Stylish period hotel with stunning interiors, surrounded by elevated landscaped gardens. An ideal location to explore Kuching's old town and riverside. The size of the room was adequate for a short stay. The breakfast such as it was was pretty awful (give it a miss) Otherwise a great hotel with period charm, helpful staff. We didn't get to use the outdoor pool but had an excellent evening meal at Kantin located within the hotel grounds.

The breakfasts were awful but there were plenty of eateries nearby.

I've stayed at the Marian many times and still regard it as the top pick in central Kuching. The building is fabulous, full of character, and the location can't be bettered. The lovely swimming pool is a big bonus too. Staff are kind and responsive.

The big thing to be aware of beforehand is that it is noisy. The slatted windows don't block out street noise, and thin walls mean you can often hear guests in adjacent rooms. This shouldn't put you off, in my view, just pack ear plugs. The breakfast (included) is basic though I never take it - there are excellent and very cheap breakfast options all around in local Indian, Malay and Chinese cafes.

The location is lovely, with some nice areas to sit and socialise outside the rooms. The views are good from the second floor. Close to restaurants and river front. The pool is clean and well kept. The hotel has a quaint colonial feeling which is a nice alternative to the standard chain hotels. The staff are super friendly and helpful.

A few minor issues with the room, but very quickly resolved by staff. The breakfast is toast or cereal, and was not available very early, but was enough to keep us going. There are a lot of steps to the rooms, so it is not great for people with limited mobility.

I have stayed here before, too. It's a place that hasn't undergone gentrification (yet), which i love. I also love the heritage and rustic vibes. But certain things don't have kept archaic--1) there could be a ramp to pull our luggage so that we don't have to carry them the long way 2) an elevator is a necessity, and not a luxury especially when you have steep stairs to the upper levels, 3) there should be proper signage to the parking 4) breakfast have plenty of scope to improve, and 5) noisy guests. The hotel can do more to ensure they attract the right crowd. There is a sign board in the rooms stating this. But it is in English. Perhaps, provide a Mandarin version too, and also state it clearly and firmly when guests sign in at the lobby.

The property itself is gorgeous! So many little details and history scattered around inside and the gardens outside and wrapped around the pool are lovely. Location is the best. Right near the waterfront, a Chinese temple and during my stay I had night markets 50m from the doorstep! Room was spacious with great aircon and bathroom. Bed was super comfy. No pool bar but you could just as easily get drinks from reception as needed. Breakfast is simple. Coffee, tea, juice, cereal and toast so if not to your liking many spots to eat right out the front door.

My room was very simple, but I really enjoyed my stay. I appreciated the a/c, wifi, shower, pool, , breakfast tables, and simple breakfast of toast and tea/coffee. The staff were excellent, very helpful and fine English. A couple of good vegetarian restaurants nearby, and good shapping on the bazaar street along the waterfront. Also I got a good haircut at Hair Plus in Merdaka Mall.

Location was perfect. Quiet for being right in old town. Surrounded by historic district was really great. Plenty of places to eat. Easy walk to the water. Nice pool. Restaurant Kantin next door was excellent. Not cheap but great. Staff super helpful. We really liked our stay very much.

There were lots of steps to access the rooms and no lift. This could be a deterrent for some. The floor is uneven and could be trip hazard. Point is, not a place for handicapped people. Unless they have a section I don’t know. The breakfast was super basic. Toast and cereal. Fine by me. I don’t care about breakfast much. Nice place to sit.

The building is beautiful, and the location is perfect. Was able to see all the main sites on foot. It was an added bonus being able to have a pool. The staff were also super nice and helpful.

The stairs, but I knew beforehand and was mentally prepared. They were better than expected and there were alternative routes - the charm and location of the property out weighed the stair situation. Plus a lift would ruin the authenticity.

Location was very central so easy access to attractions and restaurants. It had a pool. Efficient air conditioning. Staff generally helpful.

Had to ask for help with our suitcases up all the steps to our room. The pool was cloudy but ok to swim in. Basic breakfast of toast or cereal which was ok but it would’ve been nice to have some fresh fruit occasionally and some knives to spread the butter and jam on the toast.

It is just strategically located in the heart of old Kuching. A short walking distance to Chinatown (Wayang Street), the Kuching waterfront, Padang Merdeka and the Sarawak Museum. The hotel itself has some heritage history to it and has a feel of a museum, being built at the time of the 3rd Rajah Brooke.

The number of stairs from the entrance to the rooms (especially if you're placed at the 2nd and 3rd floors) might be a bit cumbersome for senior travelers.
