The room and beds were very comfortable. Air conditioning worked well. Breakfast was not included, but the food and coffee were delicious. Bathroom was very modern and clean. Laundry downstairs was convenient. The building is maintained very well for its age, and it was really peaceful even with some creaky floorboards. Our host was very friendly and accommodating. My girlfriend and I had a wonderful stay, and we'll have to book here again the next time we're in Matsumoto.
An anti-mosquito lamp for the room would be nice in the summer since occasionally some can get inside.

Beautiful and comfortable. I got very ill after check in and they were extremely helpful in arranging for a hospital visit. I had heat stroke and the stress and heat was exacerbating my asthma - thankfully I had not caught anything contagious. The owner went above and beyond, showing up to the hospital to bring me back to the ryokan as it was late, and showing genuine concern for my wellbeing. I was able to rally, but it was reassuring to have the staff offer a later check out. My family slept very well and the location was perfect for our excursions.

The hotel staff were wonderful, very thoughtful and always willing to help. The hotel is a traditional Japanese Ryokan, it's a beautiful building and it was a fantastic experience to stay here. As well mentioned in advance, the hotel is 100 years old so the walls are thin and the wooden stairs make a bit of noise when going up and down (so I would suggest earplugs if you're sensitive to noise at bedtime). The hotel has a cozy living room where self-service tea is provided. Although our room took a long time to heat up - the bathroom was a little chilly, it was fully renovated, the shower was brilliant and the beds were incredibly comfortable, like sleeping in a cloud! Another plus, It's located in a really good area. Thank you so much for your hospitality!

Loved the whole real Japanese experience and the staff were all lovely. In a superb location for exploring Matsumoto which we thought was a really great arty city to visit on our first trip to Japan.
I would not say we ‘didn’t like’ this but the management did say it was a real original Japanese old house and that did mean it was quite noisy especially when other guests were going up and down the stairs. We had a room with the bathroom on the landing not in the room. It was private and it was really nice but it did mean if you needed a wee in the night you did need to leave the room. Not overly problematic but not ideal.

This is the nicest accommodation we have stayed in our trips to Japan. The staff were exceptional, especially Michyio who helped us willingly with so many local arrangements. The ryokan was gorgeous and authentic and the location perfect for enjoying so many interesting things in and around Matsumoto. Breakfast was outstanding and we felt as if we were being welcomed into someone's lovely historical Japanese home. We highly recommend staying here if you can when visiting Matsumoto.
Not a single thing!

Excellent location and with very pleasant staff. We were in walking distance of just about everything on a very charming and attractive street with food and shopping. The area was active but at night it was quiet. The windows opened so we could see the mountains and also have some fresh air. The hosts were very friendly and attentive. They also had a little cafe with a small menu that served breakfast which served good quality food and was a great way to start the day. I would definitely stay here again.

The owner is such an amazing hostess - very welcoming and friendly. We enjoyed our room and setting up our Japanese beds. The lounge area with free coffee all day was lovely and we appreciated the guide map to the area with our hostess’s personal recommendations. The shower was exceptional!- a pleasant surprise in an older building Ps - you must try Sidecar straight across the road from the ryokan if you enjoy classic cocktails — these are truly exceptional and the best we’ve had anywhere in the world!

Fantastic ryokan experience in a great part of town. Staff are friendly and cheerful. The Matsumoto Brewery Tap Room is just over the road, lots of food options around, and a short walk to the castle. The house is old, but beautiful, and it only adds to the authentic experience. All very clean and the bathroom was modern and newly renovated (private bathroom outside of the main room). Breakfast was great. Matsumoto was one of our favourite towns in the Japan alps - it has a very relaxed and inviting feel, and we would stay longer next time. We recommend staying at least a couple of nights, rather than just making it a day trip!
Nothing that we didn't like. The private bathroom is outside of the main room, but this is necessary given the type of building it is.

This is a really charming ryokan, ideally and centrally situated for the trains, buses and sites. It is very authentic, on a charming and quaint street, and the staff are lovely.
Unfortunately we hit a very cold snap of weather, and although we were able to heat our room up eventually, the bathroom was pretty chilly. It was also on the floor below so not ideal for a visit in the night down some very steep stairs. Some rooms at this property are definitely much bigger and better than others, and our experience might have been more favourable in another room, and in warmer weather!

When we arrived at the ryokan it was snowing and cold in Matsumoto. Our host immediately gave us towels and helped us feel welcome. She showed us around the ryokan. It was clean, warm, comfortable. The beds were like sleeping on clouds. The rooms were clean and it was wonderful sleeping in a traditional Japanese house. The shower was hot and powerful. The ryokan is located on a pretty road (Nakamachi Dori) with lots of interesting shops and restaurants. One of our favourite stays on this trip.
Nothing! Everything was excellent
