The in-room onsen was amazing and such a wonderful experience for our family. The views from the windows and the rooftop onsen was so relaxing and private. The food was delicious, the rooms were clean and spacious, and all the amenities provided made us feel extremely comfortable. I highly recommend!!

Breakfast and dinner were both excellent.

There was a smoking room on each floor so of course the smell would get embedded in the carpets . Best to re-carpet and get rid of the smoking rooms.

Almost everything! The room is spacious and comfy, the meal (breakfast & dinner) were delicious, and i love the location as it situated not in a crowded area. Their onsens were also pretty good. And this need for be emphasized tremendously, the staff were so helpful, warm and accommodating. In an essence, Tamanoyu is a great place for a relaxing gateway.

The room that i booked was not a tatami flooring, felt a bit cold at the first place, but after that i get used to it. Still loving it.

Half board dinner and breakfast was excellent quality and also varied by day. Live music after dinner was a real highlight. We booked early morning private outside onsen which was nice. Room was spacious and well equipped. Staff were friendly and very helpful.

The electric chair was a bit odd. The location is on edge of town so not really walkable to main attractions. There is a bus that goes into town about 5mins walk away.

The staff were very professional and accommodating. They arranged for the bus to take us to the train station out of the regular schedule. They were also accommodating with making a western style breakfast for those that didn't want a traditional Japanese meal.

The location was a bit far from the train station, but the facility was lovely.

The breakfast was a wonderful culinary experience. We also enjoyed the private onsen very much. Staff was extremely helpful and considerate. They were very accommodating for English speaking guests.

Wished the dinner meal set was larger but it was probably because we had ordered late when we had arrived.

Everything! The hotel is just outstanding. It is a Japanese style hotel with traditional rooms. We were a family with 2 kids staying for one night. The staff did their best to make us feel like almost kings. Dinner was Japanese and also the breakfast. Amazing experience.

Absolutely loved this hotel. Modern Ryokan style with amazing customer service from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave. We were greeted at our taxi and our luggage was taken to our rooms. We were offered a hot towel, tea and a sweet on arrival while we completed the checkin process seated on lounges. We were provided traditional hotel pyjamas (Jinbei) with socks and slippers throughout our stay. Our son left his wallet in the taxi but the hotel arranged its immediate return (they brought it to our room) and we received a small local gift on departure. Room was comfortable, clean and well serviced. The hotel called a taxi for our return to the station.

It was about 5km from the train station so we used a taxi, which was very reasonable. There was a bus available but we opted for the taxi instead. Couldn't fault anything else!

We have traveled to Japan many times, but this was our first time staying at a ryokan and it was so much more than we anticipated. Every staff member was so friendly, kind, and spoke English. We booked a corner suite with a private onsen. As others have mentioned, the check-in process is very individualized and leisurely. We were asked to sit down, they brought manju and tea, and a staff member (Reimi) explained everything to us. Reimi also escorted us to the suite and provided more information about it and the onsen. Dinner and breakfast were outstanding with multiple courses at each meal. Even though food is served in their dining hall, each party has it's own partitioned eating area (with shoji doors). Our son didn't feel well toward the end of dinner and missed dessert. We were surprised that our server saved his dessert and presented it to him at breakfast. As we checked out, the manager gifted us with temari ball trinkets. If you are visiting Matsumoto, Nagano I would highly recommend staying over night at Hotel Tamanoyu.

The only drawback was the shower water wasn't hot, but we didn't complain. We were just so happy to be there.

Japanese style room with private onsen - lovely, clean space. Really helpful staff, very friendly greeting at door as well as seeing you out after checkout. Everything I needed was there, and the food was lovely.
