WiFi : free and powerful Bathroom: perfect water pressure, shower and tub, all amenities no exception Breakfast : Meiji style room, there is everything : japanese and western. Lovely, characterful old hotel in perfect location for sightseeing and eating in Matsumoto. Just minutes walk from the castle. Staff were friendly and helpful, great breakfast, nice onsen.

The rooms in the annex are aged and could use some freshening up. There was a strong smell in the entrance from the cleaning product used in the bathroom and despite being clean, it didn’t look clean.

The hotel experience was great, despite the outdated rooms. It started with the staff, who were very accommodating and friendly. The hotel featured a public bathhouse that was very clean and had a relaxing atmosphere. I recommend the hotel's breakfast, which was quite complete, catering to both Western tastes and those looking to experience local cuisine. The hotel also had a reasonably priced laundry area to wash and dry your clothes (200 yen to wash and 300 yen for a 1.5-hour dry cycle). The location was excellent, within walking distance of the main sites and the train station.

The room accommodations were very outdated, but the beds were comfortable if you booked the larger room. The description on Booking.com seemed inaccurate, as it was listed as a 4-star hotel. While it may have been at one point, the hotel's charm makes up for the outdated and old carpet room. If you book the small two-bedroom, be aware that the bed is too small to comfortably fit two people.

Arriving on the train and the short walk through the town to the hotel was a perfect start to the stay in Matsumoto. The hotel is a lovely old building with all the comforts you could need. The staff are very obliging and nothing is too much trouble. The room was spacious enough for 4 people, with traditional futon plus the low table on the tatami. The onsen is lovely, and opening hours cater for those who might be a little shy about communal bathing. A 4am solo onsen was just the ticket! The breakfast buffet catered for all tastes, and it was great to see most guests tucking into a hearty Japanese breakfast. But if cereal and yoghurt is your thing, then that’s covered as well.

The shower area in the room is looking a little tired and not in keeping with the quaintness of the room. But it was clean and the water hot and great water pressure.

Room was stunning. Everything I had hoped for when I booked it, and more. Situated in the old side, on its own and with a balcony. Bathroom was large. Beds were huge, especially because they're put together. I'm tall, but could sleep across both without any body part being over an edge if I had wanted to. Windows were on 3 walls which allows lots of light in, even if you keep the blinds tilted to maintain your privacy. Noise was minimal. Just one small Izakaya on an adjacent side street, which keeps it's doors closed, so you only get a small amount of noise when guests leave, but they soon disappear behind other buildings. Other than that, noise can only be heard when on the balcony.

Bathtub was light, and not fixed to the floor, so could move as you're getting in or out, especially because the floor is uneven. Maybe consider using easy access clips so the cleaners could unclip the bathtub to move it and clean the underside? This would eliminate unwanted movement and wobbling, but keep the ability to move it when needed, and would guarantee the large, fixed shower head is lined up correctly. Also, there was barely any room between the beds and wall where the TV was situated, and also between the bed and the sliding doors out onto the balcony. Can be worked around, but is difficult for larger people.

Room was extremely spacious. It was like a small apartment. My granddaughter said it was the best place we stayed in Japan! The staff was extremely helpful. We arrived before check in time and when they said we could check in, our bags were all in our room when we were accompanied there by one of the staff. Everyone was professional, kind, and willing to help. When it was raining, there was someone from the staff standing outside with an umbrella to greet us and walk us in.

There were a few funky steps to get to our unit so it didn't quite matter if you took the elevator to the second floor, there were still a few steps to negotiate but if that's the worst part of the hotel, it really wasn't a negative at all.

The hotel offered the choice of a western or Japanese style room. Choosing the tatami and futon was perfect. The room was set up beautifully. The breakfast was wonderful with a wide range of Japanese local produce and everything was fresh and delicious. The onsen facilities were clean and it was the perfect way to relax after a lot of walking. The hotel is located close to the castle and to the Matsumoto art gallery with a range of local coffee shops around. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

The bathrooms were very clean but are a little old and might benefit from the toilets being replaced.

This was a great play for an overnight stay in the town. Close to the castle and the old town. Staff were lovely and responsive. Room was a good size The breakfast was very generous although there was a big tour party accommodated in the hotel which meant a considerable wait. Not an issue for us however. We enjoyed the onsen facility and would definitely recommend this hotel.

The room was a little dated and would benefit from some sprucing up in places but it was extremely clean and didn’t impact our stay.

I am reviewing this hotel from the perspective of a neurodivergent person (with autism) who is sensitive to noise and heat. I really loved the location of this place. It is so close to Matsumoto castle and the park that you can go a few times a day just to relax and walk, and to enjoy the castle itself during the day and the light show at night during winter. During my 2 nights I went 5 times to the park as it was convenient and I enjoyed walking around. It's also not too far from the station, an easy 15 or so minutes walk and there's a few convenience stores 5 minutes walk away. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, and happy to answer my questions. The room temperature was fully controllable in the main annex building. I was worried about this based on other reviews but I could easily heat or cool my room without issue. Otherwise the beds were fine, the bathroom was also good, and the rooms were a good size. The hotel itself has quite old/quaint furniture which I didn't kind but if you want something modern this hotel is a bit lacking in that front. The onsen was ok. Nothing amazing, but not bad either.

The walls were very thin, and I had very loud neighbours unfortunately. I could hear them laughing and talking away at odd hours and it was pretty frustrating. Definitely bring your earplugs if you are sensitive. The internet in my room was also very hit and miss. It wasn't stable so I couldn't stream shows Etc. Without it needing to pause every minute or two. Bit annoying, but still usable. The room itself had some permanent stains in carpet of maybe tomato sauce or similar? Nothing too large and I don't really care but it might be off-putting to others.

Nice room, clean, tatami floor and futons. very nice public bath. Nice part of town- about 15 minutes walk from the station and quite close to the castle. Good coffee shops nearby. The hotel does an excellent Kaiseki lunch ( you need to make a reservation for this! They very kindly did this for us at short notice) Lovely waitstaff in restaurant. Some reception staff very helpful.

The reception staff were friendly enough, and very helpful, but seemed to be quite protocol driven and (from my Australian perspective) over-bureaucratised. There was a set way for things to be done. For example, I had to reserve and pay for the buffet breakfast in advance and was given breakfast tickets. It was uncomfortable for all when I turned up to breakfast unable to find the tickets, even though the reception desk was well aware I had paid for it.
