Staff absolutely lovely - especially letting me in to see the historic bedroom used by Charles Dickens! Breakfast was very good, perfect poached eggs and lots of choices, again staff were lovely and the room and table setting very nicely laid out. The bedroom was okay and reflected the reasonable price. Hotel clean, very good location.
Mattress too soft for my taste, but that's a personal preference. Room was very hot and the window didn't open but fortunately I found a plug-in fan in the wardrobe. No hairdryer. Not a good view from the bedroom (looked out at fire escape and another wall of the building) but that is to be expected as it was a cheaper single person room.

Great choice at breakfast time - they catered for everyone
The hotel is obviously old, but it is very dated in decor/carpeting etc. Our room was very nice and had obviously been refurbished (room 105 - lucky for us we were only a few steps up to the first floor, glad we weren't any higher as there is no lift!) There was no bar (being used as an extra breakfast room during our stay), Overall, there was a definite lack of cleanliness - except for our bedroom, that was immaculate). Most doors were glazed and were full of finger marks. Paintwork scratched and carpets worn and tired-looking.

Food, staff, room and location. The breakfast was plentiful and cooked beautifully. The room was comfortable and clean and was serviced daily. Plenty of tea and coffee etc. All the staff were friendly and the location was brilliant. You are right in the midst of the town centre with easy access to shops, churches and other areas of interest.
The general areas are quite jaded, but there are some beautiful features of this grade one building. There's lots of potential and if you can see past the faded and worn corridors you will have a comfortable stay. We have stayed here on several occasions. P.s. We often stay in 5 star hotels and although The Lion's interior obviously isn't as luxurious the staff and breakfast are just as good. Thanks, we had a lovely stay

I stayed here with my husband, and it was the ideal getaway! The room was lovely and clean. The bed was roomy, with a very comfy mattress. The room was bright and airy with tasteful decoration and colour schemes. There were 3 super comfy, cosy leather armchairs there, too. There was even a second bathroom! The hotel was so steeped in history, too. Lots of famous people have stayed there - Charles Dickens and Paganini included.
There was nothing at all we didn't like, but we felt the room could be enhanced by having a second toilet in the second bathroom.

Beautiful central hotel with charm, history and friendly staff. Very welcoming and dog friendly. Breakfast was great (and they gave our dog a sausage!) and the room was spacious and comfortable. Parking was available (although it fills up quickly!) and is a bargain for £5 for hotel guests. It was £10 for our dog to stay the night. Well worth the money as the location and facilities were great for a quick stay after exploring Long Mynd and having a few drinks in Shrewsbury. We will be back!
Few issues due to it being an old hotel but definitely not a deal-breaker. Walls are a bit thin and easy to hear people moving around above you. We didn't have enough hot water for both of us to shower one after the other. Mentioned it when we checked out and they were apologetic and explained that there seemed to be an issue with the boilers at the moment. If we stayed for more than one night this would have been a bigger issue, but it was manageable for our stay.

Lovely room, building, location, breakfast and cleanliness excellent. Reasonable bathroom. Marvelous staff. We enjoyed our visit.
Parking on site was limited, but several long stay large car parks were not far away. The bathroom and hotel were a little tired, but everything worked as it should. The double bed was small by modern standards, but a period feature. The fire doors and room doors banged if people didn't take care closing them. We had traffic noise as we were on the front of the hotel, so very loud motorbikes were a nuisance.

The Hotel was very nice, it was a very old hotel from 12th century which kept its character... The room 101 was very nice and spacious with an excellent view of the main street. It was a good location to explore the city of Shrewsbury. The breakfast was very good, large selection of continental and cooked breakfast.
Room was very warm at times so had a fan which we put on a lot to keep it cool, and windows would only open a small amount, which would of helped kept the room cool if they opened up all the way. One improvement I thought is there was no place to socialise. so I think if they had a room with a TV and maybe a bar open for customers then this would bring more money in the hotel and customers would know there would be a place you could watch TV out of your room and socialise maybe with other guest.

This is a really historic building right in the heart of Shrewsbury and amazing value for money. Every member of staff we encountered was exceptionally helpful, the room was spotlessly clean, the bed super comfortable and breakfast was very good.i slept straight through for eight hours. My friends and I loved our stay here. I will absolutely return to this hotel.
The decor and bathrooms areis are quite dated and the carpets in the corridors fairly worn, but everything was beautifully clean and the carpet in the bedroom looked brand new. The TV was small, but I came to see Shrewsbury, not to watch television. I'd much rather stay in amazing buildings like this than identikit bland modern hotel rooms. This hotel oozes history!.

Staff were brilliant with my son and his friends, and looked after them very well. They helped out when my son's phone wouldn't work and also helped when the group became separated and two didn't have a room key to gain access and check on my son. The location was perfect for a night out in Shrewsbury and the group especially enjoyed the wide range of breakfast choices available.
Not the hotel's issue, but when booking through Booking.com I requested a twin rather than a double if possible. I had a reply from Booking.com to say this had been agreed, but then the hotel contacted me to say they couldn't change the room as I hadn't booked direct. A twin room was available, but they said I'd need to ring Booking.com. However when I rang Booking.com it wasn't possible to change. I would ask that messages saying a request has been granted are not sent out, rather a please check with us message. That way I could have had the opportunity to alter the booking before the twin room was taken. Either that or give hotels the autonomy to make a simple change like this, where it is possible

gorgeous old hotel with some rather lovely, historic features. Breakfast was great value and my poached eggs were perfection. Absolutely commend every member of staff I encountered. All seemed very young and enthusiastic; helpfully friendly and chatty and even kindly looked after my elderly parents as I took a quick dash around the city walls after checkout. Everyone seemed so proud of their work and enjoyed helping us.
The interior is a little dated in places and have not been refreshed since the 80s judging by the decor. A weird lack of double glazing (not historical windows) meant it was a wee bit draughty. The steps (there are many as the whole site is a warren of passages and alleys) are numerous and a little discombobulating as you wend your way up and down several different flights. Sign posts and room numbers were a little baffling initially. The hotel is situated in the ancient part of town with a lively night life just below in the alley. Dawn chorus of drunken revellers aside it wasn't that noisy all things considered.
