We very much us enjoyed our three night stay here. The situation is breathtaking, with views across the mountains and a beautiful, utterly charming 80 year old garden that goes up the hillside. The rooms were spacious, as were the public spaces - with lots of statues and pictures on show. The ryokan is quite a way from the station, but the owner runs a shuttle service to the Town Centre and to the local bus stop. The food was excellent, very tasty and exquisitely presented. The junior staff members were charming and eager to help. The building itself needs a little attention but the food, help from the staff and wonderful setting easily outweigh any small blemishes.

Staying at this ryokan was an unforgettable experience. Tucked away from the city, it offered stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere that felt like a true escape. The staff didn’t speak English, but their kindness and attentiveness made communication effortless—hospitality really is a universal language. Dinner and breakfast were out of this world—every dish was beautifully prepared and full of flavor, easily the best meals I’ve had in Japan. The onsen was the perfect way to unwind and soak in the serenity. If you’re looking for a genuine and tranquil ryokan experience, this is the place.

I was amazed with everything at Momoyama! We were quite surprised actually that a three star hotel was providing such exceptional food and service that you may expect from a more highly rated hotel. The service was kind, attentive, and overall really good. The food was 9 courses or so of food I would imagine a Japanese emperor would have eaten. It was tasty and the staff made the best effort to explain the menu to us and for us to have the best stay at the place.
That we didn't have the opportunity to say thank you to the chef personally, haha

Momoyama is nestled in the hills above Matsumoto. We stopped in at the Information kiosk at the train station and they called Momoyama and we were able to get a shuttle up to the hotel . Which is good because it was probably an hours walk away . The location is gorgeous . The hotel is a traditional ryokan . We both had a wonderful bath in the hot springs / onsen . Then a traditional dinner was served to us in our room . 8 courses , each unique and delicious . Our beds were made for us and we settled into a wonderful nights sleep . In the morning we had a wonderful breakfast in their reception area overlooking the city .. It was one of our best stays in Japan !
It would be difficult to go back and forth from the hotel to the town if you were just staying at the hotel and planning on that .

- The food was great. Breakfast might have been one of my most memorable meals during my trip. - The staff were very kind. - The room was clean and spacious.
- The outdoor baths were still in renovation during our stay. - We stayed during winter. Our room was warm but elsewhere was cold. - It is hard to get to without a car because it’s up in the mountains. Thankfully, we were able to ask them to pick us up and drop us off at the Matsumoto station. We called them with the help from the staff at the tourist information kiosk.

The Ryokan was great. Just be aware that the nearest bus stop is a 23-minute walk (the last 5 minutes to the Ryokan is really steep walk). The nice owner offers a free shuttle service daily at 10:00AM to Matsumoto station or Matsumoto castle. He even offered to pick us up at 16:00 at Matsumoto station. The food was amazing and the room was very spacious. We loved this Ryokan, and we definitely recommend it.

The breakfast & dinner is always great. The portion of food served is kind of a lot.! The staff was very attentive to our needs. Even if you do not ask for a lamp, they bring and put in your room in the next day!
If we can choose the volume of food served. Carrying the luggage down the hallway to our room, you need to use the stairs. Sliding doors was not smooth to use. Lighting in the sitting area watching the garden has poor lighting.

We had the half board option so amazing 9 course dinner and huge breakfast. Lovely setting amongst natural surroundings. Onsen facilities very relaxing. Room was huge and very comfortable. Free shuttle to and from accom much appreciated and needed as it's located a little way from the town centre. Great views from outside viewing area
No issues.

From the layout of the outdoor space to the traditional Ryokan room, everything was perfect. We couldn't ask for a more immersive experience to the Onsen culture and Japanese escapism. The staff was lovely. They even learned a few words of Portuguese and shared them with us. I hope all the future visitors of this Ryokan respect and help to preserve it.

This is a very traditional, small Ryokan. The owner very kindly prepared us an amazing kaiseki dinner, even though we hadn’t booked ahead. The meal was served in the adjacent tatami room because our room had already been set up with our futon beds. We looked out through the trees on the adjacent hillside, glimpsing views of the ancient tile roof of the adjacent temple, and listening to the chirping of cicadas, crickets, frogs, or some other unseen creatures. The dishes kept coming - I can’t remember them all. Our room had a private bath, but you have to go to the onset outside for the proper Japanese bath looking out over Matsumoto.
There was an odd smell when we first came in, but after visiting other places in Japan, I think it is the unfamiliar scent of tatami mats. It is a hot spring resort with a stream running inside the hotel. Because of the humidity and the fact we were there in the summer, when the air conditioning was on, it was a little bit musty.
