As comfy a hotel as I've stayed in for awhile. Professional, friendly staff. Small thoughtful touches. Yes, it is a tiny bit tatty, but hardly noticeable, excusable at this price and given the size and history of the place. Treat yourself and imagine being a Victorian industrialist for your stay.

The building is charming and set in some really lovely grounds. It has a warm and friendly ambience. All staff from reception to serving are lovely. Good sized, twin room with a bath and a shower. Good view of the grounds and a built in window seat. Really comfortable bed. Bedding and towels really clean and soft. The TV was also great - full working order with Freeview channels all tuned in. The Wi-Fi signal was strong in the room and throughout. Even with a full dining room, service was incredibly quick. Water and bread rolls were on the table. The portions were VERY generous. As you can then help yourself to tea or coffee you can choose to drink them in the dining room or take elsewhere. At just under £30 (Bread roll, water, starter, main, dessert, hot drink) it was really good value. A good choice at breakfast. Tea or coffee, juice, toast, fruit, yoghurt, cereals, croissant and cooked breakfast. Everything was fresh and delicious. Outside of the hotel, there is a lovely walk to the promenade which is so peaceful and tranquil.

I don't really want to pick any holes as we had such a lovely stay. It is a little tired in places and it's not ultra-sparkling clean but it's certainly not dirty either. Couldn't fault it otherwise.

Beautiful hotel. Room was upgraded free of charge. Comfortable bed and a nice size. Very happy this hotel hasn't been sullied by a constant air conditioning/ventilation rumble like many have these days. Location is good. Wonderfully quiet as it borders a nature reserve. Lovely balcony. Friendly staff.

It wasn't very clean. It looked like there had been cats or dogs in my room prior and the carpet was quite hairy. The old iron radiators were also dirty throughout - especially noticeable in the dining room where they're covered in dust and food debris.

A very good sized room, with all the usual comforts, which was kept warm throughout our November stay. The public areas were very good and welcoming, a good bar area and relaxing seating areas, and a very good restaurant area. The staff service was excellent throughout our stay, you cannot fault the service received and their friendliness. This was an excellent winter break for a few days relaxation in a good community, and within easy reach of the more famous areas of the Lake District National Park. We had good food throughout our stay for both breakfast and our evening meals. We would recommend this hotel to family and friends.

We were aware before booking that there were reports of the building looking tired in places and requiring some updates. This is true, but the building is very old and majestic, a wonderful old building in lovely gardens. There are areas which need attention, a good clean up or paint up, but we appreciate this is a continuing on-going theme for such an old building of 124 rooms, with long corridors and old window frames and some rain / damp ingress in areas etc.

What a wonderful find! This hotel is full of character & the perfect location for a relaxing break or exploring the many woodland & costal walks around the area. Our room was perfect for ourselves & our husky - large room, substantial bathroom. The eating ears were exceptional - we were able to drink & eat in the bar area with our dog, together with other canine companions - lots of space for all. The main restaurant area has breathtaking views across Morecombe Bay with exceptiopnal choices for both breakfast & dinner. All members of staff were so friendly & helpful - couldn't do enough for us. We will certainly be visiting again. Thank you to all.

The whole ambience was very friendly and cosy. We booked last minute to go to Cartmel races and didn’t realise the taxi service is almost non existent unless booked way in advance. We had a twin room and found the single beds really small and we are not big people. But I left my small bed light behind and the hotel very kindly posted it back to me.

Only that we were given a list of taxi numbers which was pretty pointless although it was explained if you go to races you need to book in advance. And apparently only one taxi service has the account for the races anyway! And the single beds were small

Fantastic Victorian period venue. Looking a little tired if you have a keen eye but this building exudes enough charm to overlook this. The maintenance team must work really hard to keep this building from deteriorating.

The curtain in the restraint are bare near the bow windows letting down a stunning room. The curtains in the ballroom is having off the rail and doesn’t shut ( very cold draught ) The drain in the basin to our room was very slow to clear. I adjusted the plug to increase the flow to good effect ( room 227. ) Lacking investment.

Lovely breakfast selection with plenty of choice and good service, nice size room including large bathroom, and reception staff very welcoming. We stayed one night and it was a good stop over. I'd stay again.

Went to plug phone charger in behind bedside cabinet and it was very dusty with cobwebs. Obviously not cleaned in a while. Otherwise the room was very well kept and had everything you could possibly need. Bed was a bit hard but that's personal taste.

Beautiful grounds, beautiful, historical building inside and outside, comfortable, good size rooms, heating was working most of the time so the room was warm, friendly staff, great location overlooking the beach, comfy bed, good shower, good breakfast, the hotel itself is very interesting to walk around, with lots of old decor and historical objects. Great value for money

Apart from the missing ham and cheese during breakfast, I can't think of anything. The hotel is kind of rustic, but clean and comfortable

From the moment we checked in, the staff were incredibly accommodating. They offered assistance with navigating the hotel and made sure that every area was easily accessible. Their genuine kindness and willingness to help made a significant difference to our experience.

There was one aspect that left us less satisfied. We struggled to cut the beef during our evening meal due to inadequate cutlery. This issue made the dining experience less enjoyable, and our food got cold as a result. Improving the quality of the cutlery would significantly enhance the dining experience.
