Nice quiet village. Take a walk down Harbour Road. You'll come to a small forest. Walk through it. Takes 5 minutes, then you'll catch sight of the coast. The view is extraordinary. It's also the home of the Flagstone factory ruins complex. All very interesting and haunting. The pier is very unusual with several abandoned boats and countless lobster baskets strewn about. It feels a bit like the land that time forgot. Ultimately, it's a very attractive harbour and a brief look into a time long since forgotten.

My room's bathroom sink gave off a mild stagnant water smell.

Fantastic find on the NC500. Super comfy beds and bedding. We ate in the bar in the evening (dogs are allowed in the bar area but not the restaurant, but they’re similar in size and style) the food was great, really well presented, good choice with some local sourcing and all yummy. Breakfast was buffet style with loads of choice including lots of fresh fruit, cold options and hot options. It was a brilliant stay.

Only small issue was that the car park is quite small and was full when we arrived around 6pm. It wasn’t too much of an issue though as we unloaded then parked in the free car park on the other side of the main road.

All staff are very friendly, approachable and professional. Great location Very clean

My shower recess was tiny and made showering difficult. However, my sister had a much bigger shower so it is the luck of the draw. The communication regarding the evening meal (a Saturday evening) was lost in the Booking.com system. Therefore, on arrival they could only provide a meal at 2000 which was too late for us (so cheese and biscuits for me) My suggestion is make sure that you have clearly communicated all your needs. It is a very popular hotel and I suspect booked out regularly.

I thought mostly it was great. My only complaint is that I was moved to the Pentland hotel in Thurso and there was no compilatory parking. this was one of the reasons for booking. the bed was the comfiest of all three hotels that we stayed at. Well done on that. Great night's sleep. Wish I could have laid in longer, but sadly, had to leave before 9 am to avoid parking ticket.

Bathroom fittings were a bit ancient - weak flow on shower. Though I appreciate that its an old building. The bar was lit up like Tesco which always makes me bulk a bit, since I'm really a fan of subtle lighting and am not into glare.

The friendliest and most helpful staff, clean, well sized rooms. This hotel is really dog friendly - cuddles, bowls, treats and blanket are provided and your furry friend can be with you for breakfast and dinner. Dinner is super yummy and plentiful. The bar is well stocked, and the breakfast buffet can hardly be outperformed. Fresh fruit and a good choice of hot and sweet delicacies. Parking Spaces are sufficient and for free. Located between Thurso / Scrabster and St Gills it’s the ideal stopover for a trip to or from Orkney! We’re looking forward to our next visit.

Breakfast was the star = properly tasty, seemed really home-cooked, not at all generic like so many hotel breakfasts nowadays, with the haggis a real treat! The character of the place was lovely, especially the library Nice bar as well after dinner Very good value for money for a twin room with breakfast Parking fine too

Showers weak At breakfast veggie options should have different serving spoons to meat ones Ceiling Lights at the bar later in the evening should be turned down a bit as quite bright, and there were more atmospheric lights that could have made the bar feel more inviting.

This was so far the cheapest and best hotel I had on my 13 day journey through Scotland. Very clean rooms-I also told the cleaner she’s doing a great job. The room was cozy and comfortable. It’s well-connected by bus if you don’t reach by car, 2 mins walk. It’s close to many points of attraction in Castletown-the flagstone abandoned village factory, as well as the northernmost tip of mainland UK, as well as a short bus trip to John O Great. The staff is sweet and accommodating and I definitely appreciated the choice of fruit for breakfast, after having had a lot of greasy breakfasts before. It is also close to a supermarket Spar, 2 mins walk.

What a great hotel. The staff are outstanding, genuinely friendly, and very helpful. What really stood out, though, was the food. The restaurant is roomy, and the menu had a little bit of something for everyone. Having been on the road for the last 4 weeks, eating out every night was becoming a chore. The Castletown hotel gave me the best meal I'd had so far. It was fresh, tasty, and imagine this. . . hot! I think this hotel has a lot of things going for it, and this is because of a great team of staff, both front of house and behind the scenes. It is great value, with honestly priced food and drink. Do yourself a favour, make the effort to stay, or just pop in for their food. You will not be disappointed.

I only stayed one night 😌

After a long drive and chilly visit to John O'Groats it was lovely to walk into a pre-heated, warm bedroom. There was a clean blanket, white fluffy towel, bowl and three treats to welcome my dog, which was so nice. The food was good, I counted seven different vegetables accompanying my chicken! Friendly, helpful staff and someone ensite overnight.

If hotels were portable I'd take this one with me everywhere I went. But maybe just have lower light switches for the bed lights as difficult to reach unless sitting upright!

Location good, food good. I have stayed at this hotel on previous occasions so new what to expect. Evening meal on 1st night was good, food hot and appetising.

The 2nd nights stay there was a private function on, which impacted on us not being able to have an evening meal in the hotel. We were not informed of this until we got back to the hotel late afternoon, so had to make last minute alternative arrangements and although the area is nice not many alternatives too choose from.
