As comfy a hotel as I've stayed in for awhile. Professional, friendly staff. Small thoughtful touches. Yes, it is a tiny bit tatty, but hardly noticeable, excusable at this price and given the size and history of the place. Treat yourself and imagine being a Victorian industrialist for your stay.

The room was spacious and comfortable. Plenty of car parking spaces available. We choose this hotel when we visit The Lake District as Grange-Over-Sands is a pleasant town and is located near to Cark / Flookburgh when we go skydiving, Lake Windermere and and only some 45 - 60 mins away from the numerous mountain walks further north, e.g. Scafell Pike and Helvellyn. The hotel is also dog friendly and has a very convenient 20 min dog walk around the adjacent woodlands for those early mornings and late evenings us dog walkers have to endure !
The general decor of the hotel and rooms is fairly 'tired' looking ... certainly in need of a freshen-up in the near future. The Reception and Bar staff are welcoming, friendly and accommodating but the Restaurant staff can be a little 'blunt' shall we say !

Staff were very friendly and helpful. Hotel decor is very tired, but it looks like works are ongoing to maintain. Bedroom wallpaper was peeling, but I'm not marking it down for that because everything was so clean. The mattress in my single room was incredibly comfy, and the blackout curtains were a treat. It's probably the best nights sleep I've had in ages!!
Probably because I didn't realise it wasn't that close to where I wanted to reach and the distance away shown on booking . Com is as the crow flies. My bad for not google mapping it. Taxis wouldn't come at all, and I was told not to bother as they are unreliable anyway. Didn't spoil my stay, though I just rearranged what I was going to do.

Beautiful old grand yet faded hotel. Will have been magnificent in its day. Whilst the decor needs updating (ripped wallpaper and chipped paint, and very dated -not original- furniture) and a bit of work needed to save the original windows, it's still an impressive place and very comfortable and relaxed. Would cost a fortune to do up. Grounds beautiful, complete with resident peacock. Location lovely, short walk from the station along the shoreline and up a long wooded private driveway. Directly opposite a footbridge taking you over the train tracks to the shore. Was ideal to watch the solstice sunrise.
The bath didn't drain well. A better range of teabags would have been nice, but with the solstice heatwave, not much need.

Good location with lovely views over the bay and easy to walk into Grange over Sands. Can see the effort being made to refurbish/modernise common areas like the bar which was very nice and the lobby etc. Didn't eat in the restaurant as we had our dog with us but the menu looked good.
Room was dated but clean and comfortable with a nice view. The room in the bar you were allowed with the dog is quite enclosed so felt a bit cut off later on in the evening when they had a live singer in the main bar and we were the only ones in the 'dog room'. Would be nice if the gardens were done up a bit as it would be a lovely space to spend time

I liked the peace and tranquillity of the surrounding woodlands and view over the golf course towards the sea, also the magnificent peacock named Earnie that lives within the grounds. A leisurely 15 minute walk takes you along the promenade into town.
There wasn't anything to dislike. It was a nice clean hotel with pleasant staff in a very quiet, peaceful location. Being an old hotel, it has great character, the exterior paintwork needs a lot of work but I can understand expenditure has to be based on income, a difficult task for the owners. Some 40 years ago I did work as a Painter and Decorator at the hotel so I have spent many happy days at the Cumbria Grand Hotel.

Hotel was lovely and clean. It's one of the most friendly hotels we have stayed in. The meals were very good, including afternoon sandwiches. There's a lovely woodland walk which our dog thoroughly enjoyed. The promenade is just across the road which you can walk along to the shops.
I couldn't fault anything, although, there is a long drive up a hill to the hotel from the main road which some of the older customers found a problem with as they came by train and couldn't get a taxi to take them to the hotel with their bags, so had to manage themselves.

The building is charming and set in some really lovely grounds. It has a warm and friendly ambience. All staff from reception to serving are lovely. Good sized, twin room with a bath and a shower. Good view of the grounds and a built in window seat. Really comfortable bed. Bedding and towels really clean and soft. The TV was also great - full working order with Freeview channels all tuned in. The Wi-Fi signal was strong in the room and throughout. Even with a full dining room, service was incredibly quick. Water and bread rolls were on the table. The portions were VERY generous. As you can then help yourself to tea or coffee you can choose to drink them in the dining room or take elsewhere. At just under £30 (Bread roll, water, starter, main, dessert, hot drink) it was really good value. A good choice at breakfast. Tea or coffee, juice, toast, fruit, yoghurt, cereals, croissant and cooked breakfast. Everything was fresh and delicious. Outside of the hotel, there is a lovely walk to the promenade which is so peaceful and tranquil.
I don't really want to pick any holes as we had such a lovely stay. It is a little tired in places and it's not ultra-sparkling clean but it's certainly not dirty either. Couldn't fault it otherwise.

Beautiful hotel. Room was upgraded free of charge. Comfortable bed and a nice size. Very happy this hotel hasn't been sullied by a constant air conditioning/ventilation rumble like many have these days. Location is good. Wonderfully quiet as it borders a nature reserve. Lovely balcony. Friendly staff.
It wasn't very clean. It looked like there had been cats or dogs in my room prior and the carpet was quite hairy. The old iron radiators were also dirty throughout - especially noticeable in the dining room where they're covered in dust and food debris.

A very good sized room, with all the usual comforts, which was kept warm throughout our November stay. The public areas were very good and welcoming, a good bar area and relaxing seating areas, and a very good restaurant area. The staff service was excellent throughout our stay, you cannot fault the service received and their friendliness. This was an excellent winter break for a few days relaxation in a good community, and within easy reach of the more famous areas of the Lake District National Park. We had good food throughout our stay for both breakfast and our evening meals. We would recommend this hotel to family and friends.
We were aware before booking that there were reports of the building looking tired in places and requiring some updates. This is true, but the building is very old and majestic, a wonderful old building in lovely gardens. There are areas which need attention, a good clean up or paint up, but we appreciate this is a continuing on-going theme for such an old building of 124 rooms, with long corridors and old window frames and some rain / damp ingress in areas etc.
