Location is excellent.it is a very old hotel and retains most of it character. As an out of towner, I went to school in Shrewsbury I had aspired to staying and having dinner here. Ella at early evening check is was absolutely excellent. Calm patient, helpful friendly, multi tasking and achieved an acceptable solution. Breakfast food and staff also excellent.

Dissapointed Dinner wasn't possible as chef had an unavoidable family emergency that's understandable. But staff refused to organise an additional charge room updrade, 24 hours before check-in and again three or four hours before check-in. So at check-in the only upgrade (from a really pokey twin room to a simple double), on offer for +£70 was 4 poster bed and roll top bath that I had refused earlier in the day. Ella eventually telephoned her manager a found a simple double as I'd requested 24hrs previously. Unnecessary stress for all. Private parking £10 failed to work despite registering at reception we were charged £15.50. Would have been better and less stress in the multi storey.

The hotel is old but it should review its cleaning rota to include more frequent dusting of doorframes, wooden panelling, skirting boards, picture frames etc. Rooms should include a toilet brush and there should be more than one toilet roll in the bathroom. Our room No 1 was quite cold in the evenings as the heating was not on nor was there any spare blankets. I have a bad knee and use a walking stick but the lift was out of order for the whole duration of our stay.

Location was excellent. The setting was beautiful.

One way system was confusing-needed more information on how to get to and from hotel by car. Cooked breakfast was poor. Couldn't cook poached eggs. How they can overcook the yolk and yet undercook the white is beyond me. Also grilled tomatoes werent grilled-they were barely heated.

Breakfast was excellent. Room was good - i was expecting a single room but got a small double. One problem with room is that the light switch was not close enuf to the bed i had to get out of bed to switch the light off. Also an outside bar area at the back below my window meant some noise wen i was trying to sleep with the window open- wen i shut the window this was no longer a problem (but i do like to sleep with open window- ah well!) The location could not have been better -very central but not on the main street so no noise from any traffic or revellers.

We spent three nights at the hotel and found it outstanding. Our room was situated at the rear of the hotel and was exceedingly quiet. The bathroom had clearly been recently refurbished, was clean, well-illuminated and had both a standalone bath, and large power shower. The staff were courteous, helpful and friendly throughout. Breakfast was excellent, offering both continental buffet and cooked options. The historic restaurant offered an excellent menu alongside a lighter bar menu. The patron lounge was comfortable.

No hotel is perfect, and we had some small niggles: we missed any sort of cheese in the buffet; a magnifying mirror in the bathroom would have been useful as too would a room safe for laptop, iPad, passport or cash. And a final comment, pertinent to almost all hotels nowadays, why can’t rooms have better lighting for those who actually like to read?

We stayed in a Standard Double Room. This was a large room with a large comfortable bed and good size ensuite. The room was quite comfortable with room for chair to watch TV. The room had a view over the outside plaza area. This was an exceptionally good hotel bedroom. The quiet location in the centre of Shrewsbury is unsurpassed. The staff were very welcoming and very helpful. Thank you. We had breakfast each morning and the menu was broad and the food was delicious. The dining room staff were very efficient and helpful. The lounge bar was a lovely place to sit and read, chat (or as we were fortunate - to listen to guitarist practise their repertoire. A beautiful evening!) We had previously stayed in apartment accommodation in Shrewsbury not really wanting to be in a smallish hotel room. The Prince Rupert was certainly not that. Greta place to stay and next we visit Shrewsbury we will stay in the Prince Rupert.

This is a fabulous place to stay, right in the very heart of Shrewsbury. Parking was available, and reasonable, which is a huge advantage in this town. The hotel is old (obviously - the building dates back to at least the 1600s) but very well cared for. The staff are friendly and very competent and helpful. Our room was spacious and very comfortable, with a lovely bathroom. Breakfast was included and was fabulous - so much choice. But the hotel's biggest advantage is its position. To be able to walk out and be right in the centre was brilliant. After a long morning tramping the cobblestones, we were able to pop back, have a cuppa, put our feet up then go back out again two or three times. If I'm ever fortunate enough to get back to Shrewsbury, I'll definitely stay here again.

I really can't think of anything! It was a bit expensive, but more than worth it.
