welcome after a long day of traveling in the rain. The lounge and bath room both had large windows that could be opened to view Hakone and the surrounding mountains, and the view is gorgeous. Sitting in the hot spring bath looking out at the sky and the landscape is an experience I will never forget. We also booked the multi course kaiseki meal and the breakfast, both of which were absolutely amazing. We were served a large variety of fresh food according to the seasonal menu. This was something I was already looking forward to, and it well exceeded my expectations. The staff was wonderfully kind and friendly to us, and our limited Japanese did not act as a barrier to exceptional service. I would stay here again in a heartbeat!
