Location was fabulous - easily walkable to everything in the town center, immediately opposite the train station and bus stops for easy connections to Schiphol airport, Amsterdam and many surrounding cities. I used it as a base for visits to Haarlem, Leiden, Amsterdam and Utrecht. It was a much quieter alternative to Amsterdam and I’m so glad I decided to stay here. I wish I’d been able to stay longer so that I could visit even more places. The common hotel spaces were lovely for working, reading, catching up on emails, and grabbing a drink or bite to eat for supper. This was an unexpected bonus! Staff were all lovely and helpful as well.

The only negative I had was a periodic sewer smell in the bathroom. It wasn’t constant but was noticeable at times.

The triple room was comfortable, nicely furnished and well-equipped. It had everything we needed. Breakfast was absolutely delicious. There was a great selection of cereals and savouries; so much to choose from and all very tasty and great quality. It was probably one of the best buffets for choice and quality that I have experienced in the last couple of years of travelling. The location was fabulous; so convenient for the station. Bike shops just nearby. Walking distance to the city centre, shops, restaurants; it couldn't be better. Fantastic to have a garage to be able to store bikes safely overnight. so convenient.

Such a small thing but In the room: the pillows were horrible -! They were too bulky and therefore difficult to get your head onto. Would have preferred a greater selection of tea bags, fresh milk for English tea-drinkers and mugs rather than small cups. The price per night wasn't cheap, but it was very good value for money.

Perfect location, right near the main train station. and buses. And the room was very quite. Very easy to get to Amsterdam by train, or lots of other locations around the Nederland's. Haarlem is a great town and we will return again. Great places to eat and most are very reasonably priced. We drove from the Hoek of Holland to Haarlem and pre paid for the secure car park for 48 hours. £29.00. (£60 if not pre paid!) Then about a two min walk from carpark to hotel. When we go again will get the train from the ferry to Haarlem. Will be much easier than driving! Hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel bar was very relaxing and comfortable.

Cant think of anything. Apart from driving there. Next time we will take the train!

Very comfortable bed. Quite large, modern and nicely-decorated room. Good size bathroom. Just across from the station, but extremely quiet. I slept very well. Good value for money.

Overall very happy, but if I have to point out improvement opportunities: no door / curtain to the shower so the bathroom was basically flooded after a shower. Two separate comforters for the double bed (some people might like that, I don't). Chose a double bed option on Booking .com which I think sent a message to the hotel asking for a double bed, response was a polite but thoroughly unhelpful "yes you can get it if it's available" -- not a big deal but just awkward.

This hotel was good value, the room I had felt fairly new, it was well looked after, clean and comfortable and had a nice bathroom with bath tub. Staff were always friendly and helpful. It has a nice breakfast/bar area. Located right next to the train station which made it really easy to get in and out of the city, but there was no street noise and felt like a safe area. Only a 10 min walk to the town centre. Haarlem itself is a beautiful town and a great way to avoid the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam itself

Nothing - I thought it would be fairly basic and a bit drab but it exceeded my expectations, a lovely hotel

Lovely hotel in excellent location. Check in was pleasant as was check out, able to store bags while visiting museums. Breakfast was very good and competitively priced. We had an interior room with window that opened(!) onto inner courtyard. Fresh air but no noise.

Bathroom while large and very well equipped had a large shower that flooded the rest of the floor. Front desk would look into it. We chose a 4 person room instead of a three ( there were 3 of us) as it was not guarantied that we wouldn’t get two beds and a roll-out third. Did result in large nice room at small extra cost.

I stayed here a few times over the past years and will never stay anywhere else. The hotel is perfectly located opposite the train station. The bus to and from Schiphol Airport also stops on the square in front of the hotel. Rooms are comfortable and clean as well as the bathrooms. And my absolute favourite product, Rituals, are now available in the bathrooms. What a luxury. But the best is the breakfast room where you can relax any time during the day. The room is lovely and it is so nice to sit there in late afternoon with a coffee or glass of wine and look out onto the streets and square. I'm lucky enough to return in December with my daughter. Looking forward to our stay and to attend the Christmas market. The hotel is a 10 minute walk from the main square and the lovely St Bavo church.

The location of the hotel is perfect, right next to Haarlem Central Station. The overall look of the hotel is lovely, especially the dining area. We didn't have any meals at the hotel as we like to eat out in Haarlem area whenever we are there. The room we booked slept 4, very comfortable & perfect for us. Coffee machine & fridge within room also. I contacted the hotel prior to our stay to ask if they could help with putting something birthday related in our room, as people from our group were celebrating their birthdays. The hotel kindly gave us a card with a lovely little message inside & a little assortment of cakes. This was such a nice touch. Myself & my partner have been to Haarlem a few times now, stayed in a few different places. I honestly think we will be staying at the Hotel Lion D'Or from now on in the future. It really exceeded any expectations I had. Thank you again to the kind & helpful staff, you made our stay the best! :)

March 2024

We booked a family (quadruple) room for our family vacation to the Netherlands. Our room had a balcony and a bathtub, which were both pleasant surprises. The beds were decently comfortable and the room had plenty of storage for a family of 4 to unpack. Our particular room was towards the back of the hotel and was situated such that we had no neighbors. Our door opened to the lift, but we didn't hear it at all. Breakfast is pretty basic, but has a good selection of items to choose from. Staff were polite and generally friendly. Overall the hotel was clean and felt really nice. The location is perfect! Being able to walk out the front door and catch a train or bus was SO convenient. This made it easy for us to use Haarlem as our base of operations for our whole vacation.

The refrigerator in our room did not work and was not able to be fixed after reporting to the front desk. That limited our options for grocery shopping and stocking our room. As another reviewer noted, the rooms can get warm and stuffy. There are heaters, but no air conditioning. We had to sleep every night with windows and/or the door to our balcony open. Since we were situated in the back of the hotel that was no problem, but I could see rooms towards the front of the hotel having problems doing that due to noise.

The hotel has an old world charm, and is very well maintained in spite of it's considerable age. Our family room was a lovely size, with all the comforts one could hope for in this price range, We loved everything about the hotel, from the staff, to the location, to the lovely room and bathroom, to the complimentary tea and coffee, to the very good breakfast, which included a much appreciated fresh orange juice!

We couldn't really find fault at all. The only suggestion we would make is that a toilet brush in the bathroom would be very useful.
