I arrived half an hour early before check in, however the staff were able to check if my room was ready and they let me check in early. (Not that that would have been an issue but it was a lovely gesture) Room was clean and cosy, with a beautiful view. I also liked the fact that the room key was an actual "key" and not one of those electronic cards as they can be problematic. The hotel has a cabinet of helpful leaflets of local attractions and a folder of local walks which was great. The full English breakfast was delicious, a great start to the day before a big walk. Car parking was easy and there were plenty of spaces. I had dinner in the bar on my last evening and it was lovely. Even though signal for mobiles is limited the hotel's WIFI is excellent. Overall a thoroughly enjoyable peaceful stay, as a solo traveller, it is nice to stay in a hotel that is welcoming and accommodating. I read previous reviews for this hotel, and one of the most common "gripes" other visitors had was the lack of tv signal... perhaps this is just my personal opinion, but when I'm away for a peaceful break I wouldn't expect to be using a tv. It's nice to be cut off for a bit.

From the minute I walked into this hotel I could feel the warmth of the staff. Joe and Ness have hospitality off to a fine art. Nothing was too much trouble to sort and their whole ethos is the customer comes first. The breakfast was a great to start to a days trekking and very varied. The evening meals were superb. I really cannot praise this hotel enough and recommend it to any and everyone. The additional back up staff of Katy G and Gav make up a very strong and energetic team that is managed superbly by BOB the manager and I for one will be returning soon. Thanks guys for a wonderful stay. x

absolutely nothing.

All staff very hard-working, friendly, eager to provide good service & very cheerful despite obviously being under some pressure due to staffing levels vs number of customers Good room, spacious & quiet, nice view, large & very comfortable bed Wide range of food in restaurant/bar for evening meal, food very well prepared & presented, good quality and also good choice of cooked options for breakfast Car parking

Noisy water system in bathroom More options for continental style breakfast would be welcome A bit of a long wait between ordering evening meal & receiving food due to busy service/staffing

The location it’s excellent and perfect for accessing a number of fabulous walks. The staff are all super helpful and friendly. The hotel has a lovely cozy ambiance. The food is very tasty and generous portions are provided with some healthy and vegetarian options available. We just loved our stay. It is also very dog friendly if you have a dog. The bed was very comfortable and the room seemed eco-friendly avoiding single use materials where possible.

Only small suggestion is that the dog poo bin could be emptied more often

Comfortable traditional hotel in a lovely setting with good facilities, nice atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff, spotlessly clean and a great cooked breakfast. Perfectly situated for some great scenic walks in the Elterwater and Little Langdale area such as the Skelwith and Colwith Force waterfalls walk.

The shower in the en-suite bathroom in the room we had could do with an upgrade but it is an older traditional hotel with great character so probably in keeping with the general character of the hotel where you can't expect everything to be super modern.

If you want to stay in a Lakeland pub this is a great example. The location is beautiful. It is close to Ambleside but peaceful. It is next to woods and the river. There are many walks directly from here (leave the car!) of all lengths and grades - eg Fairfield Horseshoe plus one hour each way on a great track over to Ambleside, or you can just amble to Elterwater or as far as you like on the Cumbria Way. The hotel is cosy. The food is good. The staff are friendly. What’s not to love?

Nothing - I stay here all the time as it is just the way I like it!

Never being an adventurous diner I elected for the usual steak pie which is the only meal I ever order. This one was on another level. Bravo chef.

Curious that the bar tender suggested he set up a tab for my meals/drinks which I duly agreed with only to hear a knock on my room in the evening asking how I wanted to pay for my burger (no mention of the drinks). When I advised he had set up a tab he said he didn't know what room I was in. Yet here he was at room no 8 ?

Lovely traditional lakes building with a great little bar/restaurant attached, all VERY dog friendly. Perfect base for a walking holiday, with a couple of easy scenic walks starting nearby, and a drying room for dealing with wet clothes. Rooms and facilities were clean and fresh, felt like things were being kept up to date.

Rooms a little small, not that you want to spend long in your room when you’ve got the Lake District outside your door.

1. Staff were terrific -- Gavril was a star -- Cumbria Tourist Board should come and pin a medal on all of them 2. I saw a couple of so-so reviews of the food online, but I think they cannot be recent -- the food was excellent both nights we ate there -- Saturday night duck supper was spot on, on a busy night -- perfectly cooked, nice portion size ie. not too big, well-judged balanced dish in all respects

Pretty much everything! The room was clean, comfortable, warm and had everything we needed, plus a pretty view. There was a decent shower and a good quality hospitality tray. Dinner was really nice, my only slight comment would be that the choice was a bit limited for non meat eaters, all the specials were meat, and I don't like spicy food. However they kindly doubled up the fishcake starter for my main, and that and my son's duck special were amazing, also the puddings were excellent. Breakfast was also excellent, a good choice of juices, cereals, fruit and yogurt on the side and a range of cooked items. Our hot croissants, my poached egg on toast and my son's partial English were faultless. All served by friendly and helpful staff at a very reasonable price, with parking on site. I hope to return with my husband before too long.

Just the odd minor thing as above. Plus my bed was a little soft for me, but my son said his was perfect and he had the best sleep he's ever had in a hotel.
