Great base for travelling from south west to visit the Lakes.. approx 30 minute drive away in a beautiful little village.. it was nice to come back here away from the busy Lakes area.. the accommodation spotlessly clean and comfortable, great food and staff really friendly and welcoming, particularly with our dogs who settled well. Nice little circular 10 min walk for the dogs for a quick leg stretch and the churchyard was lit at night for them to be able to have relief before bed.
We found nothing not to like.. if you are not very active then the last flight of steep stairs to the bedroom may hinder you but was not a problem for us. The church bells ring on the quarter hour 24hours (and have done since the 1600’s) it didn’t bother us at all and ear plugs are provided if you need them.

The property looks a little tired from the outside but I received a warm welcome when I arrived with all staff being polite and friendly. My room was excellent and the bed very comfy. The shower was huge. All food was lovely and well cooked. I would personally recommend the porridge with breakfast, superb. Despite being very busy and I had forgotten to book a table for dinner, the staff fitted me in which I appreciated. I loved the notice about the church bells, by the way these did not keep me awake at all.
The en suite room could do with a curtain on the window, I know the property isn't overlooked but you can see the car park from the shower - so this works both ways.

The breakfast was very good and the staff very friendly and helpful. Dogs were very welcome everywhere. The food in the restaurant deserves a special mention, the specials menu had an excellent game stew and the most delicious Lancashire cheese and onion pie, both home made in the kitchen by a chef and a cut well above the microwaved mass produced rubbish served by so many pubs. Well done to all the staff for cooking and serving.
The stairs and corridors are a bit tatty and could do with a refresh.

The Wheatsheaf had a good atmosphere with excellent attentive staff and both the two evening meals and breakfasts we had over the weekend were excellent. The room was clean and tidy with a good sized ensuite and large shower.
There is a church opposite the Wheatsheaf which rings the bells until quite late at night and starts early in the morning, so if you are a light sleeper the hotel provides ear plugs. This might not suit everyone. It didn't bother us though as our window had secondary glazing which helped to muffle the sound enough so as not to interrupt our sleep.

A warm welcome when we arrived and were shown to our room. A lovely historic inn in a village setting next to a beautiful church. Our room was comfortable, with a large bathroom and great walk in shower. You are supplied with earplugs for the church chimes but despite being light sleepers we didn’t need them and the chimes were really faint and well muffled by the secondary glazing. We ate dinner in the inn and this was great. We had a fab breakfast in the morning. Very dog friendly.

A lovely pub with delicious food and very friendly and helpful staff. This is a good place to stay with a dog. The building is old and quirky so to reach the bedrooms requires climbing stairs and going along corridors and through swing doors. This would not be easy if your dog needed to get outside for a wee in the night. Otherwise great and we felt very welcome. The village is very pretty.

The Wheatsheaf is an authentic inn. It is a really good period building with complimentary design and decor inside and out. The pub serves decent food and drink. The staff were very good. The breakfast was excellent. The location is also great and the walk around the village, heron island, the mill, the church and to the fairy steps is a real treat.
The room is decorated and kitted out very well. Bathroom is great. The space is a little cramped (room 4).

My wife and I had a thoroughly enjoyable stay at the Wheatsheaf. Lucy, Callum, and the team really looked after us and went over and beyond. The food was excellent, and the drinks reasonably priced with a varied selection. Our room was pristine with an amazing modern bathroom. Our dog was fussed over and given plenty of treats. The area is beautiful with amazing walks. I have no hesitation in recommending the Wheatsheaf to others. We will definitely return.

Absolutely loved the Inn and it gives off a homely feel. All the staff were very friendly. We loved our princess bed. As a 5ft 3 woman, I definitely needed the mini steps to climb onto the bed. Getting out of bed was fantastic as you just slod down and your striaght into a standing position! The mattress is so compfy you easily fall asleep. Food is perfect and the drinks flowed. Breakfast was amazing with a good choice on the menu to choose. The walks around are good and we loved finding the Fairy Steps.
Nothing we didn't like, it was all good.

Can't fault this place. Warm welcome. Small but lovely room. Fantastic breakfast (items selected and ordered the evening before) Hot fresh breakfast again served with smiles and friendliness by staff. We weren't affected by the bells of the old local church (also worth a visit) but earplugs were provided just in case ...a lovely touch.
Long climb to our room but well worth it to stay at this lovely place!
