The location is fantastic. You're right by Matsumoto Castle, a beautiful shrine, and frog Street which is full of lovely souvenir shops and eateries. About 15 minutes walk from Matsumoto station too. The accommodation provides 4 bicycles on a first come, first served basis for no extra charge. It's a great way to do some sightseeing in the backstreets and stumble across more beautiful shrines. Use them to visit Matsumoto Mingeikan Folk Art Museum, a beautiful little building which contains lots of interesting and equally beautiful objects both from Matsumoto and around the world. The breakfast for 700yen each was very good and has a good selection of food to choose from. Really nice shower with lots of water pressure. Very friendly and helpful staff.

The double beds are on the small side, so if you're adults sleeping in them, prepare to be quite cosy.

Rooms were as expected, business hotel size. It was fine for us as a couple and our two adult children were ok in a double with one sleeping on the floor. The parking lot is very close to the hotel with allocated spaces and it costs a reasonable ¥1000 per day. You can come and go as you please. Only 10 minutes walk to the impressive Matsumoto-jo (the castle) and we enjoyed a special ftee sound and illumination event at night at the castle on the weekend we were staying. The owner is friendly and helpful. We felt welcomed. If we stay again we will use the free bicycles to ride around the city. This is a good hotel to use in Matsumoto.

Breakfast dishes that should have been hiot (scrambled eggs, sausages) were cold in the first morning and warm on the second day. Aside from that, we were very satisfied with our stay.

Yes, the hotel does seem a bit old, as other reviews mention, but it’s very well-maintained and exceptionally clean. The room was relatively spacious, with a lovely view of the tower and city. The breakfast was simple but very good. The location is fantastic, right in the center. The staff were polite and helpful. I really enjoyed both the hotel and Matsumoto, and I somewhat regret only being able to stay for one night.

I was a bit disappointed that there was only a cover and a sheet instead of a proper blanket, which caused me to wake up several times during the night. I would have preferred a standard duvet with a cover, for reasons of comfort and hygiene.

Breakfast was provided in the lobby cafe (although get in early as once it's gone, no restocking). Vending machines were well priced. Staff were lovely and well equipped to communicate with foreigners. Close to the castle, not too far from the station.

We booked a triple room for my husband, myself and our two children - there was the option to request an additional bed for our child, however this was not an option the hotel provided, so ended up with three beds for the four of us - a bit more of a squeeze that usual for my husband and I in a small double, but fine for one night!

This hotel is great value for money and located less than 10 minutes walk from the famous castle which is the main reason people visit Matsumoto. It is also just a couple of minutes walk from the river and the Yohoshira Shrine, so all the main sights are within walking distance. The room was quite small but that is normal for hotels in Japan. They provide free coffee in the lobby 24 hours a day and allowed me to check-in at 1 p.m.; most hotels in Japan do not permit check-in until at least 3 p.m.

Very friendly staff. Towels were changed daily and nice quality toiletries were provided. We liked the free tea and coffee that was available in the reception at the touch of a button. The breakfast was very good with a mixture of Western and Japanese food so there was something for everyone and the selection of food varied from day to day. We enjoyed our stay and thought it was very good value for money.

Nothing to dislike. The room was rather small but we did know before we booked and this is quite normal throughout Japan so we were prepared for this.

This friendly family run inn is very close to both the train/bus station and castle, as well as a wide variety of food restaurants bars and attractions. Check in was easy and they strive to provide English in written instructions and using their phone. The room was clean with a nice window and good bathroom. Breakfast was extensive with a variety of options and coffee always provided. It’s a great value for the location, room and breakfast.

Make sure to get to breakfast before 8:50 to get ample food (by 8 am is best). The room is very small, and the bed and covers really aren’t designed for two westerners (and we are not big by US standards). Mattress for us was hard. But honestly for three nights it was great given the price and other benefits.

The hotel was very close to Matsumoto Castle and Aeon Mall as well as several nice restaurants. The bed was comfortable and the air conditioning worked well. The room had a fridge that worked well. Parking was available 100 meters away at a reasonable price, you could come and go as you pleased at no additional charge.

The room was a little small but normal for most hotels in Japan. If you drive there are lots of one way streets in this area, it could be troublesome if you have never driven in Japan.

The staff were fantastic, beyond helpful and made the experience phenomenal. The cleaners smiled and greeted us every day and the gentleman at the front desk helped us ship our luggage hassle free. The location was also perfect

The beds could be slightly larger, but my partner and I are quite tall and this is a fairly normal sized bed in Japan.

The gentleman at the front was genuinely nice. The buffet breakfast was great. The gentleman was able to answer my questions regarding ingredients, which was very helpful for an individual with allergies/ intolerances. They had complimentary Japanese ceramic tortoise charms at the front. The location is close to the Castle and they were happy to look after our luggage after checking out. Our stay in Matsumoto was such a pleasant one. Also, I liked that they maintained the good old door lock and key. We would stay at Southern Cross Inn Matsumoto again.
