Location is excellent for the purpose of visiting Hida no Sato (Folk Village) and other places in Takyama; private shuttle service makes it practical for visiting Shirakawa-go as well. The lodging itself is charming - the experience of staying at a proper traditional ryokan with tatami floor, paper doors and futon beds is well worth the (very reasonable) price. Finally, I must recommend that guests also attend the proposed in-house meals - breakfast and dining experiences - because the food is superb and the service is impeccable and friendly. Highlight of my trip.

Nothing negative worth mentioning.

Looks a very traditional ryokan. Might be wrong but the multi-storey building is built using the "kumiki" (joinery-no nails) method. Thank goodness for small elevators to get yourself and your luggage to your room. There are private couple or family rooms for the onsen - which is great. Kaiseki dinner with Hida beef that practically melts in your mouth is heavenly. Murayama-san (2nd gen owner) speaks good English and makes the best chawanmushi dish we've eaten. The grilled whole iwana (cold freshwater fish) eaten from the stick needs to be savored.

Location is abit outside of town of Takayama although there is a shuttle service.

Very friendly staff. Facilities are very clean and neat. We liked our room very much! The regular (separate by gender) onsen was really good, but the one reserved for couples lacks maintenance. Overall we really liked our stay and felt at home.

The only downside is that the location is about 25 min walking from the train/bus station and the old town. Although the Ryokan has a shuttle that takes you to the station in the morning, you’ll probably end up walking a lot or taking taxis every now and then. The onsen for couples requires some maintenance.

Good sized room and very clean. Friendly staff who were very helpful, particularly with getting to and from the Ryokan. The room was warm and I was very comfortable.

Unfortunately although I had messaged to book a dinner prior to my arrival when I got there they were unable to offer the vegetarian option that they advised would be possible. However I was guided to a couple of restaurants - one being only 15metres away on the corner - which although very quiet was able to provide a vegetarian meal and some lovely local craft beer.

Location was very nice, quiet and peaceful, surrounded by nature. The ryokan rooms we had were spacious and very clean. Had all the required toiletries and facilities, working fridge to keep your items and good air conditioning system. The futon beds were super comfy and I slept like a baby each night. I like the tea set and cookies we received daily too. The Premium Kaiseki we booked for an evening dinner was exceptional. It was a very good experience and the food was also outstanding. The staff were great and very friendly. The Onsen was small but clean and had clear instructions on what you should/shouldn’t do. Free parking spaces available but can walk to the centre for about 30mins+ approx, a good way to explore the place on foot.

Would be great if there were more plugs for phone chargers. The stay was still amazing however.

The room was exquisitely designed, blending contemporary amenities with traditional Japanese aesthetics. The tatami floors complemented the elegant paper shoji screens, allowing soft, diffused light to fill the space. As for the dinner, it was a feast for both the eyes and the palate. Each dish was artfully arranged, showcasing vibrant colors and intricate presentations. The flavors were carefully balanced, with every bite revealing layers of taste that celebrated the finest ingredients. The experience was truly delightful, creating a perfect harmony between beauty and gastronomy.

I loved everything about this Ryokan. It is an old style building, but well kept, clean and cosy. it has multiple rooms but felt very intimate and private. It is located approx. 20- minutes away by foot from the city center and offers a quiet and peaceful retreat experience. The room we got (originally a triple room with a private bathroom) was actually an apartment with 2 separate rooms, a toilet and a bathroom, in addition to the hallway. We got the eastern exposure in one of the rooms and we enjoyed the sunrise over the Alps, an amazing view :-). The private bath was was great, we travelled as a family of 3 and could enjoy some relaxation in the private atmosphere. We ordered the extra breakfast and it was a feast. Everything was fresh, delicious and local. The staff (owners) were extremely helpful and welcoming. We only stayed one night but I really wished we had more time there and I would love to come back some day.

Large bedroom and a good sized sitting area with western chairs . Comfortable tatami beds and very traditional old family Ryokan run by Murayama San and his family. Very clean and the private onsen facilities for a couple are just what you need for an hour a day . The onsen facility for couples is very private and quiet and very relaxing . The views from two of the rooms are good . The food prepared by the owner was excellent quality , very good Hida beef, local fish , good standard sashimi, egg custard soup and several other interesting small dishes . Good selection of hot and cold sake .

We liked the location but the walk into Takayama was too steep for me because of my mobility problems but would be no problem for younger people with good walking capabilities. The Ruokan transportation is very good during the day and it is only 1000 yen for a taxi home from town in the evening. Murayama San is an excellent and very friendly host . Fair value for a good sized room .

First and only time on a ryokan, so I can't compare it to anything else. Mr. Murayama was the perfect host, welcoming, helpful and incredibly kind. He speaks English too, which is a bonus. Family run ryokan, with private rooms and private and shared bathrooms. Also private and public indoor onsen, that we made use of kindly. We tried the japanese breakfast one day and added a lot to the experience. The room was huge and beds comfortable. Despite being far from the centre, there's a free shuttle bus service that Mr Murayama himself provides. 10/10.

Not much to complain. The location is not ideal - it was a good 20-30 min walk from the station that it isn't particularly enjoyable. I see how this can be an inconvenience in colder months. The onsen felt a bit old, could do with some work.

I stayed here with my husband and it was exactly what we needed — peaceful, cozy, and with a warm atmosphere. The room was spotless, the bed incredibly comfortable, and we had a beautiful view. The staff were kind, attentive, and always ready to help with a smile. We felt welcome from the very first moment, and it was the perfect place to slow down, reconnect, and simply enjoy each other’s company. We’ll definitely come back.
