Unassuming from the outside this hotel was a fantastic place to stay. Highlights of our stop here were the set meal for dinner and breakfast, both of which gave us a real taste of Japan we wouldn't have otherwise seen. Traditional tatami matting, yukata to wear and adhering to Japanese customs gave the hotel a very different feel to our modern hotel rooms elsewhere. The rooms were large and our beds were made up seamlessly. They even accepted our luggage early so that we could go and explore before check in. We only used the private onsen which was a lovely space but the public onsen was also available.
Like others have said, the hotel is up a hill from the station but it's a mountainous region so either hop on the cable car or power on up. We didn't realise there was a very small charge for the onsen but it really wasn't worth quibbling over a few yen.

Everything is perfect. There are four buildings in the this hotel. I stayed in the unconnected Annex building, just across the road. The room is traditional Japanese style, spacious and comfortable. The private hot spring is fabulous! It has both indoor and outdoor hot springs, located in a small standalone building. The staff will bring you there. The dinner and breakfast is fine. The staff is very polite and can speak English. The only thing that is not so perfect is the location. The hotel is some distance away from the nearest railway station, and is on a steep slope. The price somewhat compensated the inconvenience. Overall still hotel worth to stay.

At first, I was hesitant about not choosing my meal but overall, the breakfast and dinner were absolutely delicious! The best meals I had in Japan all week. The rooms warmed up nicely and having the attached toilet was a major bonus! I kept saying, "I can't believe we get ALL of this for less than $200!" (Granted we traveled in Feb.). The staff was incredibly helpful despite the language barrier.
The website says there was a shuttle but I'm guessing they were understaffed and couldn't accommodate. BUT they did call us a taxi that took us where we needed. Super helpful!

* Great traditional inn with great facilities, food & staff. * Thermal spa on sire. * Staff happy to take you to local town od train station. Thankyou!
* Choice if food - although great quality (& service!) There is only do much sushi one can eat! * Language barrier - very hard to get answers to questions * No mention that the venue is situated on A VERY STEEP HILL!!! Google maps said it would take 18 mins to walk to hotel... NO WAY!!!!! A TAXI IS A MUST.... especially with suitcases!

The dinner and breakfast were good addition to those that want an authentic visit. Staff were friendly and room was clean. Also liked the turn down service during dinner. Close to ropeway ( famous black eggs and foot bath at the top) and art gallery/ short walk to outdoor air museum.
That the other people were loud coming and going all night to the other onsens or moving about the hotel as we were in the corner unit. Property is up a steep hill but take the cable car closer to property for a less strenuous hike.

The included meals for breakfast and dinner were amazing!! I got to try so many things I never would have before, they serve you an entire course menu for that day. The onsen also was fantastic, they have both male and female indoor onsen and a private indoor onsen we used as well for no additional charge. There were other onsen available too! Also, when checking out they offered to drive us to Gora station for free, which was much appreciated. It sounds like they're willing to come drive to pick you up from the station to check in too!
The staff didn't speak a whole lot of English, which was fine for me because I can get by with Japanese, but might make it harder for English speakers to make special requests.

The room was lovely, and could’ve easily been shared by 4 if needed. The traditional meals were divine and some of the best food I had, if you want to use the baths I recommend the ones in the separate house as the ones in the main building are a little small
It’s was a little expensive, but I was there during late march so at another time of year the price might be a little more reasonable. Although Hakone is accessible by public transport, there are multiple different types that you will need to use to get from accommodation to the local train line (and they all rely on separate tickets or day passes)

Best breaky and dinner I had in my 16 days first visit to Japan varying from 8 to 14 small plates to taste. proximity to cable car and japanese room experience. had a high table with regular chair for breaky and dinner.. can't take floor eating, sleeping and japanese box table with no room for long legs ... this was the tough part for North American not used to this flexibility!
mattress really not comfy on the floor. Had better futon in other places in Japan.

Location was fairly easy to reach by public transportation and a little bit of walking. We got a separate house for a family of five, slept on mattresses on the floor in the same room. Spacious.
The mattresses were not very comfortable, but I guess it depends on what have you gotten used to. I've had more uncomfortable beds in some hotels in Europe too. Dinner and breakfast are very fine, traditional japanese meals and pickier people might find it difficult to find much for their liking. Price was somewhat higher than for another onsen we stayed at Hakone
