A perfect small guesthouse for travellers seeking a quiet Japanese Townhouse experience. Of all places I stayed in Kyoto, where I never had a bad accommodation, this might be my favourite. Not only is it in a beautiful sympathetically renovated Kyoto town house, with wooden floors and beautifully painted doors and a lot of natural wood, but a business that aims to take steps toward sustainability, like reusable towels, no single use items, and renting out free bicycles to guests, when, of course, cycling is the best way to see Kyoto. The house is very stylish in a calm and traditional way, I loved just viewing all the different rooms. My futon was very comfy, the duvet warm, there was a kettle for making tea in my room, and my room was very cosy and had everything I would need. I also loved that they give you a ticket for a sento and encourage you to use the sento, any sento that takes part in the scheme in Kyoto, and you can borrow a sento basket with shampoo etc from reception. I went to the sento a couple hundred metres away before heading to the airport, which was wonderfully relaxing.

This is owed to the structure of the house, but it was a rather long way from my bedroom to the bathroom, especially in the middle of the night in the cold. All those glass screen doors can be very confusing especially in the dark, but I understand that's owed to being an old house.

the property was a perfect taste of traditional life in a residential suburb of kyoto, while not being too far away from tourist sites. the staff were friendly and it really did feel like staying in a home.

however, given that it was a traditional house, several amenities were missing that would have made the stay perfect. the manual lock and key on my room door was a bit of an annoyance every time getting in and out. the lack of a bidet in the toilets also made it less pleasant.

The house was typically old style Japanese, it was super quirky and immaculately clean. The staff were very friendly and accommodating to my needs and I loved the delicious home made breakfast!

Unfortunately I couldn’t sleep on the bed - the duvet and pillow were wonderfully comfortable, but the Japanese style mattress was too hard for me to sleep on so I didn’t rest well. There are 5 bedrooms but only two toilets so something to be aware of.

The traditional Japanese wooden house with the tatami floor bedrooms, very comfortable futons and the private garden view with the camelia blossoms. Amazing breakfast and tea & coffee facilities. The host was really welcoming and provided excellent restaurant recommendations. Good location and easy connection with great coffee and food near by, check out Yoshihara for amazing coffee. The public onsen was incredible. We will be back!

Wow, what a stay! It was a beautiful house, impeccably clean, a room with a great space, overlooking the garden, it was everything I imagined it to be! Although this ryokan didnt have an onsen, they do offer free tickets to one nearby we just couldn't go in at the specified time. That was the only bummer. The breakfast was hearty enough for us to go to the monkey mountain, I loved staying here! Thank you so much!

A lil far from the center but I didn't mind, it gave us a different side of Kyoto, peaceful and serene, more local

Super cozy, staff is very attentive and friendly. Every room was heated (early march) and there is a lot of love and effort put into the accommodation. I was always happy to return to this place after a long day of walking. The staff also has a very good English level and the location is not far from a few stations.

The exterior is so beautiful, and so is the interior. A mix or western and Japanese, leaning more on the Japanese side.

The stairs are VERY steep. This location is not wheelchair friendly, which wasn’t a concern for our group but it is something worth knowing. You also had to order breakfast before 6:30AM which seems a bit unreasonable

The hospitality was great. Very helpful, friendly and considering our needs. We could feel like at home. Even if it was cold outside, inside it was comfy and we could sufficiently use the heaters. I liked in particular the thick blankets. Also bathrooms and water system was completely fine. The possibility that we could rent bikes to explore Kyoto made our stay perfect.

Locations nearby close quite early in the evening, about 9 pm. That is why the place there is rather quiet, what is also good! But late eaters have to consider this. The centre is nearby, though, so it is not really an issue.

It is my second time visiting Higurashi Sou and I just love it! It is very cozy, clean and the breakfast is my favourite! This time as I was travelling alone, I had a small room, but it was perfect with a nice side lamp, table and basically everything you need. I used the common areas to read and drink a coffee looking out to the garden - perfect!

Maybe for some travellers it might be far from the city centre.

Excellent Japanese experience and excellent staff

Everything is good and well kept. One flaw: no bathroom on the 2nd floor so quite uncomfortable and metro is 15 minutes walking. Besides these 2 points it’s a great place to stay
