Murataya was my favorite place to stay in my time in Japan.  It is a great opportunity to live in a traditional Japanese guest house (Ryokan) - with Tatami on the floor, sliding wooden doors and even a hot bath.  I liked my small single room. It was very clean, everything worked as it should. It was quiet. (I stayed in other Ryokans, in which you could hear every movement in the house. Murataya is a much more calmly) I very much appreciated the family that runs Murataya. The younger man, who manages the guests and bookings, speaks English very well. He treated me excellently. Respectful and friendly. He even did extra things like drying my shoes or helping me with information, where to buy stuff in the city. The japanese (or western) breakfast was prepared by the lady of the house every morning. I found the food tasty and plentyful, with some variety. Prices and value: From my point of view, they charge not much - neither for the room, nor for the breakfast. The prices where modest, to say the least, from my European point of view.  The atmosphere of a traditional Japanese Ryokan comes with a price: Bathrooms are shared. Furnishings are not modern. The breakfast room is simple with no windows. No problem, but you need to know that. So, Murataya may be not for you, if you want a modern room, where every wall seems to have been freshly painted a few weeks ago, or If you need a glorious dining room. Apart from that it's a great place to stay. I would come back there any time

This place is magical. We felt so taken care of by the hosts. We loved the atmosphere and the amenities provided, like hot hojicha tea on arrival to drink in your room. Our room had a door to the mossy courtyard which was so beautiful in the rain. We loved wearing the robes and pajamas provided, used the onsen together every day, and paid for the incredible Japanese breakfast each morning. Don't miss out on the breakfast! It was delicious!! And so much food. We also loved the location, how close it was to shopping and food. We were sad to leave Murataya as it was one of the most special places we've ever stayed! Plus, the hotel is a good price! We recommend this place to anyone that visits Kanazawa.

The sliding door to the first floor women's toilet is very noisy. I felt disruptive when I opened it. It was close to our room so it was loud. The second floor womens toilet has a normal door, so I think it could be updated. It's an old building with thin walls so we knew there would be some noise, but we had a noisy family nextdoor to us that woke up very early. We had to use earplugs to sleep but that is ok! It wasn't a big deal.

Murataya Ryokan has been a great stay in Kanazawa. It's a very traditional facility, including a traditional hall with an old tea pot table and public bath. The room > cosy and clean, they provide also all the necessary stuff to prepare the tea (very tasty). The bed (futon) is comfortable. The bathroom > it's shared, but extremely clean and with all the amenities (shampoo, conditioner, body wash). They also have the so called "public bath" area where you can relax in a hot pool. Location > very convenient, close to all the main attractions by feet and not far from the train station by bus (10/15 mins). Moreover, there are several restaurants and stores all around the area. The staff > helpful and kind, very welcoming as well and they can keep your luggage after check out. I'd definitely recommend this Ryokan for a traditional stay at a very good quality-price!

I'd put a long mirror somewhere in the room or in the common areas.

We loved the traditional structure, colors, furniture of the Murataya ryokan. We learnt about Japanese breakfast, shared spaces use, and about genuine welcoming. The family managing the ryokan was always helpful and accommodating. They helped and gave advise. Though not use to share bathroom that was never a problem. We were 2 adults and our son of 12. Also, price-quality ratio is really good. 100% advised if you don’t look for anonymous, western style hotels in Japan !

All was fine, but we needed some time to get used to the tatami and futon.

Don't miss out on this ryokan experience in Kanazawa. I felt transported into a different time as soon as I entered the genkan. So charming, so old, so well kept and so full of warmth from the staff. I loved everything about the accomodation. Bathrooms and onsens were an unforgettable and uniquely Japanese experience, the whole place was spotless and the location so close to everything. I didn't want to leave. The futon, the hot water in the room, the attention to detail are all so lovely. I cannot rave enough.

Not one single thing.

Firstly DONT worry about the "shared bathroom" because all it means is that the bathroom isnt connected to your bedroom, but you dont share it with anyone lol. The staff explain that its private, ie: you lock it from the inside and you have the entire thing to yourself. Also dont worry about noise. The walls arent made of paper, for all intents and purposes its a standard hotel room just with traditional japanese furnishings. Those were the 2 biggest concerns I had, but Im so glad I just went for it anyway because this is now one of my favourite places to visit. Genuinely Lovely staff, great location, I absolutely loved everything about this cute little traditional Japanese inn. If youre traveling to Kanazawa, chances are its because you want to experience traditional Japan, and if your like me, I didnt just want to stay in another boring b and b, I wanted something a little more fitting, and this place was 100% perfect. I could of happily stayed a week. I honestly miss it already. - dont let the star rating fool you. It may not be a luxury hotel, but thats kind of the point. - Shes got it where it counts, and great value to boot. After a week already in Japan, this was like a refreshing little holiday within a holiday. Id do it again in a heartbeat.

Personally, I loved everything about this little inn.

It's a great traditional ryokan, felt very homey and cozy. Loved the decorations throughout! The staff is amiable and hospitable. The highlight is definitely the hot bath! Super relaxing, and you can lock the door and enjoy it for yourself (obviously be mindful of other guests waiting!). Also, I loved the bathrobes provided - super stylish and comfortable!

I got a quite small room, definitely not very practical if you have a large suitcase. Not too much storage. I think other rooms might have been larger though.

Loved this place located in the heart of the lively area of Kanazawa. Although the location is right in the midst of everything (walkable to all notable places and the Tama river) the street is quiet. The accommodation was fantastic and they had a Japanese style Sento bath for guests. The room was spacious! By far the best thing was the staff. They were so helpful, kind, and even DREW us a map of the locality with recommendations of where to eat. Will highly highly recommend this place to anyone traveling to Kanazawa

Location excellent to explore this relaxed city; room perfect (standard Japanese room- shared bathroom); common lounge area for reading; excellent value for money; great value breakfast with the best bread we had in our 3 weeks in Japan ( the proprietor told me it came from a long way away-I don’t think she meant France or Germany!) And kindness- we arrived 2 hours before check in and as one of our party was unwell they let us check in early so he could sleep.

I am very happy and privileged to stay in a hotel that is maintained like a century-old monument. The carpets are clean and comfortable. The room has a very comfortable aroma of incense, and there is no old mold at all. It feels like entering a charming Japanese restaurant, but you have to check in and stay. The landlord's English skills are very good and communication is smooth. The service is very trustworthy. Even though it is very late to use the hot spring bath, he will still maintain and clean it. Very touched, highly recommended
