Although the location isn’t in the CBD area, it was very convenient — metro lines were nearby and more affordable than the JR line. The room was also more spacious than accommodations in the CBD, and at an even more affordable price. Cleanliness was consistently well-maintained. Fresh towels were provided daily in an eco-friendly bag hung on our door handle, and indoor slippers (shared with other guests) were available. Housekeeping was done quite frequently, and we were informed of the schedule upon check-in. I also appreciated the thoughtful touch of a shoe spray to keep our footwear fresh. Tanaka-san and his wife were incredibly hospitable. They kindly helped with our luggage, especially as we had to climb a few flights of stairs. Tanaka-san also offered helpful recommendations on local attractions and directions. There was a small pantry area where we could prepare cup noodles and enjoy complimentary milk tea, tea, and coffee. The room itself was comfortable — the pillow was soft, the blanket fluffy and cozy. A personal basin with a mirror and ample space for our toiletries was also available in the room. The shared shower and toilet facilities were clean, with designated toilet slippers provided. It’s worth noting that each floor has only one toilet per gender and one unisex shower cubicle. However, we were able to use the facilities on the floor below, and since we typically returned late, we never had to queue. Snacks were provided in the room and replenished during housekeeping. As a lovely gesture, Tanaka-san even gave us a souvenir (rice crackers) before we left! Overall, I highly recommend this place for its value, service, and amenities — especially if you're comfortable with shared bathroom facilities.

There was no hand soap in the toilet (I couldn't find one) though there is one in our own room

I had a fantastic stay at Oyado Kien Ryogoku. The location is perfect, with easy access to Asakusa Temple and Akihabara just two stations away, and only a 25-minute walk to the Skytree. The neighborhood is quiet, and the subway station is just 8 minutes on foot. Plus, the famous Sumo stadium and restaurant are only 10 minutes away. A 24-hour convenience store is conveniently located right across the street. The owner is a wonderful host, always ready to help and offer great recommendations. The room was spotless, and overall, the experience far exceeded our expectations. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Tokyo!

The hosts were very friendly and attentive. It felt like they wanted your trip to be as good as possible, and they offered personalized recommendations and advice if you had any questions. The property was well kept and the facilities clean. They now also have a laundry machine in the property, and they offered to handle my laundry if I was out the whole day. Even with shared bathroom/showers, I didn't have to wait to use those once. Generally, it always felt great to be back at this accommodation after a long day of touring Tokyo. I'd definitely want to stay here again next time.

The curtains were a bit short and leaked light into the room during the mornings. Would've appreciated if there were face wash available. Both are not a big deal though.

The owners were very kind and gracious throughout our stay and went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and to help with any questions that we had. The room was very comfortable and it is set in a lovely part of Tokyo. We discovered the scooters and e-bikes in the area a bit late, but they are also a fun way of getting about. Room service was thorough and facilities were very clean. Would definitely stay again.

It's not necessarily the easiest place to get to, but taxis and buses get you there and back again easily enough.

Host is very friendly, helpful and is able to converse in English Superb location, two convenience stores about 3 houses away in either direction, 8-10 minute walk from Ryogoku station and is within proximity of several museums and attractions including the Tokyo Skytree, National Sumo ring and the Sumida Hokusai museum. Well maintained and clean, towels are replaced daily, and laundry services are offered free of charge!

The shower facilities are small which may be problematic for some, but not for us. Communal bathroom and shower facilities, still not a problem for us but it maybe for others.

✅Amazing Location!!!!!!!! A Lawson (convenience store) is across the street & a Family Mart is 3 houses down (Yes, i counted) ✅Walking distance to TWO SUBWAY LINES! Ones on the tokyo metro line while the other is under JR lines! Perfection!! 🤩 ✅Bus stops within 5 minutes incase you want to save $$ and take a bus instead of the subway ✅STELLAR HOSTS! He answered every single question i had… some of them were albeit silly… 🫡Thankyou very much Mr. Tanaka-san ! Fresh towels every morning! Extremely clean spaces ! ✅AMENITIES?? I WANT TO TAKE THE BLANKETS HOME. THEY ARE SO FLUFFY, CLOUD-LIKE ETHEREAL SOFTNESS. The shampoos and conditioners were top tier 🥹 They.. tucked… my cat plush toy in like a baby while cleaning the room 🥹 I placed him ontop of the pillow and came back to find him snug under the blanket. I think that is enough to attest to the host’s hospitality. Even your plushies are taken care of!

There is nothing to not like. I’m already planning my next stay 🤩

Oyado Kien Ryogoku is a lovely ryokan in a quiet neighbourhood. It was about a 10-15min taxi journey from Tokyo Station, which was very handy after a long bus ride (and great not having to navigate the metro system with luggage). We deliberately chose a traditional room with tatami mats. While the room was on the small side for 4 people (15sm), the bedding was very comfortable and we enjoyed our stay. There are to convenience stores close by and we were able to walk to eateries.

The transport system is a good 8-10min walk. Not a big deal but something to be aware of. The ryokan is a little out of the way of the hustle and bustle of areas like Shinjuku, but that was part of the appeal to us.

👍 🏠 🛌 Exceptionally clean, convenient location, lovely staff. I stayed here for 2 nights as a solo traveller. I specifically wanted to stay in a quieter area of Tokyo and I found exactly that. I slept like a baby - it was a very relaxing stay. Despite the quiet location, the train was easily accessible and within easy walking distance. The staff was super nice, very responsive and always extremely welcoming and happy to help. My room was very clean and large for Tokyo standards. There’s also a cute little kitchen on the ground floor. It all had a very personal feel. Thank you for a great stay. I will be back for sure!

I have stayed in Ryogoku previously and returned as I like the area around the station and the quietness and ease of getting easily around Tokyo by either the Yamanote line or the Chuo Soba line, plus change at Asakasabashi to travel up to Sensoji. I also discovered thanks to useful map supplied by the host Tanako san that there is a Sumida City Loop bus which you can board at Hokusai Museum and do a circuit which takes you to Skytree, Asakasa and the return journey via the shopping centre that is Kinshicho.

Stairs may be difficult for unfit people, we 69 & 78 didn't have a problem and were grateful that Tanako san carried our bags upstairs for us. We were glad that we did not have extra large heavy bags.

Mr. Tanaka was our favorite part of our stay here, he was kind and attentive, he greeted us with a warm welcome to Tokyo and explained everything about our stay from the beginning, he helped us understand how to move around, provided printed maps with recommended places marked down with routes to take (restaurants, hotels, entertainment, airport), and he even gifted my nephew Mt Fuji shaped chocolates when we checked out. Everything was neatly clean, from the entrance, common spaces, bathroom and specially the room. Beds were comfortable and the room has a useful sink so you don’t have to go out every time to the shared bathroom (honorable mention to the shower which has excellent water pressure). Our towels were changed, trash taken out and provided with new toothbrushes on a daily basis. There are two convenience stores just a couple doors away.

It’s a little bit hard to get to the metro station as it is a little bit far away (we were traveling with a 7 y/o who got tired quickly, specially coming back after a day of walking around) about 15 and 20 minutes away by foot.
