Excellent food throughout, extremely helpful manager and friendly staff. Lovely village location. Room itself, and bed in particular, comfortable, with the caveat of the comments made below.

It was not clear, certainly not on booking.com, that the room did not have a shower, only a stand-alone rolltop bath located within the room, with a small loo and basin separately. Just saying it has a bath doesn't necessarily mean it doesn't have a shower. When we mentioned this, the manager bent over backwards to find a way of us being able to shower, even though the hotel was full. There are rooms with full, modern ensuite facilities so if that's what you want make sure to book the right room. The wi-fi is very weak and at times drops out. While this is not the fault of the hotel, which has 5 routers, I think it should be made clear both on booking.com and the hotel website. Perhaps satellite broadband would be an option for the hotel to consider.

Lovely setting, very tranquil, pretty garden area, stunning views, great walks from your doorstep, welcoming staff, not too large a Hotel, nice rooms, bar and dining room also very nice. Special thank you to all the staff who looked after us especially Charlie who served us at dinner - he was excellent. Sunday dinner was fabulous and breakfast also delicious We would stay again and recommend.

A set price menu option for lunch or dinner - it's not cheap and the food is good but I would have dined every night had it been better value for money. Shower wasn't great in our room - scalding or cold and not powerful. Garden furniture could be stained / tidied up a bit - some areas are just a little tired. None of this impacted the overall enjoyment of our stay.

The hotel is in a stunning location and the building is both historic and beautiful. Good coffee with breakfast and salmon with scrambled eggs was both generous and tasty.

The hotel changed ownership a few years ago, we have stayed here several times. Whilst still pretty good overall the standards are not quite what they were. Dinner was pretty disappointing where it was previously excellent, the menu and ingredients were fine but quality of cooking below par. Small things like bread with breakfast being pre-sliced bread not home baked fresh bread/rolls as was once the case. Overall experience just not quite as special/not the same attention to detail. Could be great with a few small tweaks and maybe a stronger team in the kitchen.

The Sunday roast here was one of the best we've ever had. The breakfast offered a really nice variety of items so you weren't eating the same thing every day. The common spaces for guests; living room, outdoor seating areas, etc. were cozy and well maintained. There is minimal to do in Elterwater as far as shops, places to eat, etc. We chose this hotel for this reason, to feel more secluded, but if you want to be close to more action, get something nearer to Ambleside. We were able to start a beautiful walk/hike around the area right from our hotel which was so nice.

There are peacocks on the property which is a fun feature, but they liked to hang around our cottage so our stairway, railing and window ledge were always covered in poop. Our room was cleaned daily but they weren't removing the cobwebs on the ceiling, we arrived to no toiletries and only some of the towels would get replaced. The cottage was small, specifically the bathroom which had an extremely tiny sink. As we were out hiking all day, it was a bit hard to maneuver all our gear around a small space. All in all, we had a good stay, but felt this place was overpriced for what it offered.

The hotel is beautifully situated overlooking Elterwater. The staff all top class and looked after us really well. The ensuite bedroom was a good size and we had 3 nights excellent sleep. The room was comfortably furnished with plenty of storage space. The meals were of a high standard and much enjoyed. The restaurant was spacious and the lounges around the hotel much appreciated. The garden was a good size and patrolled by numerous Peacocks! A thoroughly enjoyable stay.

Very difficult to turn on the shower & the 'green' toiletries from China were a first!

This is a beautiful old hotel with character in a wonderful location. The bedrooms and all other rooms are lovely and full of understated elegant charm. The food was OK in the evening (not brilliant but fine) and the breakfast was delicious albeit a little stingy ...e.g. on the menu it said "mushrooms", but we only got half a large mushroom each!! The views are wonderful and the garden is nice although it needs some work to make it feel loved. There were a few downsides to our stay. I hate criticizing but hopefully the management will read this and take it as constructive criticism! Firstly the young man that met us on arrival wasn't friendly. It felt as if he really didn't want to work there! However other staff were nice.We did hear a loud knock on the door one morning of one of the annexe buildings and a man shouting "You're late bro!"...not very professional!! Secondly our room was cold and the duvet was really thin. We were told we could have an electric heater but then told that there weren't any left ...but we were given an extra duvet which was fine. We could tell the radiator needed bleeding, which is a simple job but none of the staff had the tools or skills to do this. Our room was small but nice, but there was mould in the otherwise beautiful bathroom. Lastly, the WiFi was broken, but we knew it had been down for days due to a power cut. We asked if it might be fixed during our stay but were met with a non-committal don't know! Lastly, both mornings of our stay there was loud hoovering outside the breakfast room...surely this could wait. I can see from other reviews that this bothered other people too! We loved the peacocks! Despite the issues above, we'll be back!

Lovely small country house feel - beautifully furnished, perfect for relaxing with lovely staff

Our room only had an exposed bath in the room and no shower - It looked good but didn't suit us. The small bathroom could do with a shelf or two for washbags and there were no areas with good enough lighting or mirrors to do contact lenses /makeup. The evening dinner menu was limited as some parts of dishes were pre-prepared/brought in. For some reason even though the were hardly any sittings for dinner available, we were almost totally on our own in the dining room - this was OK but just felt strange. Staff were lovely though.

Loved everything about the place. It was decorated in a way that managed to combine traditional country home with odd quirky pieces, into a warm, welcoming and non pretentious environment. We stayed in both the Classic (Neddy Bogle) and Super Luxury rooms (Lingmoor), each well appointed for its price level, and both really comfortable with lovely views over Eltermere. The included breakfasts were great, offering a wide selection of fresh pastries, cereals, bread and preserves, and cooked items. The cooked breakfasts were perfectly cooked and really tasty (beautifully poached eggs in particular). We ate our evening meals there and again we felt the meals were exceptional, very well presented and delicious. The menu isn't vast, but I'm a fussy eater and I had no issues at all. I overheard other diners offering their compliments to the chefs, so we were not alone in our appreciation. Every member of staff we had contact with were fantastic, friendly, cheerful and attentive. I must make special mention of Evie, who was so lovely. She never seemed to stop working, but would immediately give you her full attention if anything was needed, we felt she went the extra mile and is a credit to the establishment.

Neddy bogle was showing its age a little in places, and some of the exterior painting needed refreshing, but none of this would put me off staying again nor recommending.

A lovely hotel over looking Elterwater. Very friendly staff. A cosy bar with a wood burner. Delicious dinner and great breakfasts. My only minor complaint was that as we had our dog with us, we were in one of the annex rooms. And no one had thought to put the heating on before we arrived. Tricky control panel on radiator so impossible to work out. Room very small. Could really do with a mirror on the bedroom to dry hair. Otherwise it’s a really lovely hotel.

Mirror in bedroom near plug to blow dry hair. Tricky radiator to work out. Very small shower room.

The hotel is in a lovely, peaceful location and the staff were very friendly. There is a nice bar, good food menu and very nice breakfast. They also offer 10% discount voucher for the local cafe, Slates. The village has a regular bus, so you can park up and not have to negotiate the narrow local roads when you go exploring/walking. There are obviously local walks along the river and around the lake too. There is a nice pub 5 mins from the hotel, Britannia Inn, which was popular and did good food. We would like to make a special mention to Talullah & Ruby, who were lovely and very helpful during our stay.

Our main gripe was the evening we booked to eat at the hotel and asked for and booked a table in the bar, as it had more atmosphere, more people and piped music. When we came back from a long day's walking, we were told we had been bumped to the restaurant as somebody with a DOG had booked for a meal and they weren't allowed in the restaurant! The restaurant was totally empty and had no atmosphere. Also, during the stay, we did not get our rooms replenished on a couple of occasions (toilet paper, shower products, and once, no tea/coffee/water) and even when we asked for the room to be hoovered, after we had a small accident, and passed that on to the manager (?) it was not done. Very disappointing for the price we had paid to stay and it being 4 Star.
