Everywhere was clean, room was comfortable and all the staff very helpful.

Being a western guest we would have liked the hotel facilities be open later to take advantage of the warm weather and stunning views. A bar on the terrace would have been great. We had the buffet dinner at 7.30pm but you had to be quick because when it finishes at 9 it doesn’t mean the food stops it means get up and go! Also once you have finished dinner at 9 there was nothing to do . We can’t watch tv as there is no English we would have enjoyed a nightcap in an indoor bar or outdoors with some music or entertainment. So it was bedtime early as the hotel was quiet and empty also there is nowhere within walking distance to go to so that was disappointing.

What are delightful family stay. The pool was large, clean and with beautiful surroundings. The beds were comfortable. The hotel was very well located near Shimoda within walking distance or a very short drive to the town, a multitude of stunning beaches, and lovely hikes (walks) by the 7 waterfalls region. The washer/dryer was also quite reasonably priced at 100-200 yen per wash or dry. I wished we could have stayed longer. Of note, this is one of the few pools in the area that was open so early before the Jspanese summer holiday. We went in early July.

The restaurant was quite expensive.

The booking listed the room as "balcony with mountain view". Seeing the photos, I was nervous about this not being a good view. There is a sea. Actually, these are the best rooms. From the balcony you have a view of the sea. (Though from inside the room, you can mostly only see the mountain.) Moreover, the rooms with sea views have no balcony. So, if you are confused by which room. Go for the "balcony with mountain view" ones. The Onsen was delightful and had a great view. Go while it is light out! We also got the breakfast included. Usually, I avoid hotel breakfasts. Well, not in Japan, and not at this resort. The breakfast is well worth it, and there are also not really other nearby options.

We are a family of four and had a fantastic experience at Shimoda Tokyu Hotel. The onsen was lovely and relaxing, and the breakfast offered a great variety of delicious options. The garden and pool area were beautiful and very child-friendly, which made our stay even more enjoyable. We had our own car, which was convenient, although the hotel also provides shuttle buses to and from the city center. We didn’t dine at the hotel, but we highly recommend the local tonkatsu restaurant just a short walk away — it was excellent! The hotel staff were incredibly kind and interacted warmly with our children. We’ve stayed here before and will definitely return the next time we visit Shimoda.

While we had a wonderful stay overall, there are a few areas that could be improved. The rooms, although clean and comfortable, are starting to feel a bit dated and could benefit from some modern updates. Also, having more dining options at the hotel itself would be a plus, especially for families who prefer to eat on-site.

Unbelievable location perched on the cliff above a spectacular beach. The grounds are glorious, with flowers and butterflies in profusion. Our room had a view over the bay and was very comfortable. The pool was stunning - very White Lotus vibes. Staff were very friendly and helpful, even helping us warm food in the staff microwave. A special three days spent chilling and swimming and exploring - particularly after the frenetic bustle of Tokyo.

The restaurant should have a simpler, cheaper menu option. Maybe some poolside service like you get in so many other hotels. We didn’t eat there - it was expensive and a set menu option only.

The view from the lobby was breathtaking! We were thankful that the hotel had great landscaping outside with pathways to walk and a few benches and beach chairs available to really enjoy the beauty of being in nature. We took the stairs down to the water twice during out stay. If you turn to the right at the bottom of the (long) stair path, you will find a small beach. Keep going a few hundred meters and we found a YouTube famous restaurant that was AMAZING! It had great food, great staff, and it stayed open late for dinner which was a huge bonus. If you turn left at the bottom of the stairs, you will find an oceanfront promenade with lovely views of the bay. Our room was a generous size for 4 people and met our accommodation needs well.

Unfortunately, I used the onsen at night and did not get to see the amazing ocean views that my husband reported when he used the onsen after breakfast. So, be sure to use the outdoor onsen during the day time! Our room had a partial ocean and partial mountain view, which was lovely, but for the price of the room, I would have hoped for a full ocean view with outdoor furniture to enjoy sitting out on the balcony. Also, be aware that the walk to the beach has many stairs; this was challenging for my 75 year old mother-in-law.

Everything about the hotel was perfect. My favourite hotel I’ve stayed at in Japan - would come back to Japan just for the hotel. Exceptional room and view. Staff friendly and happy to help. Shuttle bus to and from train station great but only a 15 minute walk to town for restaurants. Great selection for breakfast, and whilst I didn’t have dinner the menu sounded amazing. Next time I stay I will come on the weekend to be able to try the afternoon tea. Gift shop in the hotel lovely too - got my favourite souvenir here.

Nothing - this hotel is my favourite memory from Japan.

Warm welcome in the car park, then through to reception. Great view of the bay from the room. Well-equipped bathroom and good facilities in the room. Comy beds, and a good-sized sofa in the room. Restaurant excellent - at dinner, there was a good selection of meals and some outstanding Izu wines; breakfast buffet was great, wide selection of dishes and drinks. Location close to Perry Road museum, and Ryosenji Temple, and some small kissaten. Ideal location to explore Minami and Nishi Izu, hiking, watersports, and even as far as the famous waterfealls at Kawazu Nana Daru, Cape Irozaki, and the beaches on the suth coast. Bonus was visiting the museum home of Yasunori Kawabata, the author of Izu Dancing Girl - the famous Odoriko.

Only a single elevator. Entrance to restaurant a little confusing between the toilets. Breakfast buffet excellent, but some items such as coffee stand are really in awkward places.

Breakfast was amazing, you could literally have anything and everything - sushi, curry, egg bacon and sausages, pastries, traditional Japanese, difference fruit juices, teas and coffee, fruit, countless and impressive. View was amazing. Room was clean. Nice onsen. Excellent staff. Curteous, friendly but not intrusive. I don’t know their language skills as I am Japanese so did not have speak English.

The evening food menu was a little pricey so we walked down and got some local food. The bar was only open at the weekend which was a shame I fancied a bit of a cocktail overlooking the view!

Beautiful situation on top of a cliff overlooking two bays. Very friendly staff and good facilities. Comfortable rooms with plenty of space. Restaurant food was excellent. Lovely breakfast was included with a massive choice.

Bar didn’t open until 8pm, so not encouraging pre-dinner drinks! Restaurant was very expensive with haphazard service, though all staff were very friendly and helpful. Had to wait 15 minutes to get seated for breakfast. Oh, and it didn’t stop raining for our whole stay!
