We're a travelling couple with a small child and our visit to Takayama was a highlight within Japan for us. The experience was made especially memorable with the exceptional hospitality provided while staying at Iroriyado Hidaya. The ryokan has limited capacity and therefore provides a very homely vibe with communal areas and facilities including a relaxing onsen. The spacious rooms provided plenty of privacy and comfort. Staff were courteous, helpful and respectful and accompanying us with our child. Optional breakfast is highly recommended. There are so many smaller and finer details about the facility and hospitality that made this stay a trip highlight.

Slightly out of town with about a pleasant and easy stroll approximately 20-25min from town. Short taxi ride, ~¥1000. Absolutely worth it for those who aren't dissuaded by this.

Highly recommend this place, best memory for our entire Japan trip !! The hospitality was beyond our imagination. The staff was extremely welcoming and friendly, although there was a language barrier. All of our requests/questions were quickly resolved. The welcoming snacks/tea/yukata wearing experience elevated the entire experience. The room size is big, and we had both a tatami and a super king-size bed in our room. Quiet room in a 100+ year old ryokan, but our room is not facing the main road. The breakfast spread was amazing, and it did not repeat itself on our multi-day stay. We knew about the shared shower facility before booking, so it was not an issue for us. A little far from the town centre, but we do not mind this, only <10 mins by taxi.

The stuff were all amazing, they welcome and shower us with free candy, helped us book dinner in a Great local place and tickets to shirakawa-go, the onsen was great and and the traditional breakfast was different every day and an exeptional experience by itself. The house is really cool and cozy. Its a bit far from the station (20 min by foot), but you do get to see a bit of the local town and you can allways take a bus. If you travel by car its really easy. All in all, amazing stay

Nothing. Go there and give them your money, they worth it.

Everything about Iroriyado Hidaya was charming. The ryokan/onsen is very traditional in look and feel - the rooms are very generously sized and the ambiance is amazing. We are a family of 4 adults, so booked 2 rooms, which worked very well. The staff are the most friendly and hospitable people who made us feel very welcome, especially Haruka and Sayuri (thank you so much again!). The on-site onsen was such a bonus, which we used morning and evening. There are no showers in the rooms, but this is not a problem at all. The futon beds were very comfortable. The Japanese breakfast each morning was outstanding - so well presented, with lots of variety and plenty to eat. It was the perfect way to start the day and one of the highlights. There are good restaurants within a 10 to 20 minute walk. It was also very quiet at night, which made for good sleeping. We rented a car so the free parking was appreciated and made getting around Takayama region so much easier.

the ryokan is a bit removed from where a visitor will want to be, having a car was an advantage although other guests did not seem to have a problem getting a taxi. We also walked to restaurants so not a problem for us, but others might find this inconvenient. Otherwise Iroriyado Hidaya was a great place to stay and we would do it again.

We're very happy that we selected Hidaya as our first ever ryokan experience. The staff was lovely, instantly made us feel at home and helped us to get the most of our short visit to Takayama (recommendations, taxi and restaurants booking, yukata rental and much, much more). The Japanese style breakfast was delicious and varied from day to day. The place is very charming and well maintained. The small hot bath was a very nice addition that we've used multiple times. It's located quite far from any attractions so a car/taxi is your best bet but it can be reached on foot within 10min from a nearby bus stop and around 30min from the historic center. Highly recommended! Takayama was definitely a highlight of our trip and Hidaya was big part of it. Thank you for your hospitality!

The only small issue is not very exciting view from the room - a road and some industrial buildings with mountains barely peaking behind.

A truly wonderful experience, not just a place to stay. 10/10, just book it. The staff could not be nicer or more helpful, and the array of cultural experiences they provide in addition to comfortable, clean, convenient rooms is truly above and beyond. They welcomed us so warmly, with treats for my children, and gave us great advice on what to do locally. The onsen experience was wonderful, and we enjoyed dressing in yukata as a family. My 6 year old was thrilled to learn origami as well. Truly a highlight of our Japan trip. Don’t hesitate, if it’s available for your dates, this is the place to go.

The only minor downside would be road noise, but what do you expect in a convenient location with traditional Japanese architecture? The staff kindly offered earplugs should we need them but we never did.

We were a bit unlucky and couldn't get a taxi, so had to walk for 15-20 minutes. When we arrived all hot and sweaty (and earlier than the check-in time), we were greeted with such care and love. I felt like I was being fussed over by a mum, who knows what you need to be comfortable. We were given cold tea to drink, towels to dry ourselves, and asked to sit in the air-coned room. Sayuri spent time with us going over the map of Takayama, recommending places to explore. Straight away, they whisked away our luggage, copied passports, and called us a taxi to explore the town before the check-in time. Other positives: - clean rooms - futon beds made for you - yukata hire and fitting - choice of incense for free - amazing Japanese breakfast - quiet and peaceful - onsen that wasn't very busy in September (so you could potentially have it all to yourself) - beautiful views Personally, I loved both Takayama and the ryokan, so this place will forever stay in my heart.

READ the FULL review The only downside is the ryokan's distance from the station and the town centre itself, but if you don't mind a little walk, you'll be fine. It was so worth it!

The staff here at Iroriyado Hidaya are AMAZING! We were warmly, kindly welcomed the moment we walked in and were treated like family the entire time we were there. We really appreciated the effort they went to in making us feel at home and their efforts with speaking & understanding English, as we know this is a very difficult language to learn. The Ryokan was old but beautifully maintained and laid out. The facilities were great, though we had cold days, the rooms stayed nice and warm. The only difficulty we faced was the location, as it wasn't very close to the train station and there isn't any public transport available. The Onsen was great, separate rooms for men & women which was good, and they include amenities such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, brushes and moisturiser. The breakfast experiences we had were fantastic, both from the delicious food and friendly service from the staff. It truely felt like a traditional, Ryokan experience and we loved every second of it! We highly recommend this accommodation and would absolutely stay here again!

The staff were so incredibly welcoming and kind when we arrived, sitting us by the fireplace with some lovely homemade matcha tea whilst they told us about the hotel and Takayama as a whole. The hotel was beautiful throughout with a genuine ryokan feel to everything, with tatami matting and futon bedding in our room. The staff even treated us to a bespoke kimono/yukata styling session one evening. Breakfast can be either Western or Japanese, we had the latter and it was excellent. Would highly recommend Iroriyado Hidaya to anyone visiting Takayama and wants to have the ryokan experience!

our favourite stay of our Japan trip!! this was a beautiful cozy ryokan just outside of old town Takayama that we absolutely loved! there weren’t many rooms (6 I think) so everything was very private and personalised. Each room was spacious with a irori (charcoal hearth area) and sleeping area. We loved the cute touches that the ryokan provided - free snacks, a variety of incense sticks to perfume your room, bringing hot charcoal to warm your room! Our host even wrote us a personalised card to welcome us to Takayama and folded an origami crane using paper with our country’s flag printed on it :’) The futons were also plush and sooo comfortable. We also really appreciated having a heated blanket under the table for cozy winter nights. The kaiseki breakfast was so hearty and delicious! You could really tell that everything was so lovingly prepared. The onsen was well maintained and of a comfortable temperature! Even though it was quite small, we hardly saw any other guests using it at the same time Special thanks to Sayuri and Haruka for being such amazing and kind hosts! They really went out of their way to welcome us and shared so many wonderful food recommendations in the area

Approx a 10 min drive from Takayama Location is in a more industrial area, but you’re staying indoors anyways!
