I liked the convenient location and the spacious, comfortable room. This quirky double room had a bathroom perched above the bedroom itself, in the attic. The food in the attached restaurant was excellent and the service good.

Unfortunately, I was there on a hot summer Saturday and the carnage in the street outside and under my (necessarily) open window, into the small hours, had to be heard to be believed. However, this was not just from customers at The Forresters but also from the Teeside Hotel opposite. Not great for an early start along the Pennine Way. I'm not blaming The Forresters. Just be aware of the possibility. Maybe mid-week would be fine? It seems a shame that the Forresters cannot provide a breakfast.

Lovely friendly welcome, nicely decorated room and comfy bed. Bath and shower both fantastic with lashings of hot water. Ensuite was generously proportioned, light and airy. The restaurant serves delicious French food, plus the usual bangers 'n' burgers. We had the chicken tikka masala curry and boeuf borguignon main courses - beef was lovely and tender, red wine sauce was amazing. Fantastic location, right in the village centre, a short walk from coffee shops, supermarket (surprisingly well stocked) cafes and delightful village green. There's free parking round the back of the hotel but there were spaces in the road outside every day we were there. No parking restrictions. It's a family-run hotel, and they are all very welcoming, I would say outgoing characters. This is not part of a chain.

Furniture in the bedroom was a bit tired; wobbly wardrobe and suitcase stand that would put a Strictly competitor to shame with its moves! The rooms are above the restaurant and bar. The bar was extremely lively on the 3 nights I was there, with a bunch of well tanked-up blokes shouting in that special male "weyyy - o - way - o - wayyyy!!" voice that's only used at football matches and when drunk. Lovely lads I'm sure, but it went on until about 1am on all 3 nights, and sound insulation in the rooms is non-existent. Pack your earplugs! Rooms 5 to 8 are over the restaurant, with 7 and 8 being furthest from the bar noise. Rooms 1 - 4 are directly over the bar so even noisier.

The service you are offered in this establishment can only be described as excellence in my opinion. I came upon this place after a month long stay in hospital due to a back injury I sustained almost 20 years ago. The staff here each in their own way have aided in my recovery and I cannot thank each of them enough for their support, trust and kindness. I have not needed a single pain killer for my lower back since. I am not going to comment about the cleanliness, the beds, the rooms, the location etc. Come and see for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

Nothing to dislike. If you do not like music, laughter and a few alcoholic beverages on an evening then this place is likely not for you.

Friendly staff , reasonable size room. A dog bed was supplied ,which a first......meant we had less to take in with us,also easy to walk straight from the door early mornings. Parked easily just outside . Good location for tripping around The restuarant accomodated even though we hadn't booked and it was well worth eating there. Good freshly cooked local foods.

Slightly disappointing breakfast not served but we knew that, so took our own and we are up earlier than some people as we have a dog . We wondered if if could be noisy when with a busy pub, but when we stayed it was ok

Beautiful room. Sort of mezzanine floor with lovely upstairs private shower room Central location. Pleasant bar. Food looked very good but we’d already decided to use the fish and chip shop so didn’t try it. Car park at the rear. Choice of local cafes for breakfast

Only criticism was lack of sound proofing making sleep a bit disjointed. Old building. It happens. Depends who’s staying in nearby rooms

Was a really nice stay. Room was excellent and perfect for a lone traveller. I sent a message earlier in the day and this was noted when I arrived which is good and always gives you confidence for future stays as they are attentive to changing circumstances. great location in town.

The only reason I did not put full marks for value for money was the fact that no breakfast was supplied. I didn't realise this at the time of booking (my fault I know) but for the money, at least a croissant or two with juice could have been supplied to the room.

It is popular French restaurant with a pub, if you are looking for the quiet, peaceful, serenity of a Buddhist trappist Monastery half way up a mountain in Tibet, then it may not be for you however. If you enjoy a regular pub with friendly local characters then you will enjoy yourself.

Perfect location for walking and sight seeing. Price was cheap enough for our liking. Staff pleasant enought.

Downside of staying in a pub is the noise on an evening which kept us awake one night. Requested delux bed which I assumed would be longer but turned out to be two singles put together so wider. Over mattress was in need of renewal as worn in centre meaning I slept in a deep. Room on the whole was clean and housekeeper very good, my concern was pee stain downside of toilet on wall. Extractor fan in bathroom didn't work due to buildup of dust and muck.

Excellent place to stay on route to Scotland & not far off the A66, nice pub, great food in the restaurant & quiet village... well once the pub had shut & singers went home just after midnight, but we weren't bothered as we was on a chilling last minute getaway

Nothing really.. the noise from a group of excited wedding girls laughing & reminiscing was right below my room, but hey, it didn't go on all night, they had a wedding to attend so no drama

Bar staff, Karen etc.friendly and informative. Room was small but had everything in fact more than others in terms of coffee sachets, toiletries.

Drop your bags at the front of the hotel unless you come equipped with your own Nepalese Sherpa to navigate the very steep and dodgy stairs from the rear car park. Shame the restaurant was closed and we had to eat at the soulless place across the road.
